Title: Windows 10
Post by: mgeneas on Thursday 12 May 16 17:48 BST (UK)
How are those of you with windows 10 liking it?
The last 2 nights when I am in bed it installed itself on my computer. I have never said that I wanted it. I am happy with Windows 8.1.
Both mornings it has taken 20 minutes to get back to 8.1.

How can I stop this happening? Or will I have to eventually give in?

My son upgraded all our pc's to Windows 10, must say I was a bit apprehensive as I don't like change and was used to the Windows 8 that we had.  But must say I really like it.  It is more user friendly, for me anyway, not being really savvy with these things.   Have no complaints.  ;D ;D

It installed itself on my laptop a couple of months ago, I have left it because I am just as happy with Windows 10 as I was with Window 8.1 Although I still miss XP.

I am no techie, but I think you have to untick automatic updates to stop Windows 10 installing automatically.

I still have 8.1 on my desktop and keep getting asked if I want to upgrade but have no intention of changing.   I have windows 10 on my laptop so know what it is like and prefer to stay as I am  ::)

Apparently the 'free offer' to download ends soon  ::)

Offer ends 29th July 2016, then whatever Microsoft decides to charge.

I had to in the end, I was still on windows 7 and in the end after 3 days of trying to do updates, I gave up and went to windows 10.  I read somewhere it was a conscious effort on the part of Microsoft to make updates impossible for users of windows 7 so there was no choice but to upgrade.  I am sure that's not true really.   :o :o

It wouldn't surprise me if MS were trying to persuade people to upgrade by causing issues with Windows Update.  There definitely have been more issues get the updates to install recently.  I've already had to fix WU on my mother's 9.5 year old laptop once this year and two months later its stopped checking for updates again so looks like I shall be working on it again. :-\  I've had to give my own one which is only 3 years old a "kicking" a couple of times to get WU working properly but so far they've not beaten me. ;)

Not exactly whatever they decide to charge.  It is possible to buy Windows 10 anyway now from various sources at various prices, and I would imagine they will release upgrades after the tend of the free period.  OK you have to pay but I suspect many PCs that don't get upgraded will probably "expire" before Win7 or 8 are out of MS support anyway.  Only issues going forward will be some other software will stop working on older versions of windows, but there are ways around it.

Its not the end of the world if you don't update and it wouldn't surprise me if my parent's refuse to upgrade their two desktops anyway.  It was bad enough getting them to use Win7 after XP, don't fancy trying to get them using Win10 particularly. :-X  My mother's laptop won't take Win10 anyway as the bios isn't compatible because of its age.

Does anyone use PAF (Personal Ancestral File) on Windows 10.

I do have Ancestral Quest but much prefer PAF for entering new information.

even Linux are impressed with W10...

It is quite intriguing how Windows 10 took off shortly after its announcement on the 29 of July 2015 and it is without a doubt that it’s the best Windows ever...

I'd check if the maker of your computer has any updates relating to Windows 10.
After spending another morning trying to fix stuff I discovered Toshiba had updates to help with Windows 10 problems of course the Toshiba Service Station which installs the updates was one of the things that wouldn't work...I uninstalled that and installed the latest version which worked, now all seems to be fine, fingers cross.

I also have Paf on W8.1 but have not got it on my laptop W10 as I need to download the programme  ::)  There must be someone on here that still has it and has upgraded.  I think I may have the programme somewhere, if so I will try downloading it tomorrow onto my laptop  ;)

Dinner time  ;D

As I have said on a previous post, Windows 10 will attempt to install and subsequently update behind your back!
And will give feedback to Microsoft to suggest ways to assist you to enjoy Windows 10. :o
There are various programs that are supposed to prevent Windows 10 from installing, not tried any.

At the risk of repeating myself the following updates should be hidden as they 'influence' the downloading of Windows 10.  Obviously change from automatic download of MS updates.  The main one to hide is KB3035583, this has been issued in various sizes about 4 times.  Also KB 2952664, 3021917, 3022345, 3068708, 3075249 and 3080149.  I also use GWX software which goes a long way to help is barring these updates.  So far I have managed to avoid Windows 10!

Disable automatic updates, and when you manually check, make sure you click in the optional or recommended tab and untick 'Upgrade to Windows 10'.

Hallelujah,
Sorted..........................found on Microsoft website how to revert to Windows 8.1.

Go to "Settings"
then
"Recovery"
then
"Go back to Windows 8.1"

I will stay with 8.1 for the time being.

Post 29 July - Microsoft have announced that they will cease 'pestering' people to download Windows 10 as it will cost £99 from then on.  However, it will not happen overnight as the effect is worldwide, so probably take quite a few weeks.

No you can only revert back to an older version within a month of upgrading, not that it only lasts for a month.

Disable automatic updates, and when you manually check, make sure you click in the optional or recommended tab and untick 'Upgrade to Windows 10'.

I've disabled auto updates, could not see Upgrade to W 10 but haven't had another 'happy message' since.  The last one gave me a date 'to do' option...24th May at 1.00  so we'll see what happens then :-\

Just my opinion for what it's worth: the only good reason I would have for not upgrading to Windows 10 is if the device is old and drivers are not available, which seems to be the problem with some old laptops in particular, or there is insufficient memory or drive space.

If you spend some time after upgrading, disabling most of the extra 'features', Windows 10 is hardly any different from 7. There is plenty of help available online for doing this and Win10 seems far more easily customisable than its predecessors. Most of the so-called features are trying to compete with Android and regain the ground Microsoft lost to Google in the mobile market.

Any modern operating system will try to harvest data from you, but you can minimise this by altering various settings. Admittedly you may find settings revert to the defaults after a major update but I've ony found that once since I upgraded last year.

Mike.

That's ok if you are computer savvy, many of us are not.  I know we should be but there are lots of us out here who can turn the thing on and off and drive it but not much more.  Bit like a car :D  I can drive one but don't know how it works ???

And what's the point of disabling everything - I'll take to 10 when I either want or have to not because Microsoft are forcing it on me, grrrr

A good reason for not upgrading is : "If it ain't bust, don't fix it!"

I have to agree with mike175, Win10 is worth having. People don't like change, I understand that. I just hope all the people turning off their updates, know they could miss out on some really important ones, especially security definitions. With the various Cryptolockers now being 70% of all malware downloaded, you would not like to lose all that hard work you have done. Keeping up to date is one of the best ways of protecting yourselves.

You can still download the important updates without Windows 10.

The bally thing is taking me over, despite un checking the update box, asking it to delay, it is still trying to download.  Roll on the freebie cut off date I say  >:(

I have to agree with mike175 ...

I knew there must be someone  ;D

Seriously, the bits you need to turn off are just the nonsense they add in for the kids' benefit. The core operating system is possibly the best Windows yet. You really need to keep up to date to try to keep ahead of the hackers.

But I also dislike the Microsoft way of forcing the upgrade on everyone  >:(

Mike.

P.S. If you really don't want 10, there is a utility you can download called "Never 10" which takes care of things for you and prevents the upgrade.
