Hi,
Can any one help, trying to find a photo or sketch of St. Davids Hall, formerly the Catholic Church which was on the corner of Bute Terrace and David Street built i believe in 1842 anddemolished in the 1970's and replaced by St Davids RC Cathedral in Charls Street.
Thanks for any help.

Can't help with a photo of the original church, but the current St David's church in Charles Street (became St David's Cathedral in 1920) was opened in 1887. The Cathedral was partially destroyed during WW2 but re-built and re-opened in 1959.

Just a thought .. St David's Hall is nowhere near David Street / Bute Terrace ???
The earlier post mentioned by Cas (stallc) says it was where the Cardiff International Arena (or Motorpoint Arena) is now.

Not sure if this link might help some info. on RC Church in Cardiff, scroll down to Roman Catholic

I think that if you can get sight of 25 inch Ordnance Survey Maps-- Glamorgan XLIII.15 you may be able to pin-point the chapel as the survey was done in 1876. I haven't managed to do that yet. Toby.

I do now have 2 pictures of the old church, one of the church itself and one showing Stanley Street, the narrow lane where the church stood on the corner. Not sure how big they are - on my phone - but don’t seem able to post them 🤔

Deirdre784. We are keeping our fingers crossed. Good luck. T

Here’s the church (you can make out the Stanley St street sign).....
-
Wow. Well done. That is sufficient incentive to get hold of 25 inch map.
By the way, how did you find it?
T

At the local studies library in Cardiff. Sadly the other photo is too big and I can’t make it any smaller.
-
It came out fine. Sorry to persist with the questions, but how exactly was it catalogued and was there writing on the back etc?
Very exciting for me, as this could be where my great grand parents married in 1859. T.
-
Do you know they married at St David’s - i have a listing if that would help? But yes, as I understand it, this was the original church built when a few rooms in David St became too small for the congregation.
-
Yes. I have a copy of the ceremony certificate. Thanks for your offer.
I picked up somewhere, but cannot now find out where, that it was built to cope with the big Irish influx to Cardiff following the potato famine. Lots of them were employed building the nearby docks. T

A small extract of a map....
-
I just asked in the local studies section if they had any photos of the church and they found two. Obviously not photos sadly of the time you are really looking for but the best i’ve found.
-
This gets better & better. Is this from the 25 inch map that I am seeking?
What is the road's name at the bottom of the map?
Thanks, T
-
That’s Bute Terrace. Sorry it’s an image i found, don’t know from when or size.
I’ve just remembered that i found a copy of a booklet on St David’s Cathedral and it gives a bit of history. Here’s what looks like the same picture and details of opening and cost.
Sorry, not having much luck with photos, but it opened in 1842 and cost a total of £2,124 17s 8d inc architects fees and purchase of the site!

I shall have to find a way to get down to the Cardiff Local history Unit. I need to do this anyway for there is probably more to be found on Adam Street and there are also gravestones to be discovered & photographed in Newport, Mon & Aberdare.
Thank you very much Deirdre for that quantum jump in my F.H.
Toby.

No problem Toby, pleased to help.
You could try emailing the library and see what they say, maybe they could scan a copy for you?

I got there very recently and found the staff in the library very helpful. They had also an old view of Adam Street in winter. There were also lots of books of local interest.
Incidentally, for anyone planning to visit, the local history library in not the central libray but one on the south side of Cathays Cemetery (closed Friday & Sunday). 8 or 9 bus from the centre. T

The staff are very helpful, but the move to Cathays was a nuisance. I regularly went to the local studies unit when it was in the central library but it’s difficult to park at Cathays (they have much improved computers with newspaper readers though).
