Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone out there is doing research on families in the parish of Castleton. I have been researching a number of branches of my family there (mostly Elliots) but have hit a few brickwalls. If anyone else is having the same problems, I would be glad to help and share info that I have - 2 heads (or more) have got to be better than 1 :)
Cheers,
Clare

I visited both Cemeteries at Castleton last month; there were many Elliots and Croziers buried there. I would recommend a visit there.
-
Hi there,
I have been down a couple of times and have a copy of the Liddesdale monumental inscriptions that have helped a lot. However, I have hit a brick wall with one of my Elliots as he was illegitimate and tracking down his father is proving to be a problem! :)
Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare
Have you tried looking on the Rootsweb mailing list for Roxburgh. I know John Murray has been compiling a huge database of info on Castleton families and Elliots in particular - he may have info that could help you with your brickwalls.
-
Hi there,
John and I have email 'chatted' a few times about my family, but we haven't been able to go further back on my line than I am just now. I am hoping that his work on Elliot burials will help, but haven't had a chance to speak to him about that for a while.
I notice that you have Elliots in your signature - which branch are you researching?
Cheers,
Clare

Hi again Clare
My only Elliot so far is my 4xgreat grandmother Janet, b 1750 in Cavers,d 1830 and buried in Castleton. Janet was apparently the daughter of a William Elliot - she married James Riddell, who I believe was also from the Cavers area. Other than that info, I haven't really started on that arm of the tree yet - too many ancestors, too little time ;D
Regards
Pam

Hi Pam,
You have got back much further than I have! I am stuck around the start of the 19th century with William Elliot born in 1810. I really need to get back into New Register House and have a serious look at the OPRs.
I have the 1851 census for Castleton and Hawick and the Liddesdale Monumental Inscriptions if you ever need a look up of those.
Cheers,
Clare

In my family I have Donald Forsyth (born 3 Feb 1826 - Avoch) who married (Janet Elliot (20 May 1838 - Castleton). They married 16 Jan 1856.
I believe her parents were Gideon Elliot and Agnes Aderson and further informaation would be great.

Hi Sue,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I have done some digging and found the following...
In Castleton Churchyard, there is a stone with the following inscription:
"In memory of Donald Forsyth who dies at Bridge End Newcastleton 1902 aged 70 years. Also Janet Elliot wife of the above who dies at Newcastleton January 25th 1922 aged 84 years"
That would give you some more leeway on Donald's date of birth - circa 1832. I am also interested in how someone born in Avoch ended up in Castleton - it is a long way to travel.
I also checked the 1851 census and did not find any mention of a Gideon Elliot in either Castleton or Hawick. I did find one Janet Elliot aged 12 in the 1851 census for Castleton, but not sure if it is the correct one, as no parents are listed...
Dykecrofts
Helen Elliot, Daughter, Unmarried, 22, Farm Servant, Roxburgh Castleton
Mary Elliot, daughter, Unmarried, 20, Farm Servant, Roxburgh Castleton
janet Elliot, Daughter, Unmarried, 12, Farm Servant, Roxburgh Castleton
Robert Turnbull, Grandson, 12, Roxburgh Castleton
Agness Anderson, Granddaughter, 1, Roxburgh Castleton.
Unfortunately, there is no head of household given - so we are kind of drawing a blank there.
However, I did a quick search on the IGI at familysearch.org, and there are births of a Helen Elliot and Mary Elliot to Gideon Elliot and Agnes (or Nancy) Anderson at around the correct times - so it might be the correct family.
Sorry it is not better information - but it might help you on a little bit.
Cheers,
Clare

Hi Sue, got this from my copy of the 1841 Castleton census, living at Bellshiels. Gideon Elliot aged 48, ag lab, Agnes Anderson aged 46, Mary Elliot aged 11, Agnus Elliot aged 8, Ann Elliot aged 5, Jennet Elliot aged 2, Jane Grieve aged 80, widow and pauper and Robert Turnbull aged 2.
Hope this helps
-
Hi again, have been on the IGI and found some baptisms for you, firstly a submitted record of a Gideon Elliot baptised 1793 of Brighouse, Castleton. I have also found 2 Jane Grieve's, the first one was baptised 15 Nov 1761 in Hawick, parents William Grieve and Jane Ruecastle, this Jane had siblings:- Walter, baptised 23 Dec 1763 in Hawick, John Grieve baptised 4 Nov 1766 in Hawick, another Walter baptised 22 Jun 1770 in Hawick and Ann Grieve baptised 1 Oct 1772 in Hawick. The second Jane, baptised 1762, is another submitted record and this Jane's parents were Walter Grieve and Kathrine Ogilvie.
Hope this helps
-
Hi, also a Jane Grieve and Robert Anderson married 15 Nov 1789, Cavers. Couldn't find a suitable baptism for Agnes on the IGI though, sorry.
-
Thank you so much Clare and Kena.
The MI is definately my family - How Donald got to Castleton I have no idea.
I've got a copy of Donald and Janets death certificates from Scotland People and he was born in Avoch.
Once again many thanks,
Sue
-
Hi Clare,
I know you are researching Elliots in Castleton and I was wondering if this was one of yours?
Helen Elliot born aug 1741
Father Frances, Mother Isabel Murray.
The reason for asking is I have a Helen Elliot born c1841 who married Walter Amos 4/12/1768 Hobkirk Just over the hill from Castleton. I would like to know who her parents were. when I checked IGI this was the only one I came up with for that date.
Thanks Lesley.
-
Hi there,
She isn't one of mine yet :) but I do keep finding more and more! However, I am not that far back in my research yet - I am stuck at around 1810 at the moment.
You might have issues finding out Helen's parent's though, if she was born in Castleton, as the Castleton OPRs only go back to 1749 (see topic http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,110740.0.html)
I will keep digging though and see what I can find in my travels ;D
Cheers,
Clare

It looks like we have some connection, although it looks like this family may be quite complex. Any info to share would be appreciated.
My gg grandfather was Robert Anderson Turnbull born Castleton about 1839. I have his marriage certificate to Margaret Gunn Polson (Born 1850 Latheron Caithness) marriage 12 Jan 1875 Hawick
Marriage certificate shows his mother as Elisabeth Young nee Elliot born Castleton 1821 (no fathers information on marriage certificate)
Elisabeth married Robert Young 19 Apr 1852 Oxnam.
So far I have been unable to trace a birth certificate for Robert but his marriage certificate states his name as Robert Anderson Turnbull or Elliot
1841 census shows Robert living with grandparents Gideon Elliot and Agnes Anderson
1851 shows Robert (shown as Grandson)
living with Isabella Lillico
Margaret Anderson 1775 born Castleton
Helen Elliot 1829 born Castleton
Cheers,
Lynn

Hi
I am looking for information on the family thomson from the parish of Castelton. they emmigrated from castelton around 1830-32 I have letters from the parish elders stating they are of productive and moral charactor The Thomson's that I speak of settled in the northeasthope township of the county of perth in the province of Ontario. the earliest physical evidence I can define is that of an Adam Thomson born about 1768 presumably born in Castelton Parish they were stone masons and farmers i have a few documents from before the move and a multitude after the fact .I have lists of births and deaths from a # of people and families whom had settled in the lower canada tract nobody particular to me but that I recall the names from my youth It would seem that Elizabeth Thomson was knowledgable and familiar with a great many people of that time.I will try to input some of this material if somebody could suggest where they would like to see it.I am far from cumputer savey and these documents are extremely delicate.
Take care and hope to hear from you soon

Hello, does anyone have any info on John Blacklock Elliot, son of Robert Elliot of Powisholm Castleton and Esther Elliot, b 1829? There are some suggestions on the web that he died in 1848 but I can't find any sources to confirm that. Robert died in 1865 and his will does not include his son John so he may well have died young but just maybe he was still alive but had been "disowned" because his parents did not approve of his marriage. His brother Robert was certainly involved in the temperance movement so maybe the family were pretty straight laced?
Otherwise if he did die in 1848 does anyone have any info on other candidates to be the John E who married Mary Jane Scott at Gretna (an irregular marriage) in Dec 1858? She had an illegitimate son in Feb 1857 who may or may not have been John's and they had several other children after their marriage. John's death cert in 1915 gives only his father's name (Robert). John and Mary Jane had at least 8 children but no Robert though all the other expected names are there - maybe another indication of a family falling-out.
Thanks a lot of for any help anyone can give!

Has anyone come across the surname Welsh while fossicking through the Castleton records? A Thomas Welsh and Isoble Grieve had a son called John in Castleton in 1759. I think this is the same Thomas Welsh who later married Agnes Hall, who bore him Agnes(1764), Gilbert(1765), Beatrix(1768) and Thomas(1775), in the same parish. Needless to say, there is no record of either of Thomas Welsh's marriages.
The children of Thomas Welsh and Agnes Hall were all born at Bilhopefoot, which is in a remote part of Castleton parish near Hermitage Castle. I believe that the above Thomas Welsh born in 1775 is my notorious 4 x great-grandfather of that name who served in the Hopetoun Fencibles then became a coachman in Wilton, Hawick. I know he was about 34 in July 1808 when Wanted notices about him were published in the Kelso Mail and Edinburgh Evening Courant, and from the same notices I know that he was "stout-built" and had "reddish-brown" hair, so that accounts for two features of my appearance. However, I haven't yet had the procurator-fiscal's office in Hawick taking an interest in my whereabouts!

I am seeking information relating to ancestors and descendants of the above.

2. Henry b. 1762
3. John b. 1766

Pat,
Gravestone Ettleton Cemetery. Here lyes the Body of William Anderson who died at Redmoss Feb. 16th 1781 aged 59 years also Jane Graham his spouse who died at Castleton Sep. 19th 1814 aged 83 years also two of his daughters Peggy and Jean who died in infancy.
Reverse. Here lies the body of Grizzal Graham who died at Millsteads April 10th 1779 aged 39 years.
There was no rigid prescribed spelling in the 1700s. In my family the name was always Andison. Their son Henry Andison born 1762 is my 3 x gt. grandfather his daughter Jean/Jane born 1805 married Gilbert Telfer.
I have her brother Robert Andison born 1793 in 1861 census as a widower aged 68 living in Newcastleton but knew nothing else about him.
I have other information about the Andison/Anderson Castleton families and would be delighted to correspond with you.
Regards, Morag Carter

Hi Morag,
Thanks so much for your information on the Andison's. William and Jane Andison are my 4x great grandparents. Your ancestor, Henry is the brother to my ancestor Robert, both sons of William and Jane. I was thrilled to receive the Gravestone inscription. Do you know if there is a picture of their tombstone anywhere? I found a picture of the graveyard on 'google images'.
Andison has always been the surname in our family too. I have researched the origin of the name and they state it is a derivative of 'Anderson', however, my Andison aunt seemed to think it was of Danish origin. Do you know anything about the origins of the surname?
I also found your last name interesting as "Carter" is also in our famly through Henry Andison's (b. 1878) wife's family. However, this name comes from Suffolk and I imagine there were alot of Carter's in the UK :)
My email address is * I would love to correspond too Morag. Interestingly, you have Robert Andison in your 1861 census, as his wife died in Cumberland in 1855 and I could not find him in the Census of England for this year. He did go back to Cumberland and life with his daughter Mary and husband John Young who was a farmer.
Will chat more by email.
Warmest Regards, Pat

I think my only crozier-elliot connection is Christian Scott Crozier who married John Elliot, a ploughman from Castleton, on 27th March 1846 at Ettrick.
Don't have too much information on John's parents though as my connection is on the Crozier side.

I am trying to trace the parents of John Turnbull who married Margaret Murray on 13 Apr 1806 in Hawick. The naming of their children- John (b 1 Apr 1807),; Jane (b. 1807) and Helen would indicate that John's parents may well be John Turnbull and Helen Elliot. An entry in family search tree gives John Turnbull a birth circa 1749 in Piper Burn, Castleton. Does anyone have information on this John Turnbull or the Turnbulls of Piper Burn?
I found a record of a Helen Elliot bapt. 20 Apr 1755 to Robert Elliot and Margaret Turnbull who seemed to have married 22 Jun 1739 in Ancrum. Does anyone have more info on these Elliots?
Thank you.
