I am looking for information on each or either of these two men and also James Buxton's 2 daughters with Eleanor Findley.
Donald Carlo married Eleanor on the 23/05/1894 in Coonamble on her 17th birthday...he was 47 ! however when her first child, Rosina BUXTON was born in 1898 she was with a James Buxton.
Her second child Florence Rhoda Buxton was born in 1902 in Victoria. Eleanor also had a 3rd daughter, Hannah.
She variously used the surnames Findley/Carlo/Buxton and she swapped the fathers Christian names of Donald/James/ Robert when she registered various births...her 4th child, Ada May Buxton eventually ended up being called Bonnie Foster as she took the 2 year old Ada with her when she left James Buxton circa 1909 and took up with a George Foster leaving behind her older 3 daughters. Hannah was fostered by the Seber family and has been traced but I was wondering what became of Rosina and Florence who where still quite young (under 12 years).
Because Eleanor was so 'creative' with the names of her children's fathers ect (although they all appear to have been James Buxton's off spring) they have not been able to be trace. Apparently Hannah, as an adult, knew nothing about either of her parents or her siblings .

Rosina's birth registration has the middle initial E which may help in the search
Rosina E Buxton
Birth and registration 1897
Narrandera, New South Wales
Father James Buxton
mother - Ellen

Thanks Crisane, I think that Rosina's middle name was Elizabeth...I should have mentioned that in my first post.
-
Looks like Donald Carlo died in Newtown in 1917 aged 70.

Thanks Bev..it may be worthwhile to get the death cert but I don't suppose it will tell me much about Rosina or Florence as it appears that they were not his children and that Eleanor had long since departed,
-
Hi Kasden,
There is a probate packet for Donald CARLO at NSW SRO which I can photograph for you next time I am there if you wish. It should have the death cert and his will - perhaps there is a small chance that he mentions the children in his will ???

Thanks Ros..yes all of that information does pertain to Eleanor's mother...the Mrs Gribble is her sister and of course she is Mrs Foster.....I have all this already but I don't have the probate packet for Elizabeth Gribble so I really appreciate your offer of a pic of it.
Eleanor Foster's desertion of her 3 older girls is a mystery to me, especially the 2 eldest...why?...and where did she leave them ?...I only have scant info on the 3rd child Hannah , who was 'fostered' with a family named Seber, and who apparently had a miserable childhood, but nothing at all on the older 2.

OK Kasden I'll photograph Elizabeth GRIBBLE's probate packet for you :)

Very interesting wivenhoe :) Good finds :)
On Gwendoline Hannah's marriage announcement it says she is youngest daughter of the late Alexander BUXTON http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article73006102 Yes possibly a cover story. :)

"... she (Eleanor) took the 2 year old Ada with her when she left James Buxton circa 1909 and took up with a George Foster.."
What is the earliest evidence you see of George FOSTER with Eleanor?
What happened to Eleanor and Ada May 1909+.
Who went looking for Hannah ( d. 1965) and why...how did they know to look for her?

The man James BUXTON had the second initial A and it possibly stood for Alexander.
By 1898 James Alexander BUXTON had selected in piece of land in excess of 600 acres in the Jerilderie district which is 50 kilometres south of Narrandera.
By 1902, he was not making the required payments and the land was forfieted

At Kyabram Cemetery BUXTON James Alexander 16 Jul 1914 45 years CE/2/27
BDM VIC birth
BUXTON James Alexander parents James / Rosa HARWOOD 1867 #13570
James Alexander BUXTON and Rosina Eleanor HARWOOD have children 1864 - 1889 in Victoria, including Rosina and Rhoda (sisters to James Alexander b. 1867)
-
Assuming these are children of Eleanor FINLEY - and see reply #17
The death notice, 1914, for James Alexander BUXTON has Rose (b 1898), Florrie(b. 1902), Gwen (b. 1904) and Will. So correct birth order, and suggests Will born after 1904.
Possibly?

Thank you all.......the information I have is from a distant family member , most of what I have received fro you all ties in with what I have been told...Eleanor muddied the waters a lot by using lots of names Helen, Ellen, Nellie, etc as well as Buxton, Carlo. Findley....add to that her 'partner/husband names of Donald and James...she once said one of her daughters fathers was Robert Carlo...Robert was actually her own fathers name.
It is a belief in our family that she bigamously married George Foster before her 1st husband, Donald Carlo, had died and also prior to her defacto James Buxton's demise....It was a surprise to see her mentioned in Hannah's wedding notice though because it was always believed that Hannah knew nothing of her parents and was raised by a foster family.

More on the death in July 1914 of James A Buxton of Epping who died at Kyabram
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/152634183
Sudden Death.— A man named James A. Buxton, licensed hawker, residing at Epping, who styled himself ' The Remnant King,' died suddenly at the Albion Hotel, Kyabram, yesterday morning. He had been hawking goods in a wagon through the district and came into Kyabram a few days ago and put up at the Albion Hotel. Being in ill-health, he consulted Dr Harconrt, who found him suffering from heart trouble. Yesterday morning Buxton said he was improving, but half-an-hour later be was found dead. The police took possession of his goods and notified his wife at Epping of her husband's demise.
This link is to a letter written to the newspaper by Rosena Ellen BUXTON when she was 13. It tells a little about herself.

Thanks Sue, I had not seen either of the Trove articles nor the headstone and am most grateful for your efforts. Rosina was obviously getting an education at the age of 13 but was a little old to be 'in the 4th grade' at that age, unless the system was somewhat different back then.
Again many thanks.

Pleased to have helped.
In closing I do feel a little sympathy for Ellen. We do not know the full story of her relationships and the facts of who deserted whom and why.
Perhaps the older CARLO was not a good husband and by the time she married FOSTER many years may have passed since she'd had contact with him.
I think the law was forgiving in the matter, and, if at least seven years of "whereabouts unknown" had elapsed, another marriage was allowed.
As for James BUXTON, well there is mention of "his wife" in the 1914 news item about his death, so someone was perhaps sharing family life with the children left behind by Ellen.
The wording of the marriage announcement placed by Gwendoline BUXTON sounds as if she was either not aware of, or not acknowledging the marriage of her mother to George FOSTER.
Interesting to note too, that in the death notice for James Alexander, the .existence of Ada as his child is not acknowledged.
Son Will remains a mystery ;D

you're right Sue...Ellen was only 17 when she married Donald Carlo, a man 30 years her senior, and so perhaps not what she expected...I know that George Foster lived in a nearby street to her while she was in the Buxton relationship though...and young Ada Buxton was always known as Bonnie Foster almost from the start....we can't look back at those days from today's perspective and make critical judgements...they were different times. But oh my, isn't it fascinating :D
