Hello: I'm trying to find an exact birth date for Frederick Hankey who was born on Corfu about 1822, the son of Sir Frederick Hankey, secretary to Sir Thomas Maitland, the Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands during the British Protectorate. Another problem is the identity of Sir Frederick's wife at the time of Hankey Jr's birth. Sir Frederick's English wife, Charlotte Hankey (she was his first cousin) died in 1816; he subsequently remarried (c. 1818 one surmises) someone identified only as as a "Greek lady" in all references I've been able to unearth. If anyone can help me with these problems, I'd be bery grateful.

The second wife was Mrs Catterina Vaslamo or Varlamo

The Chaplains Returns have this one:

ShaunJ -- Brilliant! Many thanks indeed for this. Thomasina-Ionia is Fred Hankey Jr's sister. -- Patrick

Hi Patrick
If you are going to order an 'overseas' records from the GRO online you'll need a date.
The year range on the records are 1818-1864 but the system will only accept the 1st 4 digits ie 1818 if you don't know exactly.
What is more important is the volume and page for overseas records.

Thanks, dawnsh. That might be a problem with Frederick Hankey Jr whose year of birth is reported variously as 1821 and 1822. But his father's marriage to his 'Greek Lady' can be narrowed down to late January 1819, thanks entirely to two of the references supplied by Shaunj for periodicals of the period -- "The Gentleman's Magazine" and "The Edinburgh Annual Register" -- which note the marriage, although the dating of the event is not too clear. I need, I think, to check these periodicals more closely. They include marriages and deaths of 'notables' and so may reasonably list births too.

Unfortunately, no record can confirm if he is born in 1821 or 1823.
There are different sources mentionning both years.
But he is born in Korfu for sure, like his sister.
