Title: please help to understand parish burial records
Post by: malijibic on Saturday 30 April 16 20:03 BST (UK)
Carno 1903
five columns:
Name  Abode  When buried  Age  By whom the ceremony was performed
First four columns self explanatory.
Up to now all I have seen in the last column is a name, followed by Curate, vicar or vicar of another parish.
But looking at four burials at Carno, from July to Sept, 1903 two are as expected, the last column for  other two reads  "Certified by, followed by a name."
eg Margaret Gittins    Certified by R Gittins  (same surname, could be a family member)
Evan Thomas    Certified by Mary Thomas  (again same surname, could be a daughter )
If anyone could tell me what the difference signifies, I would be very grateful.

Hi there

Having had a quick look at Carno burials in 1903, there are lots of entries where it says certified by, followed by a name - usually the same surname as the deceased. I don't actually know the answer but I wonder if these people may be the informant as shown on the death certificates? Just a guess really.

the burial will have taken place without the C of E service, so they were probably non-conformist but their place of worship did not have a burial ground or they were being buried with a relative who wasn't non-conformist. And yes, I know it's Wales, but the date is before disestablishment of the Church in Wales.

could the service at the graveside have been taken by a nonconformist minister?
