Haven't we established that his surname was changed on his mother's marriage to Barrett?

No , he never changed his name that I can tell . The George Barrett d:1935 was his step father . George William hamstone was never formally adopted .

There was not, and still is not, any Australian law prohibiting him from being known by any name, so long as he was not attempting to deceive or mis-represent himself. Basically, he did not need to formally change his name to become known by another name. He may never have known his birth was registered as Hamstone. He may not have needed his birth certificate for any identification purposes. He may have always been known by his mother's married surname. I feel it would be unusual for him to have been raised with his siblings and not be known by their surname.

ok- thanks for the info - we have been looking for him in australia under both names - no luck there either. what if he went overseas (as his mums obituary suggested - India) ? would his travel docs would have been in his birth name ?
thanks

Unable to find him anywhere in Passenger Records.
However Family Search do have a community tree, which gives an Australian date of birth.
George William Hamstone 9 Feb 1882 Binnum South Australia.
Father, Hibberd/Scott
Mother,SarahCaroline/Hamstone.
My question, where do names Hibberd and Scott come into this query.

Hi there,
Until 1949, there was no status 'Australian Citizen' .... and any passport would be obtained without the same level of scrutiny as say in 2016. He would not have needed to prove his name by presenting a certified South Australian birth certificate in order to obtain a passport. I do not know if India required British Subjects to present their passport when entering India in that era. India, like Australia was part of the British Empire.

According to that submitted tree at family search
Benjamin SCOTT and Martha HIBBERD had children : (in South Austraia)
Matilda 1872-1945
John James 1874-
Hibberd 1876 -
Florence 1880 -
And (still noting, according to that submitted tree) Hibberd SCOTT born 1876 was the father of George William HAMSTONE born 1882 to Sarah Caroline HAMSTONE. I do not think it likely that a lad, SIX years of age fathered George William HAMSTONE. Hibberd SCOTT's birth is given as 20 August 1876, Walkerville, South Australia.
ADD
See Genealogy SA for the birth index for Hibberd SCOTT, :) birth registered 1876, Adelaide district.
