Title: What happened to the Evenden family after 1861?
Post by: Helina on Tuesday 26 April 16 07:57 BST (UK)
William Evenden born 1827 in New Cross Surrey, married to Eliza who was born 1827 (c) Camberwell Surrey.  Sometime before 1848 they move to Deptford Kent where their first 2 children are born, Henry born 1848 (c) and William Charles born 1851.  The family then move to Brighton Sussex where a further 3 children are born Sarah born 1855, Jane born 1857 and Mary Ann born 1859.  They are together on the 1861 census than nothing.

Their mother dies in 1862 and William marries  Ellen who was born 1841 in New Cross Surrey.

They have a daughter Ellen born 1875 and can find her and her parents up to 1911, oh yes forgot Mary Ann is living with them in 1871.

But can find no record of William's 2 marriages. Have searched FreeBMD and familysearch no luck.  Apart from the 51/61 census can find no record of Henry born 1848, including birth reg.  Found the birth reg for Jane and Mary Ann but after 1871 for Mary Ann and 1861 for Jane can find nothing.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Have you ruled out this candidate marriage pairing?

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl?start=1850&end=1850&sq=1&eq=1&type=Marriages&vol=2&pgno=285&db=bmd_1460362145&jsexec=1&mono=0

and whose 1871 census do you have?
you  say that you have nothing after 1861, then you do...

Pauline,  Both anestry and find my past for the census.  Yes I have looked for marriages, births, deaths on FreeBMD even using different spelling. Thank you for your imput Pauline.

I am doing this tree for a relative  but he will not pay for any certificates as I have his direct line via son of William and Eiza, William Charles born 1851.  These are the siblings I am trying to find.  Did find a slight possibility on familysearch a marriage between William and a Elizabeth, although the county was correct district did not look right. But as I do not know who William's (born 1827) where which would of been helpful.

Thanks for the information on Charles Thomas born 1854, whiteout, did think there was a gap between William and Sarah.

Just had a look at the FreeBMD marriage you added, without a marriage certificate could not be sure and we are back to the name Elizabeth instead of Eliza ( possible the family called her Eliza) Again there are two Elizabeths????Pringle and Allen.

I suspect that this might be son Henry in 1881 living at  Newington given his father's birthplace

Henry Evendon    33 b New Cross Surrey Warehouseman
Esther Evendon    30 b Southwark, Surrey
Rosina Eversden 6
Henry Eversden    4
Ernest Eversden 1

Kay

Edit  - I think the same  Henry was listed as Henry Eovendon  in 1871 - a porter b 1850 Surrey living in St Mary Newington.  By 1891 Henry had died and Esther was a widow

William's marriage to Ellen is on ancestry:

William Evenden   widr.    Bricklayer          son of William Evenden, dead
married 5/6/1865 St. James, Bermondsey
Ellen Follings   spinster     dau. of Bartholomew Follings, gardener

I note there is not a birth or baptism entry for the firstborn Henry ca.1848 which suggests he could have been born prior to William's marriage to Eliza (if indeed there was one) and birth registered in Eliza's maiden name.   All the other childrens births are registered.

There is a birth reg on  familysearch for a Henry, but of course his surname would not be Follings, my mistake.

Hi Helena
My husband's 2nd Great Grandfather is William Charles Evenden.  I have done extensive research on this family for my husband and in-laws so I would like to connect.  If you would like to contact me and then I can give you my mobile no.  I am located in Doncaster Victoria. I am sure I can fill in a lot of your gaps and would be interested to know the descendant you are helping with their family history.  My mother-in-law's name is Ann Campbell (nee Evenden) who is the granddaughter of William Patrick Evenden & Elsie May Kilby/Burrows, and father of William P is William Charles Evenden & Mary Callaghan.  Further there is important information on the death of Mary Evenden (need Callaghan) I need to make you aware of, or maybe you know already.
Must go, send me a message if you are interested.
Regards, Gen Campbell
