Hi,
My ancestors Matthew and Mary Hilton came to Australia in 1882 with six children.
In 1881 they were living at 25 Victoria Street, in Pemberton.
I have a photo of Mary, and on the back is the following note “Photo taken approx. 1881 – Mary HILTON (nee ROWE) born 1848 (wife of Matthew HILTON) arrived Sydney on sailing ship Hereford in 1882”.
In the 1871 census Mary is living in New Town, Pemberton with a widowed Mary ROWE 52
Mary is recorded “Mary* HILTON, Boarder, 22, Wigan, Lancashire”. Her children living with her are those of Matthew HILTON.
In the 1861 census Mary is living with Louis ROWE and Mary ROWE.
Mary is recorded “Mary ROWE, Daughter, 13, Wigan, Lancashire”
I am trying to confirm Mary’s mother.
From the Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerks database is the following marriage information:
Matthew HILTON - 21, Carpenter, Bachelor, of New Town, Pemberton m Mary JOLLEY - (X), 19, Cotton Spinner, Spinster, of New Town, Pemberton 29 Jul 1867 at St John the Divine, Pemberton, Lancashire
Fathers listed as Matthew HILTON, Carpenter and bride's father Lewis ROWE, Coal Miner
Witness: Thomas Burns; Ann Marsden
Mary is recorded as Mary JOLLEY. I cannot connect the surname “JOLLEY”. All of the other information in the marriage is correct.
Was the surname JOLLEY an entry error, or could there be another explanation.
In the 1871 census there is an * after her name. Would this refer to a note that she was a daughter as well as a boarder?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards, OURA, Australia

Hello,
1851 2199/368/51 - transcribed as Tolley
Mary Tolley 33 yrs
Nancy 12 yrs
Elizabeth 9 yrs
Sarah 7 yrs
Mary 2 yrs
Margaret 10 months
There is a marriage for Mary Cunliffe and Thomas Jolly 1842
Lancashire BMD shows Stephen Rowe's birth as Stephen Rowe Jolly with mother Cunliffe.
That looks to be the explanation possibly.

Since my first query I have two more pieces of the puzzle.
From Mary's Australian death certificate her father is recorded as "William JOLLY", mother "Unknown". And from a family bible Mary was born on the 6th August 1848. Her husband Matthew HILTON was born on the 13th May 1848. Their first child, Thomas was born on the 4th November 1867.
I am hoping that with this additional information someone can help me find Mary's mother.

Are you now saying that your Mary is not the one with mother Mary Rowe that you refer to earlier?

Hi Heywood,
The pieces of information that are correct as far as I can determine are:
Mary HILTON died in 1926 in Australia, father "William JOLLY", mother "Unknown". This information was provided on her death certificate by her son "Matthew HILTON". Her grandson James HILTON kept the family bible which records that "Mary HILTON" wife of "Matthew HILTON" was born on the 6th August 1848. I have a photograph of Mary which has on the back, "Photo taken approx. 1881 – Mary HILTON (nee ROWE)". The Lancashire census information shows that "Mary ROWE" was living with Louis ROWE and Mary ROWE in 1861 before she married Matthew HILTON in 1867, where she was recorded as Mary JOLLEY, with the father of the bride being Lewis JOLLEY. Mary HILTON is recorded as living with Mary ROWE in 1871 as a boarder with three of her children and with Matthew HILTON at 25 Victoria Street, Pemberton in 1881.
This is what I have so far.
It appears that Mary JOLLEY was born in 1848 in Wigan to William JOLLEY and was possibly adopted with her siblings by Louis and Mary ROWE.
Thank you Garstonite for your feedback.

My apology Heywood,
In my last note I incorrectly said that the father of the bride at Mary JOLLEY's marriage was Lewis JOLLEY, he was Lewis ROWE.
-
My theory is the one I have already mentioned.
Mary Cunliffe married Thomas Jolley (father William) 1842
Thomas Jolley died 1843 - there is a death and I think it is him.
1851 Mary 'Tolley'
Unfortunately I can't find Lewis/Louis Rowe in 1851
1861 - you have the family already.
It looks as though Mary Cunliffe had at least two children before 1841 as a single mother.
She had Sarah Jolley in 1843.
Other children - not sure re parentage but there are Cunliffe births with mother as Cunliffe. However it is a common name.
Later children may be the children of Lewis Rowe - I mentioned Stephen Jolley Rowe.
I haven't gone into more details because it is just my theory and doesn't fit with yours :)

Many thanks for your help Heywood, much appreciated.
Unless some new records turn up I think your theory will prove correct.
Kind regards, Oura, Australia

Yes, I think that is it.
The censuses fit for the two Marys for 1851, 1861 and 1871.
It would be interesting to find Lewis in 1851 but I can't. It might explain why there is no marriage to be found between him and Mary snr.
It is puzzling why those details were provided by her son. The naming of William Jolley as father can be understood - a mix up between Thomas and his father's name, however he was dead before she was born. In our theory, though, Mary Cunliffe was there through to adulthood.
As you say, it will have to suffice until something else turns up. I did spot a baptism for Mary, daughter of Mary - no father named so that may be the answer.

Heywood
