Hello to all Solomon Bockerah followers. I have been on his trail but surprisingly found in the NSW Archives a reference that shows he died on the voyage of the Scarborough (2). I have attached the record, Dd means died on voyage. This was sourced from the book "The Second Fleet Convicts. A comprehensive listing of convicts who sailed in HMS Guardian, Lady Juliana, Neptune, Scarborough and Surprise, edited by RJ Ryan, 1982. This was a complete surprise. It refers to the NSW Archives. Any thoughts?

Regarding the record you have seen: It records that he died - (not necessarily on the voyage). The remarks in the left margin have been added at some later date to the indent. You can see which convicts had escaped, and who were pardoned, and who had died. Solomon died 16 July 1791, about 1 year after arriving in NSW. So the margin notes were made after that time.
Reverend Richard JOHNSON who kept the births, death and marriage register of the colony noted in the “Register of Burials at Sydney Cove” that on 16th June 1791, he had buried “Solomon Bockron, convict, a jew”. This was Solomon Bockerah, thought to be one of the few Sephardic Jews to be deported to Australia.
(The Register of Burials at Sydney Cove is in the Mitchell library.)
When looking at NSW BMD online, there are 2 available records for him - note spelling.
BOCKRON SOLOMON 321/1791 V1791321
BOCKROW SOLOMON 297/1791 V1791297

Yes, also mentioned here in an article about early Judaism in the Colony. Also noted as "BOCKROH"
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article261466204 (pg 29, under "Burial")

To Neale 1961, thanks for clearing that up but it does appear very strange that notes of death would be added at a later time, more than a year. Was it a running commentary then? I do see "escaped", which is hardly an entry on the high seas!! I hear what you are saying with the record of Solomon in the Register of Burials at Sydney Cove so I'll take it as read. I also see the newspaper entry, but I have always been careful using those as gospel. Now I must alert RJ Ryan who edited "The Second Fleet Convicts" who shows him as dying on the voyage. There may be many others wrongfully shown.

Disappointing that Ryan did not do the basic research needed, using records which can be found quite easily.
It does make one suspicious that there will be other errors. :-\

Snippet from burial register attached.

Thanks for that snippet. I see he had a ticket of leave did he?

This is a burial record. It gives date, name and then ditto (abbrev.), then “a jew”.

Ok I see that now, wasn't expecting those words, trying to read something else into it. Thanks for your help.
