Title: Trying to find McKendrick family in 1870 in PEI
Post by: sccond on Sunday 03 April 16 21:42 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I am back to researching my McKendrick ancestors in PEI. The particular branch I am looking at now is at follows:

Hugh McKendrick b-abt 1815, PEI
wife Penelope (Penzie) b-ant 1817
  children Mary - 1848
               Margaret (Maggie)-1850
               Catherine - 1854
               Edward - 1853
               Janie - 1856
               William - 1859
               John L. - 1862
               Penelope - 1863
Children are born in PEI.  The family emigrates to Taunton, MA in 1872 according to the 1900 census.  I see the family in Taunton in 1900, 1910 and some of the children in future census's. I'm trying to locate the family in PEI in 1870 or earlier to confirm children, etc.  Can anyone see them??

Thanks as always, Lisa

Sandra,

Thanks so much for the quick reply! I did have the birth records for the children but had not seen the 1860 census.  The 9 single people would make since since in the 1900 census states there were 9 children born to the couple. Still trying to sort names of children.  If you happen to see this family in 1870 in PEI or MA.....

Thanks again!!! :)

Death for Penelope Mackay McKendrick-

I'm wondering if the Sarah Jane bapt.1860 (born 1859?) is the daughter Janie 1856 from your list. Also, if the John L. 1862 on your list is Lauchlin born 1860.

William's death certificate gives middle name Kear and date of birth as 24 Apr.1861

Mary's death certificate gives birthdate as 20 July 1849

John's death certificate gives middle name as Lachlan & birthdate 9 Aug.1860 (see my comment above)

Family tree here mentions Hugh McKendrick & wife selling land in 1866- perhaps when they went to Massachusetts?

Wow!  A lot to consider.  I had come to the conclusion that John was in fact Lauchlin.  I'M not sure who Sarah Jane belongs to. The birth record for Sarah Jane states parents as Charles and Penelope; Hugh has a brother Charles who has a daughter "S. Jennie" on census's with dob around 1860. But mother is Catherine.  So...it could be Janie with wrong father or Sarah Jane with wrong mother. So I haven't used that birth record. And I hadn't used that death record for Mary because ages were a little off.  I'll have to go back and look at census's again closer.

And I really will have to look very closely at the tree you found. I can already see I may have the wrong brother (to Hugh) Neil in my tree. Lots of great info to sort thru. Thanks for finding it!!

Thanks for the help, Lisa

A full census of PEI was carried out in 1871, but with a tiny exception the returns have been lost to history.  Cannot find a reason for this loss.

All may not be lost  ;)

1871 Census is missing except for lots 34 and 36. A book entitled The Index to the 1870 Commissioner of Public Land's Report is a census substitute and is available from the Prince Edward Island Genealogical Society. Information about the book can be found at http://www.peibooks.ca/GenealogyResources/1870CommissionerReport.html

Aghadowey - Thanks so much!  Having trouble opening the peibooks link but will keep trying. Interestingly, the family tree link you sent me does not have my actual branch-Malcolm Mckendrick- b abt 1803 in PEI, son of Malcolm John McKendrick and Nancy McKay. Buts lots of other interesting information to sort thru.

Thanks again!  Lisa

Another question; not sure if it should be here or another post -

I am wondering if anyone would know if I could get a picture of the following as I am in Pennsylvania and not likely able to ever get to PEI and my McKendricks and Stewarts appear to have been on the Annabella:

A cairn to the Annabella stands in Cabot Park at Malpeque (formerly Princetown) the inscription on which is as follows:

"On this shore the barque Annabella from Campbellton, Scotland was wrecked in October 1770. Her passengers, having lost all their possessions found welcome shelters in French homes. In spite of extreme hardship, these emigrants and their descendants by their faith and courage made worthy contributions to the development of a progressive community, province and country.
Sixty families arrived on the Annabella and included such names as: Allanby, Carr, English, Inglis, MacKendrick, MacNeill, MacMillan, MacIntosh, MacArthur, MacDougall, MacGougan, MacKay, MacKenzie, Murphy, Montgomery, Sinclair, Stewart, Smith, Ramsay, Taylor and Woodside.
"To honour these pioneers and commemorate the arrival of the Annabella this monument is erected. September 6, 1964"

Thanks again!!  Lisa
