Title: Currie family -- Mariposa Twp., Ontario.
Post by: krellia on Saturday 02 April 16 22:46 BST (UK)
Alexander (Alex) CURRIE was born abt. 1818 in Islay Island, Argyll, Scotland and married Mary (Gillespie). Known children from this marriage include: Margaret Currie, Christine Currie, Mary Currie, Janet Currie, Ann Currie, Donald Currie, Christina Currie, May Currie, Alexander Currie and Isabella Currie.

In 1861 the family is living in Mariposa Township. There appears to be three other Currie families living in the area at the same time.

Neil Curry, 34; Ann, 28; Archy, 9; Malcom, 6; Christina, 4; Peter, 1.

Duncan Curry , 38; Christina, 29, Mary, 4; Flora, 3; Lauchlin, 1.

John Curry, 55; Flora, 47; John, 25; Neil, 18; Duncan, 15; James, 10; Alexander, 6; Angus, 4. Next reads: Mary, 20; Janet, 17; Ann, 12; Jane, 8.

Are these families related? I have not been able to find parental records!

According to my research Neil's wife, Ann, was also a Gillespie. Duncan may also be referred to as James who was married to Christina Gillespie. I have not been able to locate Flora's maiden name.

I also have not been able to locate these families in the 1851 census, so I am thinking they were located in Scotland at this time.

Hi,

Could this be the death record for Donald Currie?  Says parents are Alexander Currie and Mary "Glaspie".  If so - Donald born in Ontario in 1856, died in Toronto in 1926.  Burial Port Hope.

The 1851 census records for Mariposa twp have not survived... so if the family was in Mariposa, you won't be able to find them using census records. :'(

Have you seen this tree?

Says Alexander and Mary were married in Victoria County, Ontario in 1836 ???

Hi again,

County Atlas for Mariposa (1881 date) has John Currie, born in Argyleshire 1810.  Perhaps he is a cousin or brother of your Alexander b 1818?  The plot of land was settled in 1841.

Hi...  :) :)

I completely understand your problem sorting out various family lines, when they all seem to have come from the same place and use the same names for their kids!!  They are very likely related - but how??

Have you checked the local cemeteries?  You might find family groups buried in the same cemetery.  Hopefully, they list relationships on the stones (my own Scots/Canadian ancestors put a lot of very helpful information on their stones :)).
I had a look in the OFCA for Curry/Currie in Victoria County.... don't see an Alexander with Mary combination.

Hmmm - doesn't mean they aren't there though.  Might have to check cemetery transcripts (see library and OGS links below)

The other things to look at would be local history books.  I searched the Mariposa, a Banner Township book, but didn't find any family history for your Curries :'(

In the 1861 census that you mention - it shows that the Curry families you are interested in are Congregationalists.

I checked the Mariposa book for the history of that denomination in Mariposa... hoping that it might lead to a specific church.  Lots of Churches had histories printed for their 50th, 100th anniversaries etc.  I was hoping to find a church, then perhaps a history about that church and its members.

unfortunately, it looks like the Congregational churches in Mariposa weren't all that "stable" so there might not be any church histories to find!!

To find baptism/marriage/burial records pre 1869, you could check the United Church of Canada Archives (Congregationalist joined with other denominations in the 1920s to form the UCC).

Also,  you could check with the kawartha Lakes library.  Perhaps they have local history/genealogy records about pioneer familes - that could help sort things out for you.

The local branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society might also be able to help..

I also have not been able to locate these families in the 1851 census, so I am thinking they were located in Scotland at this time.

The 1861 census shows that all of the listed children were born in Canada West.   Margaret is 22, so born in 1849... in Canada West.

Did Alex and Mary move to Brock township, Ontario County???

http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/1871/jpg/4396619_00437.jpg
Could be them in 1871... with kids Donald and CHristina.

1881 with Donald and family next to them

If so, you might need to change the search from Victoria County to Ontario County to see if you can find records to sort out the family.

I don't envy you... this is very hard!!!!  I will keep looking to see what I can find.  I have lots of ancestors from Mariposa and Brock... I have some cemetery transcripts that I can check when I am at home again next week.

I see from reading your tree that you think the Alexander and Mary in Brock in 1871, 1881 and 1891 are yours.  Posting links so everyone can see the census records.  They always say they are Congregationalist.

1891 in Brock... son Daniel above them?

If this A Currie on the County Atlas for Brock is your man, they the nearest town would be Cannington.  You might want to center you search for records in that area.

Perhaps a library could see if something could be found in the local papers about Alexander and Mary - maybe a note about an anniversary?  If they were married in the 1830s (as you have in your tree), they would have had their 50th anniversary in the 1880s... a write up might let you know who is who in the family??  You often find good family histories in milestone anniversary articles in local papers.... fingers crossed!!

The Reverend Archibald Currie was the Presbyterian minister to the congregation of "Brock, Reach and Mariposa" from about 1866 to 1888.
I don't know if he's one of yours or not.
He lived in the village of Sonya from 1873, where he bought a house.
Sonya is at the intersection of the 3 above-named townships.
I have a photo of him and a bit of info about his ministry there, but nothing about his family.
He was alive in 1902.

The Presbyterian cemetery which serves Sonya is the McNeil cemetery, which is on the 2nd concession of Brock two.  It is known locally as the Wick cemetery.

Send PM with your email address if you want the info on this fellow's career and photo.

Presbyterian Archives, in Toronto, would likely know more about him such as where he came from and where he was educated, which I do not know.  The photo says he had an M.A.

In addition, I can verify that most of the Scottish settler families in that immediate area came from Argyl.
