Title: Wood family.
Post by: pink_princess on Saturday 02 April 16 22:11 BST (UK)
Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone can help with a little family mystery! We've found photo's in a family album dated 1949 of a baby called Susan. We think she is connected to my mum's aunt Gladys Byford nee Wood (born 1924 or 26 not sure of death). Susan would have been born in the Leyton, East London area. I've tried looking for any records but have got very stuck! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Kathryn

When did Gladys marry Mr Byford?

I would hazard a guess that Gladys married Ted in around 1945. Sorry I can't be more specific,we've got limited info.
Thanks Kathryn

Edward Byford, as far as you know?

Anything else, as cannot yet see marriage?

Do you know who Gladys Wood's parents were?

This is the only scenario that I can find:

Marriages September Quarter 1943

WOOD, Gladys F
GOODSPEED, Leslie A.G.
Essex S.W.
Vol. 4a Page 452

Leslie Albert George GOODSPEED, KIA 1944

http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2766245/GOODSPEED,%20LESLIE%20ALBERT%20GEORGE

Marriages March Quarter 1946

BYFORD, Edward E.
GOODSPEED, Gladys F
Essex S.W. Vol. 4a  Page 446

Leslie and Gladys do not appear to have any registered children.

How old is the child in the photo?  A new baby?

Birth for Gladys? (but cannot see a death)

Births March quarter  1910   Gladys Fanny Wood        Wandsworth  1d 490

But if the baby is definitely called Susan, and as a 'baby' in 1949 born 1947 to 1949...

Added:
Sorry, forgot Gladys's birth around 1925.  Try again.

1926 in West Ham.  Married first when 17?

Has she died?

Gladys F and Edward E were on the ER for 2002 in Billericay.

The house looks to have been sold in 2002 (and 2015), so possibly died or left that address.

Is this 'Ted's' death:
Edward Ernest Byford born 5th March 1924
died in May 2002 at Brentwood

Gladys's parents were John Thomas Wood & Cissie Irene Firth  (surname on birth cert was Pritlove), she would have been born in Walthamstow & the family moved to Leyton in about 1938. Gladys was in the Land Army during the war, not sure where based, after the war & married Gladys & Ted lived with her parents in Leyton. They had a son Roger born about 1946. In the photo it says from 1949 & Susan is a babe in arms. Gladys has died can't remember year but she had moved with her daughter some years before to France.  They did eventually move out of London, I'll have to see if mum knows where to.
