Post by: martinlane on Saturday 24 July 04 10:07 BST (UK)
Could someone look up 1881 and 1891 for 21 Alpha Square, Walworth please. I have the marriage certificate for Thomas ALDCROFT who was at this address 15 Dec 1883 registered Camberwell, Surrey. Any ALDCROFT info will be much appreciated.

No sign yet of Thomas Aldcroft in the immediate area in 1891 but I don't have the index for that.  Have checked the 1881: there are only 38 listed.  Discounting the very old and the too young, that leaves about 20.  Any idea of age or his father's name?

Thanks Nell,

Thomas was 27 when he married so was born 1856/7. His father was also Thomas, originating from Manchester or Cheshire but was noted "deceased" on Thomas junior's marriage cert.

Hi martinlane,

This is the only one who seems to fit the bill:

41 Castle Street, Castle Northwich, Cheshire
FHL Film 1341843     PRO Ref RG11/ 3522/77 p 47

James POOLE   M   65    M   Northwich, Cheshire,
Head   Occ:   Retired Waterman
Elizabeth POOLE   M   56    F   Chester, Cheshire,
Wife
John T. POOLE   U   19    M   Northwich, Cheshire,
Son    Occ:   Tin Plate Worker
William H. POOLE   U   17    M   Northwich, Cheshire,
Son    Occ:   Painter
Charles F. POOLE       15    M   Northwich, Cheshire
Son   Occ:   Invoice Clerk
Arthur S. POOLE       12    M   Northwich, Cheshire,
Son    Occ:   Scholar
Thomas ALCROFT   U   25    M   Eccles, Lancashire,
Nephew    Occ:   Iron Founder

I presume the occupation fits considering the occupation of Joseph Stone in 1881 & 1891.

Yes thank you Nell

This one does look a possibility but it's from the 1881 census and shows him as married, 2 years before the date on the certificate. Could be an error or it could have been an earlier marriage(?).

Thomas junior had a son Harry, b.12/08/1889 by his wife Mary Ann (nee Gray). The birth certificate, registration district Camberwell, sub-district St George Camberwell, shows them living at 340 St. James's Road. Presumably this is also in the Newington/Kennington/Walworth area.

Would you be able to look up this address on the 1891 census. Your help is very much appreciated.

Martin

Hi martinlane

Actually, he's not married (that's what the U means - unmarried), the M means he's Male!

At 340 St. James' Rd in 1891 is the Morgan family (Peter & wife Marie) plus children William, Jane, Peter, John, Albert & Ernest.  No sign of Aldcroft in the immediate area.  Sorry that I can't be the bearer of good news.

Thanks for putting me right on the "m"!! Still some work to do here I fear but now I realise that Thomas is unmarried I'll get his birth cert and investigate the Eccles area.  Thank you for getting me a bit further forward, your help is appreciated.
