My ancestor Richard Knowles was baptised in 1773 in Clapham - the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Betty) nee Hazlegrove.
Jacob and Elizabeth were married in Patching in 1761 and I believe Elizabeth was baptised there in 1739
As for Jacob... the only potential baptism i can locate for him is in Cowfold. There is a James Knowles listed as being baptised in 1732 baseborn to Mary Greenville. However there are other children listed before and after this date as children of Jacob and Mary Knowles.
I would love to find out if this is my Jacob, but I can't locate a marriage for Jacob and Mary to substantiate any of this
Any help would be really appreciated

Hi
If you look at one of the children born, JOHN LINTOTT Knowles 1717, there is a clue to the first Mary's marriage
Jacob KNOWLES married Mary LINTOTT 19 Mar 1715 Saint Andrew By The Wardrobe,London, by licence
Perhaps this Mary died, and he later married the other Mary, but I can't see a marriage

Have you made a mistake with your post, FS have these baptisms, 1732 it was a JACOB that was baptized rather than a JAMES.
James KNOWLES was bapt. 19 January 1721 Cowfold, son of Jacob and Mary.
JACOB KNOWLES bapt. 12 August 1732, Cowfold son of Mary GREENVILLE and Jacob Knowles

I checked familysearch and saw the baptism - but when I check against the Cowfold parish records on CD it states that it is James Knowles so Mary Greenville (baseborn) with a note that Jacob Knowles is the reputed father.
I have no access to the original records to clarify this, as all other baptisms for Cowfold before and after this date list the children as son/daughter of Jacob and Mary.
Do you think the first Mary died after the last child (Henry 1731) and he possibly then remarried another Mary after James/Jacob was born?

Bishops Transcript (somewhat faded image) says
Cowfold - 1732
Christenings
Aug. 13 Jacob Son of Mary Greenville by supposed father Jacob Knowles

Hi
I've checked Anc* and they too, have the baptisms as James bpt. 1721, and Jacob bpt. 1732.
If you look at the bpt. of Henry 1731 ( there are 2 one in Sept. and one in November ~ which is right ?) ~ it is just a year later or 9 months (depending which baptism of Henry is correct) till your Jacob was born.
The father Jacob was either being a bit naughty ;) or there are two Jacobs, look at this record
Henry KNOWLES or GRANT bpt. 31 Jan 1730 son of Jacob Knowles and Sarah Grant.
EDIT: record states b*st*rd son. Supposed father Jacob Knowles.

Hi
Have you considered this Jacob as your potential father of Richard, as the family have ties in London
Jacob KNOWLES bpt. 27 Aug 1734 St Andrews, Holborn. Son of George and Sarah

Why do we need ties in London?
On the marriage record in 1761 Joseph is of parish of Clapham
That is presumably Clapham in Sussex

My mistake, sorry.

Well I didn't know there was a Clapham in Sussex until this came up.

No I'm afraid I didn't either :)
That is looking quite good for the Jacob bpt. 1732 Cowfold
