Title: Local help needed for Eastham area
Post by: Beeonthebay on Sunday 27 March 16 17:03 BST (UK)
Hello, I am looking up some baptisms at Eastham St Mary's in the 1790's.  The town of the parents on all the baptisms is given as Pooltown or Pool Town yet when I go to Genuki Cheshire there is no such town.  The nearest to it I can find in the same area is Overpool.

Are they one and the same?

I've just found the next baptism in 1802 and it clearly says Overpool on this one, maybe it was a local name?

I should have made it clearer on my OP the town of Pooltown or Pool Town is on the baptisms for my own particular family.

Maybe they meant Pooltown Road rather than Pool Town as it appears to be a long road.  ???

The Chester Chronicle - Saturday 25 August 1917. Pooltown, Military Medal for Pooltownite. The little village of Pooltown has probably sent more sons to the front than any other place in the country according to its population...........
There are other mentions of Pooltown in the Chester Chronicle from 1808.

According to the Chronicle the Military Medal was awarded to a Private A. Godbold, age 24. In the 1911 Census the Godbolds are living in Overpool, Whitby, and they have a son Henry, aged 17. It looks as though Pooltown could be another name for Overpool.

Maybe,  it has since been pronounced as Poulton.

Often place names are pronounced in the local area  differently from how outsiders articulate the word(s).

Bath, for example, or Bury, or Kirkby, or Towcester

I would agree - Poulton is now how it is pronounced - Poulton Victoria are a very well known local football team on Merseyside ...
