I'm having great difficulty finding any further details of William Alfred Hyde the father of William Alfred Hyde, Manchester, source marriage cert- married Ethel Gatliffe May 1920 St Agnes, Manchester, died Feb 1944.
born c Aug 1891 (according to 1939 register but could be 1886 according to his will)
The only William Alfred I can find on the 1901 census his fathers name is James Hyde.
Can anyone help with this brickwall
Many thanks
Jill

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
How old is he on the 1920 marriage cert and what is his fathers occupation
-
His death registration shows he was 55 when he died - so born around 1889
Deaths March qtr1944
William A Hyde 55 Manchester 8d 37
You mention a will but I can't see any probate register entry
-
Hi thanks for getting it touch, he was 22yrs on his marr cert and his occ was store keeper. His father is noted as deceased Grocer. They were living at 7 Thornwood Ave Gorton.
-
22yr old in 1920 gives 1898 as his birthyear which is a big difference to his death birthyear
-
I've got his will notice which is correct as he mentions his daughter Florence Hyde (my Grandmother)
and his wifes brother Robert Gatliffe. So he says he's 55yrs when he died in 1944, which tallys with the marriage age/date. But I cant find him on the census at all.

No it doesn't - see my reply above
-
Do you know for certain that he was born in Lancashire?
-
No I don't really have any evidence to prove that.
Sorry my laptop just threw me off its updating Windows so I'm on my phone 🙄
-
Only 3 William Alfred Hyde births between 1885-1900. One in Lancs - father James. One in Wales - father Joshua and one in Surrey 1898 that I'm still trying to find in 1901
-
Thanks Carole, I went running with the one with James until I got the marr cert then realised it was the wrong father, let's hope the one in Surrey is a William Alfred.
Thanks Jill

In 1901 Hackney, London, there is a William A Hyde aged 1 his father is William J Hyde and he's a wholesale grocer.
How am I going to know which one is mine?

Not having any luck at the moment
the father of William Alfred Hyde, Manchester, source marriage cert- married Ethel Gatliffe May 1920 St Agnes, Manchester, died Feb 1944.
I can't see any marriage in 1920 with either of those names
-
I did have to go to m/c lib for a copy of cert, not sure if they're on ancestry yet.
Sorry it's 1921 and she is called Ethel smith because she's a widow and he was 33 yrs when he married I was looking on the one above🙄
-
That makes a big difference to his birthyear. Aged 33 in 1921 makes birthyear approx 1888 which fits in with his age at death
-
The marriage was in St Agnes North Redditch Stockport which is Cheshire as per www.cheshirebmd.org.uk
-
Very tenuous but see what you think
Birth in St Olave RD Sept qtr 1889 for an Alfred William Hyde
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2XTJ-HX5
1891 - can't find him
1901 - he's an inmate at Upton House Truant School aged 13
-
This looks interesting, I'll investigate that birth in St Olave, Bermondsey, and the truant school in 1901 is quite amusing :D
Thanks for your efforts Carole most appreciated

The 1911 has an entry for him in the Navy
I have a feeling he was illegitimate and made up a fathers name when he married to appear "respectable". Quite a common practice in those days.
