Title: Is this a UK Merchant Navy uniform?

Can anyone help to identify or date the uniform this young man is wearing please? I believe it could be a relative who later became connected with the Hain Shipping Company.

Hi...I tried to enlarge it to post a bigger image but the photo is too small to get any detail from the cap badge...if you can scan it at a resolution of 300dpi you will get a better output. This will bring your post back up the board for you.

This photo is a relative who was a M N Chief Engineer. Compare the hat badge .

It is in my opinion a Merchant Navy badge - not clear enough to identify the insignia though.
Of course other methods may confirm his service. Do you wish to give a name date and place of birth?
