I had a great great aunt who resided in 173 Great Brunswick Street (Pearse Street) during the 1901 census, but disappeared for the 1911 census. For quite a while, we all assumed that she had perhaps gotten married or something like that. Last night, I was reading through my various relatives' pension applications. My great great grandfather, Thomas Fitzgerald, applied for his son, Leo's pension, as he had been financially dependent on him ( http://mspcsearch.militaryarchives.ie/detail.aspx?parentpriref= ). In this form, he is asked to list his living children and their occupations. He lists Fanny as a patient in a mental hospital. I realise that this isn't very much to go off, but does anyone know how I can find out what happened to her?

Welcome to RootsChat Nessa
If she was in an mental hospital by 1911 she will be listed by her initials only.
There one girl in Dublin but she doesn't quite fit, her age is given as 21 and she was born in Kingstown Co.Dublin.
The family in 1901

Attempted suicides often appear in the prison registers but I don't see her there either.

Thank you, but I don't think that's her. I think the age is wrong somewhere (she's down as being 16 in 1901 but 28 in 1924, which is too young by the age given in 1901, but too old by the age given in 1924). Is there anywhere else she may have been sent? I'm beginning to wonder was she perhaps sent to a hospital outside Dublin.

Hello,
Is that not her on the 1911 posted - Proinsias, 21 yrs.
Heywood
-
Could be. I was thrown because Proinsias is a boy's name. Age is still funny though.
-
That's how I recognised. I knew a man called Proinsias a few years ago.
The ages of the others are out too.
-
The ages of the others match other records though. Seems odd that they could never get the age of their daughter right.
-
The census ages do not match though- perhaps births, marriages etc do.
The children seem to age on average by 7 yrs between censuses.
Thomas 18 - 24 yrs
Julia 17 - 23 yrs
Fanny 16 - 21 yrs
And so on.
The younger ones are more accurate,
-
I did notice that Proinsias but assumed I hadn't a clue :D
So she was born 1886
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/84af230255541
So the 1901 has the closest to correct ages.
It still doesn't answer the question of why she ended up in an asylum.
Where is the family buried perhaps if we could find her death, her death cert might help.

Hi Dathai,
The 1945 burial of a Frances Fitzgerald, she is a widow of a car man, so only married into Fitzgerald family.
James Fitzgerald, Frances or Fanny Fitzgerald's brother was buried in Deansgrange in 1962, wonder if she is there?

Can you private email me, I could be related here? If you can give me any information it would help greatly. I am also trying to connect all Fitzgerald families
from Dublin, so I have a large number of records. I started project as a result of lack of family information . Some amazing results over the years
