i am looking for information about Maryanne Devine who married Edward Edler. Her marriage certificate indicates she was a widow. I cannot track her first husband. I think this would have been somewhere in hunter valley, but not necessarily. She married Edward in Sydney.
Also looking for details of her mother Deborah Lennard, of Ireland and her father Mathew Devine before he was sent to Australia as a convict.

It is unusual for a widow to marry under her maiden surname and the 'widow' is sometimes used to explain away illegitimate children. Do you have the names of her children from her death certificate?
Debra :)

Matthew's convict records state that he was Catholic and a native of Dublin so you may be lucky enough to find a baptism for him:

Matthew and Deborah had two children after civil registration commenced in NSW so either of those birth certificates will give Deborah's age and birthplace.

This may be Mary Ann in 1862/1863:
REFUSING TO MAINTAIN AN ILLEGITIMATE CHILD - John Carroll was summoned before the bench at West Maitland yesterday, to answer to the summons of Mary Ann Devine, who charged him with refusing to maintain his illegitimate child. Mr. Mullen appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Brennan for defendant. M. A. Devine said the information was true. John Carroll is a painter and glazier, and earns £2 per week. The child was born 14th October last. Joseph Trappell, groom to Dr. Liddell knew plaintiff, who had been in the same service. Knew defendant, who came to the kitchen one Saturday about six months ago, and took her out for a walk. It was late when she came home - about half-past ten. She came in by herself. The case was postponed until Thursday, to allow the plaintiff time to procure some more witnesses.

REFUSING TO OBEY A MAINTENANCE ORDER - John Carroll was summoned by Mary Ann Devine, and appeared before tho bench at West Maitland, on Thursday, to answer a charge of neglecting to pay the amount of maintenance ordered by the bench some time back, towards the support of his illegitimate offspring. The arrears (23 weeks) were paid up, and the complainant did not appear.

Thanks Debra, you have certainly given me some good ideas to follow up. It looks like I will be busy over Easter. Not sure which parish church Mathew would have used so will have to plough through the registers a little at a time.
Thanks again

Hi Marilyn
I am also MaryAnn's greatgrandaughter. her child born in 1862 was named Edward but only lived a short time. He was the son of a John Carroll and Mary Ann. She took JOhn to court a couple of times for paternity and won. She was obviously very determined. The cases are reported in the Maitland Mercury.
Edward Edler, her husband, was my great grandfather. His son Charles, my grandfather.
How are you connected to MaryAnn?

* Check the following reference on Trove. She placed this personal notice for an entire year. Sadly, I don't believe Edward ever saw it.
