Hi, My Gt Grandfather - in law was living in Guildford at an address shown on the 1881 Census - trouble is we cannot decipher the Adress shown. It's .......? Cottages.
Perhaps someone out there in Guildford can make out where it is please?

Cheers
Barbara.

Hi rosie99,
Looks like a good bet. Any idea if there is such an address still in Guildford?
Thanks, barbara.
-
Could it be short for Primrose Cottages?
Can you post a snippet with an 'r' in the middle of a word - or give the census reference please Barbara?
Found it
RG11; Piece: 778; Folio: 12; Page: 18
The following page has it clearer as 'Pimm's'

There are still cottages called Pimms Cottages in Burpham, just trying to get my bearings it is in the right direction. I don't have maps on this computer

It's not the one in Burpham. It's Pimm's Cottages, Bright Hill, Guildford.

The census enumerator's walk was in parish of Holy Trinity, starting at South Street, then Sydenham Road, and house in Mr Pimm's garden to and including all the houses on Charlotteville Estate then Babington Place, Bright Hill etc...
ADDED: Shaun, you posted while I was typing ;D

Thanks josey I was trying to get back to the enumerators walk. I know Holy Trinity Church is at the top of the High Street

There's a mention of Pimm's Cottages in connection with the Robin Hood pub https://gummy44.wordpress.com/public-houses/
-
There is a good chance they are where the car park is then :'(
-
My great grandparents old home is under the new Coventry Cathedral!!
-
Was it bombed then :-\
-
The Robin Hood pub is still there -just. There is a planning application to demolish it and build flats.

Was it bombed then :-\
In case I added confusion I was referring to Josey's gt grandparents house in Coventry :)
Shame to hear that they are after building flats where the RH is, I would have thought houses were more in keeping with the area. Long time since I was in Guildford :(
-
Yes, rosie - the house in Coventry was in Freeth Street. http://www.thecoventrywehavelost.co.uk/streets-and-buildings/city-centre/
They moved from Ireland in the mid 1920s but my widowed gt grandmother had moved to Barras Lane by 1936.

I am pleased to hear she was no longer living in Freeth Street. Thank you for the link, I have printed it off to read ;D
