I am trying to find some details about a Swedish ancestor, Franz Edler. Not sure what parish he was in but have the christening records of his two children and these are for Stockholm. Mother's name does not come up when I search except for the christening records. Any ideas on how I could find marriage details gratefully accepted.
-
Hello and welcome to Rootschat.
Can you please give us what information you have already about your ancestor?
-
Hi and welcome to RootsChat.
I took a look in the Swedish books and found Frans and his family but no marriage as of yet.
This is from his birth record:
Frans Edvard Edler born 6 Dec 1814 in Skeppsholm Parish Stockholm.
Parents: Boatswain Gustaf Edler and Margaretha Catharina Westling.
Ian
-
They were married in Klara Parish in Stockholm on 4 June 1840.
Ian
-
Which country did he emigrate to?

Thank you for this information, it would seem to tie in nicely with the dates of children, especially Edward who ended up in Australia. Can you tell me where you found this information so that I am better informed for the future.
I am very grateful for your assistance and am quite excited to be looking at perhaps the next generation.
-
I am reasonably certain that Franz married Maria Louise Stenstrom and they had 2 sons. One seems to have come to Australia and the other, Carl to US. Edward was working on ships in Australia for some of the time and Franz is listed as a sea captain on Edwards death certificate.
-
Here is the family in Stockholm around 1850:
Frans Edvard Edler - born Stockholm 6 Dec 1814
Maria Lovisa Stenström - born Norrköping 10 Mar 1803
Gustaf Gottfried - born Stockholm 8 Dec 1832 (not Frans' child)
Edvard Emil - born Stockholm 13 Mar 1842
Carl Mauritz - born Stockholm 1 Jan 1847
I use ArkivDigital for these records.
Ian
-
Frans Edvard was recorded as a coopvaerdi styrman - Merchant officer in 1850.
Here is a record from the seaman's database from 1836 as a deckhand.
-
Edward Emil was recorded as an interpreter and an accountant. He was also written down as spending a year in the Svea Life Guard Regiment in Stockholm.
Ian
-
Frans Edvard Edler was an "under skeppare" in the Swedish Royal Navy. A "skeppare" was a captain of somewhat. I am no expert in this but I think he was the captains righthand man.
Ian
-
Thank you Ian this is fantastic information. I will now start looking for Maria Louise stenstrom, the wife of Franz
-
What would you like to know?
I have her birth record.
Do you want to look for yourself?
Ian
-
I would love to see it. Thank you.
-
Do these records cover all Swedish citizens?
-
Well, having looked again at the original she was actually born 3 feb 1803. She was recorded incorrectly in Stockholm.
Ian
-
Do these records cover all Swedish citizens?
Yes.
-
Frans Edvard was recorded at sea between 1852-1860 and then recorded as dead without a date. It looks as though he died at sea between these dates.
Ian
-
Found Frans Edvard's father Gustaf's Will/Inventory. He died 1 Jan 1828, 40 years old.
It lists all the beneficiaries including his children:
Casper Gustaf Edler born 6 Dec 1812
Christina Charlotta Edler born 2 Dec 1817
Bernhardina Edler born 22 Apr 1820
Catharina Lovisa Edler born 1 Mar 1824
Ian
-
But according to Gustaf Edler's death record he was found in the sea on 31 Dec 1827.
Ian
-
I found records of 2 of Gustaf and Margaretha's children Catharina and Bernhardina as being given up for adoption after the death of their father. These records can be found here:
http://digitalastadsarkivet.stockholm.se/Allmbarnhus/Allmbarnhusepi7.aspx
Just write Edler in "efternamn" and you will get 3 hits. Just download them.
The other one is Carl Mauritz who was also adopted in 1848.

Hi Ian
You have given me enormous assistance. Thank you. I would be very interested in any records you can send me. I will need to spend some time now trying to piece the story together.
Thanks
Carol
-
Cheers.
I have sent you a PM.
Ian
-
I have managed to trace most of the family members. If you need more just ask.
Ian
-
Also:
If you write Edler in "lastname" you will see Maria Lovisa and Christina (Kristina) Charlotta listed a number of times. These are census records from Stockholm between 1878-1926.

Hi Ian
Thank you so much for all your assistance. I am just starting to go through the data you have shared with me. I am busy doing some translating through google at the moment to make sense of the headings in the documents. Can you tell me how far back the Swedish records go? Is there a way of me accessing them on line as when I go into the site it only gives me the volume or microfische no but not much in the way of details. I have not been able to see any of the original documents before.
Your research has given me a gold mine of information, most of which I had been looking for over the last three years.
Hope you have a wonderful Easter celebration and thank you again.

Can you tell me how far back the Swedish records go?
Cheers Carol.
All parishes started at different times. In Skeppsholm Parish for example the marriage books started in 1712, the births started in 1714 and the "census books" started in 1770. So if the Edlers came from there then we should be able to get that far back...... hopefully!

I have the birth dates of Gustaf and Margaretha but no records as it doesn't state where they were born.
Gustaf Edler was born 1788 and Margaretha Catharina Westling born 4 Apr 1786.

Hi Ian I have been trying to research this family for some time, and it looks like you have a lot of information, I have been trying to find the birth place of Maria Lovisa Stenstrom parents, wondering if you have any info? Looking towards Norway.
Marilyn
-
Hi Marilyn
I have taken a wee look in the books for this family and found only 3 records. I'm pretty sure that Norway is not involved here.
It looks as though they were from Norrköping.
Here are 3 birth records to parents Lars Stenström and Stina Pehrsdotter:
Maria Lovisa 2 Feb 1803 in Norrköping

Lars Peter 7 May 1800 in Norrköping

Hi Ian
This is very interesting as I had established that Maria Louisa had come from Norrkoping but had not been able to find any relatives. This certainly would seem to fit with dates. In the 1855 census she was listed as a widow.
I am fairly sure she died in 1886.
Thank you for this.
Carol
-
Cheers.
Do you have the source for the 1855 census?
Ian
-
No worries, I remembered the images I sent to you a while back.
Ian
-
I am fairly sure she died in 1886.
Do you have any evidence of this?
Ian
-
Yes you are correct - 24 Oct 1886:
She was recorded in 2 parishes:
Skeppsholm:

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner Ian as I am travelling this week and have not always had access.
I was lucky enough to visit the Swedish archives a couple of years ago and they showed me her death record. I would love to know more about her family before her marriage. Now that you have opened up the names of her parents I will have to go searching again.
Regards
Carol

Hi Carol
I'll see what I can dig up.

Hi Ian

Hi Carol
Look's like we are family and chasing the same ancestor's
Marilyn
-
Hi Marilyn
It does look like we are family. I'm not sure whether it is second cousins or what but nice to have the connection.
Do you have any information or photos of Mary Ann Devine? I would like to know more about her as she seems like a very determined woman from the little I have been able to discover.
Carol
-
Hi Carol
I do have one photo of her with my mum's sister Violet, she was born before my Nan was married, Mary Anne brought her up. I will find the pic
-
That's wonderful Marilyn. I would love to see it.
Thank you

Oh Ian thank you so much. This really gives a vivid picture of how hard life was my relatives and how very little they had.
It is interesting to think how much we take for granted, especially at this time with the way life is at the moment where we are confined to our homes. It would have been unbearable in Lars' time.
Thank you again. This is just wonderful.
Carol
-
Cheers Carol
And I totally agree.
