I am related to Bridget (Brigia or Bella) Doody who married Henry Williams 29 Apr 1867 • Dist of Athy, Co of Kildare. Her mother was Catharine (nee?) Doody and father, Mathew Doody. She had a brother George. My direct ancestor is Mary Doody Coopersmith. I am not sure how Mary is related to Bridget and the rest, but I know she is, given that all lived together in the same flat in Brooklyn NY after arriving in the US. I am taking a trip to Ireland and would love to solve a few mysteries about the Doodys in my ancestry. And if anyone knows a living Doody in Athy I'd love to get in touch (PM me please). Thank you.

Welcome To Rootschat,
I'm afraid that we are not allowed to mention details of anyone who may be "living".
The best you can hope for is details of ancestors in Ireland, with the name Doody. This may give you a location that you can visit there and "on site" enquiries there may turn up living persons.
Good Luck

Thanks, Richard. I understand people living can't be shared abut publically but I thought a private message is ok. No?

After you have posted, I think it is over 3 messages, you can then receive PM's.
I have not searched for you yet, but I will see what I can find. Have you tried spelling variations of the name Doody (Doodey etc.)

There are only 16 people named DOODY on the 1901 Census in Co. Kildare - LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=1901&surname=doody&exact=&firstname=&county19011911=Kildare&county1821=&county1831=&county1841=&county1851=&townland=&ded=&age=&sex=&relationToHead=&religion=&education=&occupation=&marriageStatus=&marriageYears=&childrenBorn=&childrenLiving=&birthplace=&nativeCountry=&language=&deafdumb=&houseNumber=&familiesNumber=&malesNumber=&femalesNumber=&maleServNumber=&femaleServNumber=&estChurchNumber=&romanCatNumber=&presbNumberDiv=&protNumber=&parish=&barony=&yearsMarried=&causeOfDeath=&yearOfDeath=&familyId=&ageInMonths=&search=Search&sort=age&pageSize=100)
This number was even less in 1911
Have you researched the families in detail with years
From what I can see Bridget DOODY was born c1845 in possibly Co. Kildare or Co. Laois
Her mother Catherine DOODY was shown on the 1875 and 1880 Brooklyn Census with her
George DOODY was shown as 33 in 1875 implying he was born in 1842
There is a record of a baptism on Nov 27 1842 in Stradbally Co. Laois - LINK (http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634581#page/46/mode/1up)
Father Matthew DOODY and mother Catherine MOON (also transcribed as MOORE)
Although the age is out, he seems to have died in 1900 - LINK (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WFW-9BJ)
I cannot see more baptisms to this couple but there are more with the Father Matthew and Mother Catherine PHELAN
Margaret Jan 1839; Bridget Aug 1839, Maria 1848
Stradbally although in Co. Laois is just over the border from Kildare and not far from Athy to the west.
I didn't make the connection to Mary DOODY COPPERSMITH
In fact I can find little on anyone of this name
I can see she married Peter CAVANAGH and that he died c1887
She is on census returns up to 1920
I do not see a birth or arrival record for her
If you have anything else that might help someone here in Ireland make a connection especially in the more recent census returns you may more easily find relatives
Hope that this helps

Thank you so much. This does help a lot - mostly to confirm the information I've found. I have Mary Cavanagh's (nee Doody, Coopersmith) death cert and her parents are listed as John Doody and Mary White, and her birthday as March 30 1855. It's the 1875 US census that shows they're living with Bridget, Henry her husband, George Doody, and Bridget and George's mom Catherine.
Unfortunately I have no other information on them. I've searched and examined everything I can here and there's been no lead other than Bridget's marriage in Athy.
Could there be a baptismal record for Mary Doody in the COI records - to parents, John Doody/ Mary White? For that I'd need to know exact parish or even townland, right?
Thanks again!:-)

If Mary is shown as Doody Coppersmith perhaps she was married twice?
Especially as her father is shown as John DOODY
FYI LINK to death record (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WVJ-H5B)
Unfortunately Civil records are not available in 1855 and you are dependent on surviving records from other sources including churches and this again is dependent on knowing which parish to look in etc.

I went through all the cemetery records I have from Kildare, and only one Doody;
-
Newbridge cemetery;
Philip Doody; 30 O Higgins Tce Curragh Camp
23/6/1974 (1 year)
infant sister; 27/7/1970

I would presume the father was an Army man
