Hi all,
Hopefully someone out there will have some clues to a mystery.
I have a birth certificate for William Herbert Adams born 10th August 1896, in Glasgow His mother is Agnes Adams and his father is William Adams. They were married in Belfast in 1889. However this birth certificate has a marriage in India in 1877, this marriage cant be to Agnes as she would only have been about 4 years old. Later children have the correct marriage date on the birth certificates.
Any ideas about the India marriage?
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Have you found him in any census before 1899, what does that give as his occupation?

What I know is that William was born in Ireland in 1852, this is from census information. He married my great grandmother Agnes Adams <yes they have the same surname) - speculation In the family is that they may have been related, in 1889 in Belfast. As you know the mystery marriage is on their child's bc. The first two children are born in Belfast. The rest of the children in Glasgow. His work in Glasgow seems to be for the 'corporation'. Which I am assuming is the council. Works as a labourer and then as a labourer for the cleaning department. Also labourer for a mason. So all fairly low level work. I have tried various India website to pin point a marriage but no luck.
Thanks for all help so far

They were married in Belfast in 1889.
Lynda
Does the marriage certificate say he is a widow?

I do not have any marriage certificates. The bc give the marriage dates. One child has marriage date of 1877 India, mother is Agnes Adams, she would have been about 4 years old, so assume she is not the wife he married in 1877. Other children's bc give marriage as 1889 in Belfast.
Cannot find any marriage certificates for either India or Belfast.

It is certainly possible that William and Agnes were not married.

A strong possibility for Agnes' birth https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPN3-YW5
Potentially at least two other daughters, Jane and Mary, to same couple.
Would need further checking, but certainly a James Adams married a Jane Magill in Castlereagh district, Belfast on 23/11/1863.

Have you ruled out the William Adams, bc1854, death in 1910, under 'Glasgow City', that is on scotlandspeople?

On checking the link to An...... I see that there was about a 20year age difference between William Herbert's parents.
If as asked previously, his father had been in the army/working in India then maybe there was a previous marriage in India and for some reason that has been recorded on his birth certificate.
Maybe they were trying to cover up the fact that they were not actually married by giving the date of his previous marriage or the way the registrar recorded the information he was being given???
Just a thought.

RE: two marriages for William Adams , yes I think the explanation is that he was married in India to someone else but I can't find proof of that. This sis the marriage recorded as India, even though Agnes is the mother. Other children have the 1889 Belfast marriage. So a cover up or a slip up not sure.
1910 death in Glasgow I have looked at, this William Adams was a coalminer and married to a different person. Unless you have found a different death certificate to the one I found on Scotland people.
Thanks for all help so far

Re 1870 birth for Agnes, yes that is a string possibility I will investigate. Other information I have would suggest that she was born a later but I know ages on other documents can be very misleading
Thanks

Looking through soldiers' records, there's a possible circumstantial fit with a William Adams, labourer, born Killead, Antrim circa 1854. he joined the army in 1876 in Belfast and was transferred to the Reserve in 1888. He was discharged in 1892.
Father Robert, mother Margaret.
Belfast addresses in the 1888-92 period were 17 Belmont Street and 13 Lagan Village.
He served In Lucknow in 1878 and 1879.
No mention of a marriage.

That's really interesting about army and parents thank you. I know first names can run in families and his first daughter was called Margaret, my great aunt, who I have many fond memories of - she was a spinster, bit eccentric and really tiny!
