Title: David Dalrymple
Post by: margaret55 on Saturday 05 March 16 09:07 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone does anyone have a David Laing Dalrymple in their family tree. David was the son of John Dalrymple & Catherine Edgar Laing David was married to Nora Little she died in February 1979 David died in October 1996 Nora was my mothers half sister we always believed that she didnt have any children but on Davids death certificate it was his daughter who informed the registrar. she has signed D C Dalrymple there is another letter in front of the D but i cant make it out. I have searched scotlandspeople and cant find a birth for her.David & Nora married in 1946 at Caerlaverock they both died in Dumfriesshire so i assume the daughter was born there. If anyone out there can help solve this for me i will be grateful thankyou margaret55

Hi Margaret

Just adding the link to the previous post on the family for background here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=687396.0

A few ideas:

You can contact Scotlands People and ask for help with daughter's initial(s) if the writing is not clear. See www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=1210

You can also add a snippet with her name and people can try to help here with making it out with you. If you have problems with this, just let me know and I can help.

Was there an address on the death certificate for the daughter? You could try searching further on the address via electoral rolls (this have to be done in person/on your behalf as not available online).

What was David Laing Darlymple's parents' names? You might get some clues from naming pattern from their names if used in any way for the naming of daughter (there might be more than one child too).

Again, sadly a search that can only be done in person at a main genealogy centre or registrars, you can search for births using mother's maiden name for births from the very late 1920s I believe.

Monica  :)

ADDED: Sorry, see you added David's parents' names in your post.

Hi Margaret,

Do you suspect that this is David's daughter from a previous marriage/relationship?
Was David a bachelor when he and Nora married ?

daughters address is 29 Dunlop road Dumfries DG2 9JN
i know how to scan ono the computer but not sure how to put it on to a message board.Davids parents did have more than one child i got the 1911 census of scotlandspeople.

Hi looby i did think about that he might have been married before but still could not find any births for Dalrymple before 1946 and also on his death certificate his marital status is widowed Nora died before him and her name is the only spouse mentioned. margaret55

How annoying for you Margaret!!
The last 2 initials and the name Dalrymple are very clear. But that first initial is a squiggle.
I wondered if it was Mrs ?? But that would make her a daughter in law?

I certainly can't make out what it is  :-\ I thought it might be an H, but cannot see anything in births that would help with this.

Maybe asking SP for help from the original document image might help?

I  wished they had learned to write a lot clearer it would make life a lot easier for us to be able to trace them unless that was the idea. margaret55
