Hi there, I am just wondering if anyone has connections or knowledge of the Smalley family from Leverington, Cambridge UK. I am an ancestor and would like out more about my ancestral history and find relatives from the area.
-
If you haven't already done so, a good way to make surname connections with other members is to enter your surname interests in the Surname Interests Table (SIT), and to check there whether others are researching these names.
This can be found at http://surname.rootschat.com/ , there is a link to it under "Your Tools" at the bottom of each Rootschat page.
The more people who enter their surnames, the more chance there will be of making a connection!
If you are looking for information about specific family members, post their names (provided they are deceased), along with what you already know about them, and people here will gladly try to help you. ;)

Anyone else finding this difficult, I am having no luck, I'm finding it difficult to navigate the Surnames Interest Page, it would be better if the moderators could make the toolbar more illuminated, so that it's much more user friendly.

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.
Sorry you are finding the SIT search difficult, I think that this is the page you are after.

I see that you also want to find out about your Smalley ancestral history. Maybe if you give us some information as to what you are looking for to save us giving you details you already have. Rootschatters are volunteers and are happy to try and help.

My Great Great Grandfather's name was Thomas Henry Smalley and he was born at sea on 1 September 1851 on the way to the Ballarat Goldfields, Australia. I have a family tree that goes back to the Smalley Family- James Smalley, born in Leverington Cambridge England in 1805. I also have a relative by the name of Elizabeth McGrath who was a seamstress from Tipperary Ireland. I am looking to know what vocations the Smalleys and family used to have and learn a bit about their lives in Cambridge.

Jas Smalley 46 occ Labourer Born Newton, Cambridgeshire

The 1841 has them with children Mary 6, Harriett 2 and Sarah 2 months

It looks as though Harriett was buried at Leverington age 4 in 1842 (freereg)

That doesn't really make sense because all of their offspring were women meaning the line would have been lost in name from then on, unless they had an illegitimate child and were named after the mother - which knowing my own temperament would make sense as we are fairly independent women in our family and don't prioritize things like hetero normative societies. So perhaps we were just more independent and progressive than most.
-
I simply wouldn't of existed unless William Smalley was real, so I exist therefore there must be missing pieces to this puzzle.
-
Unless William Smalley was the product of a sole parent.
-
Sorry I don't understand. :-\
Who is William Smalley.
You say you are descended from Thomas Henry Smalley who was born Sept 1851 at sea father James bn c1805. I have given you the family that I presume were yours still in Cambridgeshire in March 1851. Presumably the family were on their way to Australia from Cambridgeshire in Sept 1851 when Thomas H was born.
Have you located James born 1805 birth and any possible siblings
-
Sorry I meant Thomas Henry Smalley and he was born at sea, a slight oversight as I am not familiar with my families history and got confused the information.
-
This is very bizzarre, I am brand new at researching history and have gotten the dates and names muddles up. Also I don't know what "c1805" means. It will take me a while to get my head around it.
Okay so anyway, James Smalley is the earliest relative we have documentation of, he was born in 1805, I'm not sure what relation he was to my Great Grandfather, only that they are apart of our family tree (I'll have to ask my second cousin for more information). Thomas Henry Smalley and he was born at sea on 1 September 1851.
-
c1805 means circa 1805 that is about 1805 ;)
From the information you gave in your post that was the nearest I came up with. It may be an idea to find out from your cousin how he found out who Thomas's father was before we try to go further with this. Do you have evidence of James, Martha and children all arriving in Ballarat.
-
I'm not sure I understand but I'll have to ask my cousin, who has been doing our history for a few years.

This might help clarify file:///Users/jasminmoret/Downloads/Smalley%20Family%20Tree%20(2).pdf

The link doesn't work.
Ancestry trees show the same parents as Rosie found in 1851 - the census was taken on 30 Mar 1851, so as Rosie said, presumably Martha was pregnant with Thomas Henry when they emigrated.
Cambs FHS has a baptism index 1801-37 at https://www.cfhs.org.uk/searchsd.cfm but there's no sign of James. He appears to have moved to Leverington from Newton. a mile away between 1833 and 1841
In common with the majority of the rural population he appears to have been a labourer, probably working on the land.
