RootsWeb Offline or down. It seems Ancestry are still having problems with their rootsweb servers they have been offline for about two days now.
An errors message from Rootsweb.com says:
We are experiencing some temporary Rootsweb site problems.
We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.
Our development and web operations teams are working on the problem and we will have it resolved as quickly as possible.
Thank-you for your patience.
I hope this is not a denial of service attack and that the Ancestry servers will not suffer from the same or similar problems
Cheers

I regularly use rootsweb to refer to the information on the Hugh Wallis site, to sort the chaff from the wheat on familysearch website, and it's been down for about two or three days. When I saw your post I nipped along to check if it was back online - no it isn't. :-\
-
See it's still down, must be a real big problem. :-\
-
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ is where to check.

"We're currently experiencing a temporary website outage due to Rootsweb hardware failure. Rest assured, our development and web operations teams are busy working to securely restore the site as quickly as possible. Our initial expectation is to have the site back up and running on or around March 15, 2016.
We apologize for the disruption and thank-you for your patience.
We will provide other updates here as we have them"
Hopefully back by St Patricks Day then.

That's a long time off, but I expect that their backups are absolutely massive which could take that long to restore them.

I am wondering what has happened as it is not simply one server that is down.
All the mailing lists worldwide (which are as far as I know hosted on a number of different servers) are down, the surname lists are down the freespace websites are down etc., etc..
It could be hardware such as the load sharing servers have failed but it seems something very unusual has taken place

PS the "world" servers seem to take you immediately to the error message as do the .com servers
The "intl" servers and the "index" just seem to hang without taking you anywhere
-
All I get when I try to access the site is 'this page can't be displayed'. ???
So thanks for the explanation.

Whilst the live Mailing Lists are down, it would appear that the List Archives are still available, if anyone needs them ...
eg:

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/YORKSGEN
(just change the list name)

I couldn't even get Ancestry to work yesterday. It kept timing out!

Some Rootsweb services have been restored but by no means all. It is a huge task ahead of them. Users may need to have a little more patience (or possibly a lot more ::) )
-
Must have been a significant hardware failure to cause such a long downtime. :-\ :-\
I have watched my son sort out hardware problems and restore the data, obviously on a much smaller scale, but it can take days to put back information, sync it up (whatever that is) and get the customer back on line. So with a site as big as Rootsweb we are going to have to just be patient, their technicians will get there...... ;)

Freepages seem to be back online now.
I have not checked to see if anything is missing but at least they are online again.
Cheers

My Freepages site has many pages. This morning I was able to look into every page but NO File Manager available.
Funny thing, yesterday I was visiting our daughter up in the country and was using my smart phone. Tried my Freepages and it was all there but only lasted a few minutes.
I am really missing my Site.
-
My Freepages Site is now back
But, something seems different. The detail on my File Manager page is different and seems to be about what it showed back in June 2015.
Every now & then, I take a screenshot of my files & folders as shown on my File Manager.
This morning the detail / the figures did not make sence. I also keep a daily record of page visits and today my visits recorder is showing the same figures of months ago.
Also recently I changed the color of some text on the pages and today its showing the old color.
If you added some new data recently, have a look to see if its still there.
But I'm pleased its back.

I got on to the surname message boards today by clicking on a link which came up in a Google search. It turned out to be an old message of my own. (After about 10 or so years, it still didnt have any replies though) 😄😄

I'm having the same problems with not being able to access the FreePages File Manager. I know it all went down a while back, I was patient and it came back and I was able to enter File Manager and access my webpage. Over the past week or so I have been trying to update it again, but I can't even get to the login page. I'm at a loss with what to do. I don't even know who to contact to help!!! Can anyone help me?
Kind regards
Jen.
