Hi,
How long does it take to dowload Windows 10, and are there any complications/problems etc, and is it worth it.
Peter.
-
Given that Microsoft are wanting all windows users weather they want it or not very little options to avoid the inevitable!
Free option to update to windows 10 from Vista/windows 8/8.1 ends July 2016.
Depending on your download speed, allow one and half hours to do the initial installation.
Updates to bring it to current, well how long is a piece of string!
Brian
[Watch out for current applications being deleted on installation of new operating system]

Hi
"Is it worth it?"
In my view? = "YES!"
Is it perfect? = By no means.
Is it worse than preceding? = Absolutely not
Will it run older versions of software products? = Quite a few which did not work in other versions
Is it worth it? = "YES" if you don't have to pay for it!
= "YES" if you do, my view.
Ray
Post-script =
I also installed the latest Linux version on a spare (old Win7) laptop
Bought/installed a cheap SSD (£30)
FREE Mint13 inc Firefox & Thunderbird & Libre Office = wonderful!
You can keep Rootschat running on the old one and answer the queries on your shiny new one
etc etc..
PPS = Don't throw that laptop away, try my post-script suggestion ?
PPPS = It may just be the old one I chose but it "seems just as fast as" the Win10/I7/16gb/1TBSSD
( the weakest point in the link is the internet connection !!!!!!!! )

It does take quite a long while for windows 10 to download, then upgrade, then update.
So start at a time you are not desperate to use your computer.
One tip... Before you start set your computer's 'sleep' option to never. That ensures the process happens and completes without interruption.
Also don't forget to back up all your data in case anything goes wrong.
I would definitely say it's worth upgrading to Windows 10.

I really like it and have less problems than with previous versions.

I'm happy with Windows 10.At first I had no sound when I updated the first day it was available, in just over a month I was able to get updated drivers. I found that my computer was n't shutting down properly prior on Windows 10 and updating to 10 solved it. There was a problem when I updated that I could n't play cds or DVDs despite having the DVD player which Windows gave me but now I've got music back and now even my data cd's of parish records are searchable and viewable and I'd resigned myself to looking at them on an old computer.
-
Well I have decided to give it a go, downloaded and installed yesterday took 8 hours and everything seems fine so far.
I may be asking for some more help and advice in the future, but a question now is can I still use ccleaner and malewarebytes.
Many thanks.
-
Back again, I have used Trusteer Rapport for a long time with Firefox but I cannot get it to download and install with this new windows 10, any hints please.

Ditto. ;D ;D

We have Trusteer on our pc, but I think we downloaded it when the pop up asking if you wanted it came up, when I went into our online bank - not as a direct download.
It's worth typing "Trusteer" into the search box (bottom left next to windows icon), incase it downloaded but didn't install.
I think Firefox updated a few days ago, maybe worth checking you have the up to date version.
Just a few tips!
Hope this helps.

I updated Windows 10 from Windows 7 a couple of weeks ago, and am gradually getting used to it.
But - Why does this message come up whenever you want to run a video eg, from a news page, or have a livefeed for results :
"Adobe Flash plugin has crashed".
I use Mozilla Firefox, and have done an update for it, as well as an update for Adobe flash player.
Any suggestions please?
Jean.
P.S. The same message came up when I first sent this message !

I've used Windows10 since it was released and like it, but I think it still has a few issues that need sorting out. The start panel suddenly refused to open about 3 weeks ago after an update, so I did a restore which brought it back for a few days, then it went again. Also Chrome wouldn't open. I searched online and found it was quite common, so tried several of the solutions, none of which worked. Other solutions looked too complicated, so I didn't dare try them. Then I found a forum where someone mentioned that they'd removed Dropbox and that fixed it, others backed him up. I tried that and it worked! Apparently there is conflict between some programmes, especially when they update, and Windows10.
-
Every time Windows 10 does an update it is a good idea to check your settings. Mine just restarted several 'background' apps I had previously turned off. I was in the middle of something yesterday when a message popped up saying something like "Look at the great new album we've created from your photos" . . . WHY? . . . I never asked them to ???
Generally, I find Windows 10 works best with every possible 'feature' disabled, then using third party software I know and trust.

I hesitate to tempt fate, but Flash seems to be working fine for me at present in Firefox on Windows 10, upgraded from 7 last year. So it would seem to be something specific to a particular computer.
As every system is different it's hard to say where the problem is but it might be Flash clashing with some other software that wants to use the same area of memory. Do you have any other programs running? Hope someone can provide more helpful information.
Mike.
-
"As every system is different it's hard to say where the problem is ....."
You are quite right there. But why did these things work in Windows 7 and not in Windows 10.
Windows 10 should be an upgrade not a downgrade.

I think the problem is that programs and software companies are trying to catch up with Windows 10, and Windows 10 is continually upgrading one step ahead!

Posssibly, but someone also told me that it may be that Windows wants you to use their own programs and so makes it difficult to run others.
-
Yes, that question is a hard one.
I have heard you don't need an anti virus program with Windows 10, but if we don't it's a bit like putting 'all your eggs in one basket'. Websites keep asking for 'flash player' to display properly. I use and prefer Firefox to Edge, but there are so many different options it's no wonder there are conflicts.
I have never used an Apple PC (due to the cost).- Do you have these sort of problems with them, or is it more of a c
'Complete Package'?

I have been using for couple days or so now and doing various things, but yesterday after doing things I now have a box that comes up on start up requesting Outlook name and password when it just use to be the desktop, if anyone knows how I can get this back to how it was I will be grateful, have tried a few things with no success.
Many thanks.

I have not yet had the W10 upgrade which apparently should have come my way as I'm on W8.1 However my son had a look at my laptop and said there are a load of upgrades which have failed, and advised me to do a factory reset. Will I have to copy my programs to an external hard drive? Will my files be ok ? Can I perform 'drop and drag' to achieve this?
(Contemplating the purchase of a 'W10 ready' laptop when I can afford it)
Any advice would be appreciated.

We obviously don't know what you did to cause this, but it sounds like Windows 10 has created a user account with that name and expects you to sign in with name and password. This allows Windows to automatically connect and synchronise your email, etc.
You should be able to change this in the User Accounts section, in Settings.
Never be surprised when Windows 10 changes your settings after an update ::)

Carolli,
I've never actually done it but I think you may need to refresh rather than reset, this should preserve all your apps and data. There is a guide here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc
I would definitely copy all data files to a backup drive, just for safety, even if you don't refresh or reset. And, yes, you can drag and drop files from your internal hard drive to an external one. Make sure to "eject" the external drive before you disconnect it. Just pulling the USB plug can sometimes cause corrupted files, if they were not properly closed first.

AOL
AOL is email address but one can use T/bird for example as a Program to get Mail!
-
Often if you have a lot of failed updates it works to tick a few to download, let them and then restart, then download some more etc. If you do a reset, you will have loads! That is because Windows has to update from the reset point, and get up to date. I would try this method before I do a reset.

It should tell you what updates are available to download!

Before the upgrade for Windows 10, your pc needs to be ready. Therefore try and do any failed updates first, then I think you will find the files for Windows 10 will download. The upgrade itself takes a long time, with the screen going blank and restarting several times. It will then update the new Windows 10 to the current version.
I have upgraded four pc's in the family now to Windows 10, and patience is needed - it is a very big update.
Also if you do not have unlimited broadband be sure that 3GB won't take you over your monthly limits.

..or go to a Pub that has Wifi!!

Just downloaded the upgraded W10 onto my Linx tablet today. No problems so far.
-
I didn't reserve Win10 and yesterday I got a box up to the effect that files were being prepared for Win10...I closed it and went out...when I came back I noticed that my computer was running very slow...this morning I left my computer for a while and when I returned it was upgrading...It only took about an hour and a half so I think the files had been prepared some time yesterday whilst I was out.
I'm not happy that It upgraded without without me reserving it but hey ho...it's done now and I will find my way around the new set up. The good thing is that I know where to come if I encounter any problems....hoping that all my software is compatible.

That happened to me this morning Carol computer shut down then restarted and it was starting to download windows 10 ...Quickly put it off not sure about this windows 10 ?heard so many bad reports
Rosie
-
I am a bit miffed Rosie as I didn't want it and that choice was taken away...but it's done now and I can't do anything about it and you can't be at your PC all the time...so if you leave it unattended...it can creep in without your knowledge...but I have to say that my PC is running a lot quicker now. I advise you close down your computer when you are not using it.
Carol

Yes will do Carol I don't like changes will stay with my windows 7

Some day all Windows machines will be running the last version of Windows 10.
The above is to be continually updated.
[Your computer will search/download for Windows 10 even if your computer has been off a month!] :o

... Your computer will search/download for Windows 10 even if your computer has been off a month! ...
Indeed it will, and take about a month doing it . . . well, ok, several hours during which time the computer is almost completely useless >:(
I have an old Windows 7 laptop which I use very little. Switching on after a week or so I found it was very slow so I checked the resource monitor which showed 98-100% CPU time devoted to Windows Update services. Having discovered that cancelling only meant that it started again . . . from the beginning, I left it to play with itself and went to bed. On checking the Windows log in the morning I found it had finally finished around 1-30am, and it told me there were updates ready to download, so after all that time it hadn't even downloaded them apparently :-\
I daresay the MS terms and conditions allow them to update/upgrade your system so I assume, like Brian, we'll all eventually have Windows 10 whether or not we asked for it. I actually rather like it once I've disabled all the 'special features' but I sometimes wonder if even that will be overridden in the future and we'll be forced to use Edge, Mail, Cortana, etc. When that day comes I will most likely switch permanently to Linux 8)

I've been using Windows10 for several months and haven't had any real problems that I couldn't sort, and I'm not that computer literate.
Reading that link from Calverley Lad, it does look as if you have to actively take steps to stop it downloading. I feel sorry for anyone who uses a dongles or has limited data download as it uses quite a lot.

Yes it will just start downloading again each time one uses PC.. if one hasn't got good Wifi then just go to Pub or Cafe and download it there!! I think it is 6 GB...
-
As I recall from initial installation the then download total was 3Gb and took 2hrs to download and install on a 50Mb download system.
So work it out for yourselves, 2hrs on 50Mb,4hrs on 25Mb etc :o
No good setting it off overnight as your computer has to be rebooted a couple of times.
I wouldn't even hazard a guess what the total download is now, when you add on the subsequent updates?
Ah well back under my stone with my tin foil hat to avoid the despair from new users to Windows 10 ::)
Brian
-
Thanks for the advice folks. I'll take a look when I have time, and report back ;)
-
I think you may find that you computer is ONLY downloading the files for windows 10, that it will hold.
I do not think it will upgrade to windows 10 without you knowledge, or giving certain option (ie to back up files etc).
You should find you do not need to upgrade. Also in the early upgrade versions there was the option to roll back to windows 7/8 during the first 30 days. I'm not sure if it's still the same.

Does it depend what browser you are using? Mine didn't work for a while but then came back in time for Christmas! I'm using Chrome.

Aw thanks Jan....will sort it!

Just checked my updates. There were 60 updates waiting so decided to give it a try......20 successful; 40 failed. I may back everything up this weekend and try a refresh, then if necessary a reset.
-
When you get failed updates restart and try again. It really does work!
-
Thanks C_W
-
Yes 60 are too many for it to cope with, some need to fully install before others are accepted. It may take several attempts!

One of the better things about Windows 10 is that it's pretty good at sorting itself out and correcting errors, given time. Of course you may not always like the way it does it, but at least on the Pro version you can change back the settings after it has restored the defaults. Not sure if the Home edition is quite so accommodating :-\
When I first upgraded I was disappointed with the quality of the display, but within an hour or so it had downloaded new drivers for the video card and everything was back to the way it had been on Windows 7 :)
-
I have recently upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7, all has gone very well and I
must say that I am very please with it.
I just have the one small but really annoying problem with it, when I use I.E the
screen changes to a solid black in the centre of a page
but still shows the details/controls and the top and bottom of the page, also
the cursor arrow/hour glass pauses with a flicker.
I know there is Microsoft Edge browser to be used and also note that the problem is
not there when using Microsoft Edge, Just with I.E and it is so annoying every time you
move around the screen.
Would any one else had this problem when upgrading to Win 10, and know
of a fix for it as I would like to use Internet Explorer all the time.
Many thanks.
Peter.
-
I'm not 100% sure on this, but I don't think Internet Explorer works in Windows 10, in fact I think Edge was designed to replace I.E.in windows 10.
I use Firefox myself, as when windows 10 first came out Edge had a few problems with some sites, but I expect they are fixed now.

IE is still a part of Windows 10 although the new default browser is Edge - IE version 11 should be there alongside Edge and should work just as before.

It's well hidden ::)
Go to the search box (Cortana) and type Internet Explorer
This should bring up the desktop "app" which you can pin to the start menu or pin to the taskbar (or both)

Maybe you can Google I.E. and download the most recent version.

There should still be a search function either a lighter toned box or a magnifying glass on the task bar - click on that and type in "Internet Explorer" - Cortana is the "flashier" version of search and introduces voice search but it isn't necessary. (The search function may be hidden - if so right click on the task bar and select search)

Yes it can take a little work finding updates for drivers etc for non MS stuff.. as you say, easy when you know how!
