Title: Brooks
Post by: Jeune on Monday 18 July 05 08:45 BST (UK)
Would you be so kind as to look up Alfred Brooks born at Newick, Sussex who was aged 34 on the 1871 Census.  He was married to Elizabeth who was born at Chailey, Sussex and was aged 33 on the 1871 Census.  Sorry I don't have her maiden name.

Merci beaucoup.  I was hoping to find Alfred and Elizabeth prior to 1871 as I note that Alfred was born in Newick approx 1837 and Elizabeth in Chailey approx 1838.  Is there an 1861 Census which you could look up, please.  They were probably married about 1857-62.

Hello Jeune,

This looks like Alfred in the 1851 census:

HO107  1643   Folio 195   Sch 57   Newick

Christian Brooks, head, widow, 40, Nurse washerwoman etc, born Fletching
Ellen, dau, unmarried, 19, born Newick
William, son, unm, 17, Ag Lab, born Newick
Alfred, son, unm, 14, Grocershop Porter, born Newick
Charles, son, unm, 10, Ag Lab, born Newick
Amos, son, unm, 7, Scholar, born Newick
Henry, son, unm, 5, born Newick

This has been taken from the index compiled by June Barnes (vol 21) in book form, but I believe that Alfred's mother's name may be Christine (nee Roser) as I have found the following marriage on the SMI.

Lewes St John sub Castro
2 May 1831
Edward Brooks
Christine Roser
botp

On the GRO index, there is the following:
Deaths; June quarter 1847
Lewes &c 7 299
Edward Brooks

Alfred's wife may be Elizabeth Chatfield, who is in the 1851 census in Chailey Village, age 14, house servant, born Chailey, in the household of John Cornwell. This would explain the Henry Chatfield in Arranroot's 1861 post.
The IGI has a marriage that has been submitted by an LDS Church member for 28 July 1860, at St Nicholas, Brighton. Although I wouldn't necessarily trust this, the GRO index has entries for both Alfred Brooks and Elizabeth Chatsfield in Marriages, Sept quarter 1860, Brighton 2b 280.

Hope that's of some help.

Regards
Phil

Thank you so much, Arranroots and Forester.  This is so exciting!!  The son of Alfred and Elizabeth was christened at St Nicholas, Brighton so there's another connection.  Thanks again.

Jeune,

There are a lot of Chatfields in the Chailey/Newick area in 1851, but the most likely contenders for Elizabeth's parents are William and Susan. I can give you the details if you want them (tomorrow-I'm dropping now).

As both families look fairly settled, if you ask for an 1841 census look-up, you should get a better idea on Alfred and Elizabeth's parents.
I'm afraid I don't have the 1841 census myself.

Good luck,
Phil

Thank you Phil, you have been enormously helpful.  I will do as you suggest and request a lookup for the 1841 Census.  Thanks again.

Thank you so much, Chris and Phil.  This is really fascinating.  It appears that Elizabeth is the daughter of William who must have shared a home with his brother Thomas but I wonder where Elizabeth was in 1851 when she would have been only about 13 or 14.  'Tis a puzzlement!  My kind regards to you both.

Hello Jeune,

The answer to your question is buried about three-quarters of the way down in my first post.
That will teach me to break them down, instead of getting carried away.

Thank you Phil, on re-reading your post, I see that Elizabeth aged 14 was a servant and therefore counted in the Cornwell household.  Cheers, Jeune
