Hi Catherine
Hope I haven't asked you this before.
I'm trying to trace my fathers family.
They are from Dublin and the period I'm looking at is 1900-1925.
The name is Dobbins. My father, and his mum, dad and brothers lived at the rear of 14 Warrington Place, and their grandparents lived in an adjacent 'cul-de-sac' called Powerscourt. My fathers family later moved to Fenian St, just off Westland Row ( about 1930'ish)
The grandparents are the main target.
Have you anything that could cover this period and trace them ?
Jard

Hello Catherine,
Wonder if you could look on the 1851 Directory, for Dublin for me, for a Richard Knowles.
Richards daughter Bridget Agnes Knowles b. 1864 in Dublin married my great grandfather in Salford Lancashire in 1883, on the marriage certificate she has her father as Richard Knowles his Occupation a Tailor - Bridgets occupation was a tailoress - she also had a sister living in Salford, Lancashire called Mary A. Knowles she was born in Dublin in 1849.
At present I have been unable to find anything out about them.
Would be grateful, if you could see if Richard is in the directory for me.
Thank You
From one Catherine to another :)

Hello Catherine,
Welcome to RootsChat !!
What a wealth of information you have, I am sure some of our rootschatter's will be going "week at the knees" with excitement as we often struggle with information on Ireland.
Best Regards
RootsChat ;D
-
Hi Catherine
I'll certainly try St Andrews for info, thanks for the tip.
It would be helpful if you do find something, but I appreciate your time regardless.
My grandparents lived in Powerscourt, but it was not the main area. This was a small backstreet behind Warrington place.
I was last there about three years ago and it now has one of the 'Dobbins' wine restaurants in it (no relations unfortunately), but apart from that, very little else of any significance.
Anything that comes up with the name 'Dobbins or Dobbyns' would be interesting.
Thanks again
Jard

Hi Catherine thank You for lookup Offer.
Catherine I am trying to find a marriage for a JOhn O'Reilly and a Rosanna McQuirk or McGuirk. The only thing I know on them is that they had a son Patrick O'Reilly born Nov 1, 1887 in Dublin Ireland. I cannot find anything on his parents. Can you help me?

Dear Catherine
My great grandfather had a half-brother called Thomas Abraham Marten. Based on census information in Liverpool (where he grew up) it would appear that Thomas was born in Dublin about 1866. Thomas's birth may be registered in either the name Rowley or Marten, his mother being Elizabeth Rowley who later married his adoptive father James Marten. James Marten was a mariner, which could explain why the family where in Dublin, although I cannot be sure that the family were all together at this time i.e. as Thomas was illegitimate, Elizabeth may have been "sent" to Dublin (perhaps to relatives) for the birth. I do not know the details of Thomas's biological father. If you could offer any help at all in solving this mystery I would be very grateful.
Regards
Lesley

Dear Catherine,
I just can't get started with my Irish relatives. My great-grandfather had a dairy business in (I think) Meath St., his name was Thomas Phillips, his wife may have been Margaret. They had two children that I know of, my grandmother Ellen and her younger brother Michael who ran away to America about the turn of the century, 1900. My grandmother was born about Nov. 1880, if she had any other siblings I don't know of them. The address I have for the Phillips family is 26, Chamber Street, Dublin, which my brother swears is the place my mother was born, but I have never heard of that fact.
If you could find out anything at all I would be forever grateful.
Sincerely,
Mo C.

Hi Catherine,
My great-grandparents came from Ballina in County Mayo - I would love to be able to get the reference for their marriage so that I can order the certificate from Dublin GRO. Their names were John Hughes and Catherine Connell - their first son Edward was born 19 December 1923. I think they probably married about 1922, but it could have been earlier, or it could have been early 1923. Unfortunately I don't know their parents' names, but John was born about 1893 I think (he was 56 when he died in 1950) and Catherine was born about 1897 (aged about 38 when she died of double pneumonia in April 1935) - by the way both died in Burnley, Lancashire.
It would be of enormous importance to me to get their marriage certificate so I could see who their fathers were, so perhaps if you are there on any other business and have time, if you could have a look I would be very grateful. I am not sure, but they may have come from Attymass or Achy in Ballina.
I can't wait to get over there and see where they lived - it looks so beautiful from the photographs!
thanks
MrsLizzy :)

Hi Catherine
The CHurch of the Latter Day Saints indexed the births marriages and deaths registered from 1864 to 1867 so this birth should be in the IGI.
However there was a substantial level of non compliance in registering in the early years, estimated around 20% so don't count your chickens.
More Irish info on my website.

Hi Catherine,
thanks for the offer to look Dublin related things up. I wonder whether there is anything that you can do with this?
There is not a lot to go on, but this is what I have:
George KANE, who appears to have been born in Dublin in about 1846, was my gg grandfather. He was married in Liverpool in 1867, so was certainly living over here by that time.
His father was called Cornelius KANE and was a whipmaker. I'm afraid I don't have any more information than that, but I wonder whether you wouldn't mind checking what you have to see whether anything pops up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

Hello Catherine,
I wonder if you could help me?
My great grandmother, Teresa Carroll, was born in Kingstown, Dublin, 7th March 1879. From the LDS site, I have just found out that she had at least two brothers, born 1877 and 1880, both Dublin.
I have her birth certificate, marriage and death (she came over to the UK and is on the 1901 census, she married and died over here too).
What I am trying to find out is more about her parents, Martin Carroll and Mary White. I am presuming they married in Dublin but I really don't know where to start?
I cannot find either of them on any censuses (I know the Irish earlier ones were destroyed).
Hoping you can help me,
With very best wishes,
Julie in Portsmouth.
-
Hi Julie,
If you can get to an LDS family history centre, they should have the marriage index on microfiche where you can look for Martin CARROLL and Mary WHITE being married in Dublin in the same quarter and the same index reference.
www.hi5holidays.com/famhist.html
has more explanation

Thanks Kate.

Hi Kate
I wondered if you could help me find more information about a family member, Samuel SANDERS, who was stationed in Ireland in 1911 to 1914. He was then sent to France and subsequently discharged into the reserves. He was recalled in approx 1920 and was again in Ireland, this time in Dublin.
After his discharge in approx 1923 he stayed in Ireland in the Dublin area. At one time he was a steward of "The New Era Club", I think it was in Eldon Street, Dublin. In the late 1920s, early 1930s he owned "Bolton Cycle and Radio Stores" at 35 Bolton Street, Dublin.
Could you advise me how to find his family?
-
Catherine
I was very interested to read the HOWARD information posted by you - many thanks.
I am new to Rootschat and am having difficulty finding my way around. I would like to know if someone requested HOWARD info - can't find any such message. I would very much like to contact anyone interested in the family of Francis J HOWARD.

The MUNSON O'CALLAGHAN marriage should be registered if it was in 1897 or thereabouts. Have you tried the indexes held at your local family history centre? They are also available to search in the General Registry office in Dublin.

His name is peter Conway and he died in 1980;s I am currently doing a family history search class, so it would be nice to pull everything together. Many thanks. I will also be trying to find his father and mother's death cert. at a later stage, any ideas or suggestions would be welcome
-
Hi,
The only crematorium in Ireland is in Glasnevin in Dublin so he must have been cremated there. There ae probably crematoria in Northern Ireland too. I have sent you a PM.
thanks
Kate
-
Kate. That's right. I would love to receive anything you may have on the Timmons etc. Thanks very much.
-
Hi,
Wouldn't you start looking for the birth registration of Joseph from the Dublin GRO or at your local family history centre? Do you have his death cert from the same place? Same for Marriane's as this would give you her mother's maiden name.
If Henry was from Yorkshire, look for his in freebmd.
They should all in the 1901 and 1911 census, worth checking for the pub and at any address from certificates.
Hope this helps
Kate (the one with the ideas, not the directories!)
-
Hi Kated
I wonder if you can help me i am trying to trace my irish ancestors my Grandad was Michael Leeson born 1912 son of Thomas and Elizabeth he also had brothers and sisters named Kathleen, Annie, Phylis, Phillip and Joseph, born in Dublin i think i am new to this and really stuck dont know where to start in Ireland.
Regards
Linda
-
Hi,
If you don't have his birth certificate already, being born in 1912, the place to start is the birth indexes which are in the Dublin GRO and should also be available in your local family history centre. This will give you his parents name and address. You can search for the siblings too, once you know if it is Dublin North or South District and then you can look on the census for 1911 for that address.
This is available in the National Archives in Dublin. There's very little online. Check my website for resources.
Good Luck
Kate

Dear Kate. I would be extremely grateful if you should ever come across any references to the COLBERT surname in Ireland to pass this information onto me. I am pursuing a one name study for this name and many of my contacts (including myself) have Irish history.

Hi
Kated here. There is a Charles Smyth in the Shaws 1850 directory
Charles F., 7 Stephen's green North (Esq.)
http://www.loughman.dna.ie/dublin1850/xdubdir79.html#Smyth
There are lots of SMYTHs but no Charles to be found in Dublinor Wicklow in the Griffiths that I can see.
I presume that with a name like SMYTH, he was Anglican? So check for Charles marriage in the indexes.
Hope this helps

Hi Donna,
The Coombe is the name of the maternity hospital on the south side of Dublin. His birth should have been registered in the Dublin South district. Did the GRO check all possible spellings of his name? He may have been registered late. Also I think the Family history centres have some copies of the Coombe birth records that could be worth checkings.

Hi Kate,
I am not having much success finding any info on the Irish side of my family.
My parents, Rupert F. Dunham and Marion Charlotte Eager married at Stephens Green ?? Church, Dublin Jan 3, 1948. Her parents were Thomas Edward Eager (4 Priestfield, Dolphins Barn d. March 03, 1934) and Annie E. Barnaby (Hannaville Pk. Terenure, Dublin, Ireland), her siblings were Thomas F.B. , Robert, and Harriet. All I know is that her father was a 'cycle mechanic' and had a race drivers school and that one of the brothers was RAF and lived in Durban, South Africa. My mother died in 1955.
What resources and direction can you suggest?
Thank you in advance.
Cheers,

I am trying to trace my ggg grandfather's family. John Murphy, married Elizabeth O'Hara. They had at least one child, my own ggg grandfather, also named John Murphy, born approx 1822. The family moved to Australia in 1835, when young John was approx 13. I have nothing to go on except for these few names and datesand that they family came from Dublin. I know this may be a stretch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks Debra

Hi Kate,
Would be grateful for a look up in Griffiths Eval.
Not sure of first name, could be either William or Hugh Paterson, (wife Joanna) a farmer somewhere in Co. Armargh. Also a Robert (wife Mary) McMillan also a farmer, believed to be Co. Armargh. Anything at all on these two families would be a big breakthrough for me.
Thanks for any help you can give
Liz
-
Hi Liz,
You should post thison the Armagh board! I can see no Paterson nor McMillan in the Griffiths Valuation which in Armagh was taken in 1864. Though another sources references 3 Patersons somewhere in Armagh.
Sorry Kated
-
Hi Kate,
Thank you for trying, I thought the griffiths valuation may have been a bit late for these families. I know the Paterson were in Co. Armagh, but William/Hugh possibly died long before then.
Thanks again
Liz
-
Hi Kate!
I haven't got much information for you to go on, but
I was wondering if you would be kind enough to have
a look for the family of Cornelius Spain.
All I know is that he had a son who was also called
Cornelius and who (according to the 1851 census)
was born in Dublin in about 1817. This Cornelius
married in Derbyshire in 1838 and at that time he
gave his father's occupation as being a silk mercer.
Anything you can find out would be a great help, as
I've only just found out about my Irish ancestors and
don't really know what records are available or the
best way to go about tracing them.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Ju
-
Hi Ju,
I would look first for the Spain surname in the Griffiths valuation and then in Dublin directories. Check my website for some useful links.

Hi Kate,
I have my parents birth, marriage and death certs. I would like to find info on my grandparents or their other children.
In my first post, I mentioned all that I know, as my mother died when I was so young, and there was no correspondence with her family after that. I have no family stories that I heard. So looking at records and hopefully finding some extended relations will fill in the huge gaps!
Cheers,

Hi Catherine.... what a fantastic offer.
I have hit a very big brick wall so am not even going to be specific. ANY info on any CROWDER would be great.
I have a William CROWDER, (married to Hannah PARKER dob abt 1811 Ireland) in the 1851 census in Macclesfield, Cheshire gave his place of birth as Ireland (prob abt 1806). There were a few other CROWDER families in Macc. at that time with all the older members of the families giving their place of birth as Dublin
That is the total amount of info I have apart from his occipation which was weaver.
any suggestions would be appreciated!!!
Thanks
-
Sarah,
I bet that the name started out as Crowther and was transcribed in 1851 as
Crowder for reasons of accent both Irish and Macclesfield. There are 3
Crowther families in Dublin 1850 directory
Charles, 9 Prince William Terrace (coach maker)
Elizabeth, 101 Townsend St (toy warehouse)-spelt Crothers in street listing
Thomas, 1 Prince William terrace, Grand Canal St (ship agent)-spelt Crothers
in general listing
Did any other later census or certificate give a better address?
Kate
-
Thanks for that Kate (that's my daughter's name also) I had been told that the name might be Crouder in the US as fo some reason the CROWDER name needed to be hidden??!
I think I had better give you all I know then we can go from there.

I have searched through the 1841 Census literally person by person but they are not here then.
As I said there are several CROWDER families in Macc at that time (almost died out/moved on now). The spelling of the name is consistant.
Many thanks for getting this far. Any help is much appreciated!!

I had maybe better mention that I have found CROWDER's in the IGI for Macclesfield and within 5 miles of Macc in every century back to the 1500's.

Kate, this is the info I have and I am not even sure if my family was from Dublin. Know they were from Ireland and family says Co. Cork but I figure it doesn't hurt to look Everywhere when given a chance to. Mary/Maria J. Salmon (b) 1804-1816 (m) either a Dwyer Or a John Jenkins about 1832/33 as her first child was (b) ca. 1833/34. This child went by Jenkins but may have been Her son by Dwyer. She is listed on all records in U.S. as a Dwyer Except on the church burial records it says "Born Salmon" so I now know she had to have been (m) to a Dwyer before she (m) Jenkins. The second child was 5 years younger then the first , that is why I think the first was hers by Dwyer. When she (m) Jenkins she may have (m) him as Dwyer or Salmon. If the first child was Dwyer's and the second Jenkins' then she (m) Jenkins ca. 1837/38 and Dwyer Ca. 1832/33. John Jenkins (b) 1797-1817 was the husband she came with to U.S. during potato famine with kids John, Charles, Ralph and maybe Eliza A.(Alice?) (That is Eliza, Not Elizabeth) All kids (b) 1832 to 1843 , with Eliza being the youngest and maybe (b) after they left Ire. They may have come via Canada and were In U.S. for the 1850 census so the only census that would help is 1841. Maybe you can find Something about the marriages or kids births? Anything would help as I am at a brick wall to high to climb here. Thank You very much in advance even if you can't find anything. Leagen

Hi Catherine
I'm an Aussie looking for ancestors in Ireland. My gggrandfather Joseph Huband Smith was a barrister, his wife Catherine Cecilia (nee Jephson) - I have two addresses for them, 2 Holles St (maybe 1820s/30s) and Howth, later. They married in 1835 and may have been associated with the parish of St Nicholas Without.
My g-grandfather Edmund H S was born in 1837. I am very keen to find out about any siblings he may have had, and also death details for Joseph and Catherine. He died c. 1882, she died later.
Maybe with the 1851 directory and parish records you could find something for me. I'd be eternally grateful! It's difficult doing this from the other side of the world!

Hi Catherine,
I'm looking for Joseph Haddock born between 1872/73/74 in Kidderminster,Worcestershire,
England. On the 1901 census he is not with the rest of the family. Through old family members
i've been told he went to Ireland, and he was a teacher, another is a Professor at Dublin
University?? If you could have a look to see if you could find this person i would be very grateful.
Many Thanks,

Hi Kate
Thanks for the offer
I am looking for Eliza Gordon and Thomas Kearney both born Dublin. I am unsure of their dates of birth as later information on ages is conflicting. Their first child Elizabeth was born 1858/9 and the second Christopher 1860/61.
Any information greatly appreciated

Hi Catherine,
My g grandfather was Joseph Synnott & he married Mary Lightholder. In the early 1900s they lived on Lower Sheriff Street in the North Wall area of Dublin and they attended Mass at Saint Laurence O'Toole's Catholic Church at 49 Seville Place. Their children were Stephen, John, William (my grandfather), Joseph (Josie), Edward (Ned), Mary (she married Edward McEntee), and Thomas. The children attended school at O'Toole's and the boys played football for O'Toole's during the 1920s. John, William, & Thomas came to the United States.
There was a store across the street from O'Toole's that was owned by John Synnott. He was my grandfather's cousin & the boys also played football.
I have tried several options without success and I cannot begin my search without more info on my g grandfaather.
All I know about him is written above.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanking you in advance.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi,
If you know their probable address in 1901 and 1911, look them up on the census. This is available in the National Archives in Dublin. From this you will get ages and county of birth and on the 1911, years married and number of years married.

Family Home Library Road (no number) , Dun Laoghaire , Dublin.Children Larry , Ellen , Laurence .
Michael died 13th August 1933 and is buried at Deans grange Cemetery (i think). He also served with the Connaught Rangers and served in the Boer War.Any info would be Great.Kev.
-
Hi,
Do you have his death certificate? This should show his age and who was present at death amongst other things. Then you can work out his year of birth and search for that in the birth indexes available at the Dublin GRO and for some years on folm at your local family history centre. They also have marriage indexes.
There's also the 1911 census to check for that addess if you think they were there that long.
Kate
-
Hi Kate ,
I don't have any documents at the moment as i live in England , might have to try and make a trip over to source birth/Death certs , unless you can suggest any other coarse of action.Kev.

Hi Catherine
I have paperwork that puts my great great grandfather as being born circa 1809 the son of Mary and John Doyle who resided at 10 Ormond Market, in the Parish of St Michans., the papers note that this family had lived in the parish for over a century. He had brothers Patrick and John that I know for sure as they were petitioners on his convict papers. He was transported on the Cambridge in 1827. He stole goods from Messrs A Robertson Jewellers.
Do you have any registers that would cover Ormond Market between 1790 and 1820's? The names Peter, John, Michael, Edward, George, Ellen, Mary Anne and Amelia Jane (although common names)were used extensively down all the lines of Michael Doyles children. I live in Australia and so dont get to view many resources.
Any ideas greatfully accepted

HIya
I wonder if you can help me - kind of hit a brick wall online - new to this and not sure where to look from here.
I am trying to trace my grandfather's parents - surname McCarthy.
My Grandfather was born at Coombe Hospital Dublin 20 March 1924 and the birth was registered in district No3 5th city on 3 April 1924. Unfortunately they didn't register a name for him but it was Joseph Michael or Michael Joseph - not too sure.
Their names were Bernard McCarthy and Bridget (nee Masterson) address on the birth cert is minnowbrook lodge terenure.
Bernard was a labourer at the lodge - is there any way of finding more about them (marriage, death) or the history of minnow brook lodge - he was a labourer there - the lodge was owned by Patrick Ryan.
Any advice or help would be appreciated - stuck in the UK and I understand the records can't be viewed online
Many thanks :D
-
Hi,
I can think of two things you coulddo. 1. Search the parish records for his baptism. You would have to contact the priest at terenure for that. 2. Search for his parents marriage in the marriage indexes. These are available at the GRO in Dublin or on film at your local family history centre.
Actually I've just thought of a third option. Check the Dublin dorectories for 1924 for the lodge address. The only places I know these directories are though is in the various archives in Dublin.
Kate

Hi Marie from Aussi :)
It looks like I found your Ancestor:
In the 1850 Directory:
Smith J.Huband, seneschal of Manors of Glenarm Oldstone and Ballycastle also Dunlunce.
He was a Barrister, at 2 Hollis Street, He was admitted to the Bar at Easter1828,
If you think this is a match, I will send you information on the places mentioned.
Regards Catherine
-
Hi Catherine! :)
Yes, that is certainly my g-g-grandfather! Any info you can send me about what you have found will be warmly welcomed!
I don't understand that bit about seneschal of manors etc... Are you able to explain that a bit? It's terminology that is foreign to us Aussies!
No reference to his family (children), I suppose? (She says hopefully - I'm sure the answer will be no, but one can always hope!)
Thanks a lot - I really appreciate this!
Marie
-
Hi
Would he have been admitted to the Kings Inn? There is a book with genealogical details of all
Kings Inn Admission Papers
Kate
-
Yes, Kate! :)
Very likely, I think!
I think you may have mentioned that book before. But I have not yet been able to get to Brisbane to the State Library to see if I can find it.
This is not made easier by the fact that our State Library is being redeveloped and is in bits and pieces all over Brisbane. And the Family History Unit is temporarily in some obscure suburb - I have no idea how to get there!
Actually my main interest is in finding out about the children of Joseph Huband Smith and when he and his wife died. But that is not easy from here, either!

Hi Maria from Aussie,
I beleive it is now your Summer, we are now experiencing freezing Frost and Fog,
However the meaning of the term Seneschale is, The Chief Steward or Butler of a great Hosehold, sometimes the Seneschal had the job of dispensing Justice and was given High Military Commands.
The townlands you mentioned are not in Dublin, it seems your Ancester came from Northen Ireland, lucky you, they have all there records,
Townland-County-Barony-Civil Parish-Provence
Ballycastle-Antrim-Cary-Ramoan-Ulster
Ballycastle-Mayo-Tiranley-Doanfeeny-Connaght
Ballycastle-Down-Ards Lower-Groyarby-Ulster
Ballycastle-Londonderry-Keenaght-Aghanloo-Ulster
Ballycastle-Mayo-Tiranley-Doonfeeny-Connaght
Dunluce-Antrim-Lower Dunluce-Coleraine-Ulster
Oldstore-Antrim-Lower Massercene-Grannge of Mucamore-Ulster
All of the above is were you will find your Ancestor, I suggest you buy a Map of Ireland which is very detailed and get to know these Townlands, also visit the Pronti Website which covers all of Ulster and good luck, it seems you are on to a winner, if I can be of further help, just ask,
Regards Catherine
-
Thanks Catherine! :D
I will have a look at the website you mentioned.
Yes, it is summer here, though it is vacillating between being scorching hot and fairly chilly. I'm just thinking of putting on my winter dressing gown as I sit in front of the computer. No freezing frost and fog, though!

Your offer is extremely generous. I am looking for my gg grandmother, Charlotte Elizabeth Hinkson, born 1851 in Dublin. She married John Joseph Burne of Wicklow. Her brother is Henry Albert Hinkson, born 1865. He married Kathryn Tynan, an Irish poet. I would surely appreciate any help you can give me. I believe Charlotte and Henry were Church of Ireland, while Kathryn was Roman Catholic.

I really appreciate the offer of the free lookup! I'm trying to find out anything I can about my great grandfather and great grandmother:
Michael Doyle and Sarah Ringwood
I've been unable to locate any information about them other than their names. No parent's names, or any other information.
Also, if you happen to find any information on my grandmother's family (Mary Bridget Browne), I'd appreciate it!
I know that Mary Bridget Browne married George Doyle (son of the ggparents above), and that they at one time lived on Tulca (sp?) Lane in Dublin. I believe both families have long-time Dublin ancestry.
Appreciate anything you can find! Thank you SO MUCH!

Hi Kate,
I wondered if I could ask for your help / opinion.
I am researching various family names. On my mother's side I've been researching Styles / Day / O'Sullivan / O'Shea from Kerry and have had some success (particularly with the first two). My mother's name was O'Sullivan and I see you have interests there too.
My father's side is from Dublin and is proving much more difficult. My grandfather was Edward Horan (b.1911) and although he lived in Dublin I have discovered he was born in Carrickmaross, Co. Monaghan. His family were not from Monaghan but I don't know if they originally came from Dublin or elsewhere in Ireland!! His parents were Daniel Horan and Bridget Brennan.
My father's mother was definitely from Dublin. She was born May (probably Mary) Byrne. They lived in North Dublin - Donnycarney - but I have been informed the family was originally from South Dublin. She was born in 1912 and had 2 elder sisters, Sarah & Jane. Their parents were Charles Byrne and Mary Walker, herself daughter of Joseph Walker & Sarah Rooney.
Wondered if you had any ideas, suggestions?
Many Thanks
Denis
-
Hi,
For your father's side I would look up the marriages of Damiel Horan and Bridget Brennan. Perhaps first looking for other children born before Edward to pin down a likely year of marriage. Or you could look for them in the 1911 census where Edward was born. This would show how many years they were married and then you can look for their marriage. Same really for your father's mother.
The indexes are available in the Dublin GRO and on film at your local family history centre. The census is in the Dublin National Archives and (I think) also on film at the FHC.

Thanks Kate.
Next time I'm in Dublin I'll do that.

First time I post in this forum.
I'm searching for more information on the following persons living in Dublin (1772? - 1820):
Name Address
William Duncan, Esq 34, Charlemont Street, merchant
John Duncan, Esq 6, Granby Rd., merchant
James Duncan, Esq 17, Eccles Street (a Hospital now), W Indies Trader
Leland Crosthwait, Bart Bank of Ireland, Bank Director
Rebecca Duncan
Agnes Duncan
Jane Duncan
Margaret Duncan
John Craig
David Taylor Eden Quay (agent of the Dublin, Glasgow &
Cork Steam Packet Company). Edendale.
A son of William Duncan, James Duncan emigrated to Barranquilla, Colombia, South America, on or about 1815 and his brother William followed him later. James Duncan, the son, married Jane Anne Emily Dimmock in 1823 in Colombia and their two children were sent to Ireland (?) and/or England to study. I have reason to believe they lived with David Taylor in Edendale in the early 1830s... but I'm not sure.
The son of James Duncan, Esq., married a daughter of Leland Crosthwait and became the manager of the Bank of Ireland in Sligo. I have more info on him.
I've hit a brickwall trying to get more info/data on my ancestors in Ireland... it has been difficult. I'm interested in the mercantile trade in Dublin in early 1800s.
Any help is appreciated.

Hello A.P Duncan,
Re the Duncan/Crosthwaith surname,
The Surname Duncan is Scottish,
I don't know if you have access to the 1850 Directory of Dublin, in it your Crosthwaith Ancestor has a good mention.
Thomas Crosthwaith, was a Director of the Bank of Ireland which was founded in 1783, it was at
2 College Green,
Dublin 1,
It only closed about two years ago, but the Business went to the Central Bank of Ireland ,also College Green,
Telephone them for information at 01677680 or e-mail them at: www.bankofireland.ie and ask about their Archives.
Leland Crosthwaith and sons seemed to have a Business in Chalpleizod, Co Dublin,
Thomas Crosthwaith J,P 9 Fitzwellian St East also with an address in Chapelizod, called Mulberry House, the above seem to be a family.
I have three Duncans mentioned in the 1850 Directory, William, John and James

I am trying to trace my family history. I am originally from Francis St and brought up in Bellvue buildings off Thomas Ct, Dublin 8.
I am 70 yrs young and left dear old Ireland when I was sixteen because there was no work in Dublin at the time. I would welcome any contact with anyone familiar with Dublin 8/Taylors Lane/School St; anyone that lived/lives there or had any family there. My mother's name was Johanne Lawlor DOB 2/5/1905 - she worked at Jacob's Biscuit factory. Her father/my grandfather was called Thomas Lawlor and worked at Guinness brewery @ James St. My Grandmother's maiden name was Ellen O'Neil. Her father's name was Danny O'Neil. The O'Neil's were originally from Co Wicklow.
My father was Thomas Stanley DOB 22/1/05. He was from Francis St and had 7 brothers and 2 sisters. The family had shops on Francis St. until about the early-mid-1940's.
I am trying to obtain some photographs of my mother Johanne Lawlor Stanley, as I have none. I am hoping that someone might have a photo of my mother perhaps with their family or work or a school photo. If anyone knew the family, I would welcome correspondance. Thank you. I can be contacted at (*)

Dear Catherine
I wonder if you might have time to help me look for my g-grandfather Edward, born around 1864, probably in Dublin, although the family was originally from County Clare. I am also desperately seeking his father, Arthur William Cowan, all we know about him is that he supposedly died of yellow fever in South America.
I really would appreciate any information you might have, as I'm completely stuck on this side of the family.
Thanking you in advance,
Regards
Robert
-
Catherine and Neil,
Have you looked for their births in the indexes as they were both born post 1864 and should have been registered. The indexes are available on film at your local family hsitory centre and at the GRO in Dublin.

Dear Catherine,
My family has been looking for my grandmother's family for many years. Her name was Kathleen Burns, Daughter of Ernest and Maryanne Burns. She was born about 1889 but was reared by her maternal grandparents, Owen and ? Howey (Hoey). She took their name until later years. In 1901 I expect She was in school, possibly the Dominican Convent. In 1891 Owen Howey was living in 118 Lower Gardiner St (Dublin City) St Thomas. Could you help me with the 1901 Census. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Rob Wise :D

Robert,
If his birth was post 1864 and registered (estimated around 20% weren't) he'll be in the indexes. They are available on film at your local family history centre and at the GRO in Dublin.

I can trace them in Bradford/Leeds/Wakefield from 1861,1871,1881 to their deaths in 1889 and 1890.
Their children were born from around 1854 and were christened and married in the Roman Catholic church St Mary's Bradford.
I can't find a marriage record for them on the registration index.
Can you suggest where I start looking for their marriage/birth records.
Thanks in anticipation

Katebray,
I am not sure if you can help me.
My great great grandmother was called Elizabeth Ada Littlejohns (nee mansfield) In 1919 she was performing on stage in Dublin (unsure which theatre) and collapsed she was rushed to Hospital and died. She was actually from London. She used the stage name Vida Varrell.
If you can help with anything on this death it would be great.
Also I am really stuck trying to locate my great grandfather Grosvenor Ashford Clarke he was a dramatic actor. In 1920 he supposedly married my great grandmother Irene Littlejohns a singer (can't find the marriage anywhere) the daugther of the lady above. They had four children a daughter in 1921, a son in 1922 and twins (boys) in 1924 one of which was my grandfather.
As Irene's mother and father was in Dublin in 1919, it is quite possible she was with them and this is where she met him, he does not exist anywhere in English or Scottish records, and is causing me real problems, as he is the main person I am interested in finding out about.
Grosvenor I assume would of been born somewhere between 1890 - 1900.
You possibly won't be able to help me on any of the above, but anything is worth a try.
regards,
Siobhan

Hello from Canada!
My grandfather Alban Linley Bird was born in Dublin, 1894 to Joseph and Edith Bird (nee: Challen) at Leinster Rd, Rathmines. He appears on the 1901 Census but is not on the 1911. Was disowned. I am trying to get more information on Joseph, a middle name or his parents names (he was from Kent/she, Brighton Sussex) Is there anyplace you could possibly look up the Bird side of the family? A later Census perhaps? Alban Linley's brothers and sisters: Godfrey, Eileen, Harold Theodore, Edith Mabel and Amy Dorothy. Thanks for your valuable time...
-
Hi,
What details do you have for Joseph and Edith Bird on the 1901 census? This will give a year of birth and an estimate of year of marriage to go back further in the registers, either Endland or Ireland.
The latest released census is 1911. You say the Bird family have moved from the Rathmines address by then? What profession did he have? Perhaps he is in the Dublin postal directories.

He appears in the Dublin Directories, 1851 census and Griffith registration ready married about 1850 in South Anne St and I have his children's RC baptisms in St Andrews but where did he come from and where did they marry? Any clues in your database?
Thanks

Reply:
Joseph Bird Esquire and Edith were at Rathmines address on the and 1901 and 1911 Census - He was an accountant/secretary - Joseph was born 1860 according to the Census but he may have been a few years older. Edith was born 1862. It was my grandfather who disappeared between 1901 and 1911. Thanks for taking the time to help me..

I am looking for info on my fathers family, and wondered if you could help me in any way.
My father Edward Matthews was born in dublin in 1918. My grandfather was George Humphrey Matthews born in 1882. My great grandfather was William Matthews.
I have 3 addresses-30 Garville Avenue in 1882, 90 Tritonville Road in 1918 and 33 Mount Merrion Avenue,Blackrock in 1939.
The last entry in my fathers family tree was a Lady Ellisha Mathew, born in 1781 in Thomastown Tipperary, and died in 1841 .She was the daughter of Francis Mathew Earl Of LLandaff. She had 3 sons Thomas, Robert and William Fitzwilliam but she was not married.
How do i link my great grandfather William to one of the sons named above.Any help would be greatly appreciated

Still looking for CROWDER anywhere in Ireland. Have William CROWDER born abt 1806 and his wife Hannah PARKER born about 1816. I first have then in 1842 in Macclesfield, Cheshire on the birth of their first child. On the 1851 census it gives Ireland as a place of birth. He was a silk weaver and she was a spinner. The only other info I have is that Macclesfield seems to have a concentration of CROWDERs most of whome gave their place of birth as Dublin. I am totally syuck here and have been for over 10 years. ANY Crowder sighting might give me a lead.
Thanks

I am searching for the Grayburn family. In particular the birth details of John Grayburn (c 1828-1878) The 1851 Hull census records him as having been born in Ireland.
I do not have much more than that to go on although there was an Eliza Grayburn in St Lukes, c1832 and another Grayburn had land in Donnybook.
The name has many variations including Graburn, Graybourne, Grayburne Greyburn etc. This may be too big a job, in which case I will understand
cheers

Thanks for the great offer. I am researching the names of Becton and Moore.
Richard Becton and Rose Becton (nee Farley) were my greatgrandparents. I cannot find any records for them but I know they died pre 1891 as they were deceased at the time of my grandparents marriage, they were Peter Moore, (a member of the dublin metropolitan police force) married in Dublin but originally from Drogheda, to Mary Becton in 1891. They had several children, Cecelia, Kathleen, annie and Agnes who along with their mother died between 1900 and 1912. The two remaining children were my father Thomas Leo Moore and his brother George patrick Moore who were eventually sent to Carriglea Trade School at Kill of the grange.
I was wondering if you had in any of your records mention of these people. I am searched for a long time for information on the bectons but without success. I believe Richard Becton originally came from Portarlington.
Many thanks

Apologies in advance!
Dinah aka Maria McDermot - suspect born c1840 - place of birth Dublin, IRL - sorry no other location detail :-[
In 1866 she is living in Birkenhead, Cheshire - on daughter's birth certificate in same year she states her daughter's father's name is John Biddle (Sugar Refiner - Lab).
Can find no trace of marriage in England.
However! Her daughter's marriage certificate states her father is Michael Biddle - Photographer! ???
Can someone please advise if there is there any way of searching to find;
1. Maria/Dinah McDermott and John or Michael Biddle in Dublin pre-1860?
2. A marriage for the same in Ireland/Dublin?
Struggling with this one - any advice greatfully received :)
-
HI,
If he was a photographer, try checking the Dublin Directories as he should have had a listing. There's one online. A link on my website.
Kate
-
Great site Kate but no joy
Sadly - the more I think about this, the more I think the "Michael Biddle - Photographer" figure is a romanticised, more respectable father figure created by Annie or her mother!
According to the 1871 census her mother Maria aka Dinah was a widow so he'd "hopped it" by then. There was an older sibling called Olive/Oliver or Clive born 1860 but he also seems to vanish off the face of the earth!
If anyone stumbles across a John Biddle with a Dinah (Maria) Biddle (nee McDermott) - give us a shout!
Thanks
-
Hi and thank you for your kind offer.
I have written in more detail about Francis Louis Longford in another message, but to keep this one short I wonder whether he returned to Ireland from Liverpool between 1901 and 1907 when his wife claimed to be a widow at her next marriage, and died there. As I believe he originated from Blackrock and some of his family may have still been there, I would be grateful if you could look up the cemetery records for there and see whether there is any mention of this man at all.
Thank you for any help you can give.

Hi there!
I am going to visit Dublin in 3 weeks time and I just wonder if you can give me a clue where to begin!! I plan to visit the GRO to try to get more information on my Wade ancestors who I believe came from Kilkenny. GGG Grandfather, Hugh, was born there c. 1837. Are there birth records there? I then plan to go down to Kilkenny to visit their library. Any advice you can give me will be greatly received.

Hi Kate, I am trying to trace my g.g.mother Ellen Mcgrath. The only info I have is marriage and death certs. She married Daniel Addis at Auckland N.Z. in 1848 but have no idea how the family got to N.Z. Birth date appears to be around 1822 in
Dublin. Daniel was a british soldier who went to Australia 1n 1841 as escort on a convict ship. It appears that quite a few Irish families were sent to Australia and I wondered if they may have been among them and then went to N.Z., rather than emigrating to N.Z. direct. Ellen's father was John Mcgrath, a contractor. I really don't know where to start and hope you may have some ideas?
Many thanks, Topsy 1010.

Hello Katebray, I am searching for information on my great grandmother MARY JONES nee PERSSE. Her husband was William JONES. She died giving birth to my grand father Samuel on June 18th, 1864. She had two older sons, Robert and Jack.
The family are believed to have lived in North Wall, Dublin. They were almost certainly Protestant by faith, and not in the upper strata's of society, as William was a Groom, who died shortly afterwards of pneumonia brought on by trying to rescue horses in a flood.
Mary's sister (name unknown) brought up the boys, and they later set sail for Canada and Australia.
Hope you can help.
Wendy in Western Australia.

Hello Katebray, I am desperately seeking records of my great grand mother's death. She died giving birth to my grand father. Her name was MARY JONES nee PERSEE. Her husband's name was William, and my grand father's name was Samuel. He had two older brothers, Robert & Jack.
I know for certain SAMUEL was born June 18th 1864. Probably in Dublin.
His father died of pneumonia shortly afterwards, trying to rescue horses trapped in their stables during a flood. The boys were raised by their grandmother & Mary's sister, their aunt.
I strongly suspect they were Protestant by religion.
That's about all the information I can give you. I HOPE that you might be able to find some record of MARY which will tell me something of her origins.
Optimistically,
Wendy in W. Australia
-
Hi Wendy,
Do you have a family history centre you can visit? Check out the birth and death indexes they have on film. The entry should give an address.
If Samuel was born in 1864 and IF his birth was registered, it would likely be in the IGI database.

Kate,
I posted a request a few weeks ago and there has been no response. It was regarding any death registration for Francis Louis Longford in Dublin between 1901 and 1907. Am I correct in thinking that there was nothing to be found, or am I just waiting in line for you to check all those many requests you have received?
Best wishes
Mary

Hi Catherine,
For a couple of years now I have been trying to find details of my Great Grandmother's birth. Wonder if you can help.
She was born Eliza Prescott, around 1844 in Dublin. Father Edward Prescott. Family legend has it that Eliza was half Spanish, obviously on her mother's side.
Not much to go on, but ever optimistic.

Hi
I wonder if anyone can help with the following. I would be grateful for any advice please.
My Grandfather John William MEAD was born in Somerset in 1903 but I have been unable to trace his parents on the 1901 census. They are not on the England 1901 census. As they were married in DUBLIN in 1901-1903 I presume that is where they should be on the census. Has anyone seen them please?
They are ARTHUR SAMUEL MEAD (AKA SAMUEL ARTHUR MEAD) and he married ELIZABETH SWORDS in Dublin.
Thanks you for any help as they seem to vanish for that period until John William Mead was born in 1903.
Cheers

Hi Catherine
Rebecca Thorpe - daughter of Samuel Thorpe - married James Milner Pottage in Liverpool 1857 - she's listed on all census as born in Ireland - and as Dublin is the closest to Liverpool - maybe I can start here - would it be possible to look up 1851 and see if she appears living with her Dad? - not much information I'm afraid - but I would appreciate any help you can give me - Thanking you in advance - Annie

The 1901 census in Dublin is not indexed so I suggeswt you start by looking for their marriage in the indexes which you can see at your local family history centre. The register entry can be bought from the Dublin GRO and that should have an address.

The 1851 census of Ireland was destroyed. There is an 1851 city of Dublin householders list that survived but it only has head of household. Also there are Dublin directories. What was her father's occupation? If he was a trader or gentry, he should be in it.
People from many counties of Ireland came through Dublin to Liverpoo. I would start with looking for SAmuel on the Griffiths valuation to try and narrow down the parish or townland. Also does any of the UK censuses specify county or townland name?

Dear Catherine
Please will you look up any available Catholic information you have. I am looking for Terrance Toole, born 1795-1800, Ireland.Occupation: StonemasonI believe my mother said that the family came from Dublin, but as both grandparents were Irish I really do not know which one she was referring to and was I too young at the time.
His first child was James Toole, and was born in Manchester, England, 1819, others were Elizabeth, Terrance jnr, Frances and Charles all born in Manchester. Both Elizabeth and Frances marriage certificates give their Father as Terrance Toole born Ireland.
If it is not too much trouble I would appreciate any information or advice.
I have completed a lot of of searches and drawn many blanks, but I did note that there was a Terence Toole in the 1850 Directory of Dublin. So perhaps the name had survived through another descendant.
Thank you for your great offer.

Hi i have searched for years for some trace of my ggrandmother Mary Elaine Fitzgerald on her death certificate it stated that she was born in Dublin she would have been born around 1864 or 1872 as she had apparently lied about her age when she had an illegitimate child in NZ in 1888 she was a Roman catholic and had told family members she had grown up in a convent i have been in touch with a couple of the convents but no lucksorry there is so little to go on but anything is worth a try i think she may have also used the name Minnie Ellen many thanks Kate

Hi harriet,
Have you looked in the birth indexes for her birth under either name?
Did she get married or appear on a census for a better estimate of place and year of birth? The early yeras 1864 to 1866 appear on the IGI database at familysearch.org and later years on the British Vital records index Version 2.

Catherine,
New to Rootsweb and working my way around.
I have the Cerificate of Marriage of my gg grandparents from 1874. The street address in Dublin is shown with the number and the street name. I happened to see that a B&B is at that address now. Has the City of Dublin changed street numbers or in all probably this still the same address?
Thanks very much.

Hi Catherine
Looking for the KEARNEY family believed to have been in Dublin from time to time!
These details from 1881 census, Neath, Glamorgan:
KEARNEY James b 1829 Dublin
Honora b 1841 Tipperary
Mary Ann b 1862 London Middx
William b 1862 London, Middx
Patrick W b 1864 London, Middx
Francis James b 1868 Dublin
Margaret b 1875 Dublin
Sarah Ellen b 1873 Dublin
William is in my husband's direct line. I cannot definitely associate him and Mary Ann with this family, but know that his father's name was James.
James's occupation was labourer (unfortunately!)
Is there anything I can do to pin them down?
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hiya,
I dont suppose you have any info on O'Donnells or O'Gormans from 1926 onwards. My grandad Isaac Slyvester O'Donnell married Violet O'Gorman in Rathmines in 1926.
Isaacs sister was living on Cowper Road in Feb 1928. Her name was Mary Veronica O'Donnell, known as Vera. Need to find her marriage.

I am looking for Adam Clarke Baynes and his wife Mary Ann or Martha, They had a bookshop in Liverpool until 1841 or thereabouts. They then left Liverpool, for Dublin.
At least I think it was Dublin. A book was published in 1845 which lists A.C.Baynes of Dublin as the publisher. This may mean that he had a bookshop there.
"Irish Wrongs and English Misrule; or, the repealer's epitome of grievances." by P O'Donohoe
A family bible has an approximate death for Adam of 185? They would have been Non-Conformist or Church of England/Ireland.
I don't think they appear in the 1851 Dublin Directory.
Anything you can find would be welcomed.
Thankyou

Hi Catherine,
What a blessing to find you.
I am needing help on my Grandparents, on my fathers baptism certificate in Calicut India, their names are stated as Peter Doyle and May Elizabeth Doyle.
In a letter from an old aunt who married my uncle Michael Doyle my grandfather was called Peter John Doyle, born in Dublin possible brother called Jack, sisters name unknown.
Grandads wife could also have been known as Elizabeth Josephine surname Dowdall, born Inchicore, Dublin 05.03.1893 she had two brothers Charles and Michael.
Peter Doyle was obviously in the Army as his four children were all born in army barracks, Tidworth, Bury and Calicut, India. I have tracked down a Peter Doyle who served with the Lancashire fusiliers who did tours of these towns and countries but with no personal information.
Another possibility is that he was originally with the Dublin Fusiliers and change to the Lancashire Fusiliers on a recruitment campaign in the 1920's.
After this I know nothing, can you possibly help. It is the only line in my history I know nothing about.
One day, I am sure a trip to Dublin will be my only way forward.
Thanks for anything
Regards
Lita

Hi Catherine
I have so little information, but here goes:
John Condon, my GGrandfather born approx 1846 in Cork. Left Ireland for Lancashire. Married in 1869 in Lancaster. Father's name was Michael. Both were Shoemaker Journeymen.
Appears in 1881 Lancashire Census. In 1891 Lancashire Census his wife is noted as "widow". In 1909 Son's Marriage Certificate wife is noted as "dec" but John is "Postman". No mention of "dec", so presumably living.
Is there anything you can look up that might help?
Thanks

Bridget came to England around 1920 and married my grandfather in 1924,on her marriage certificate it had her age as 29 her birthday was on the 5 July. I believe that Bridget and Thomas had a daughter who may have been called Bridget she was left with her grandmother in Ireland, My grandmother was still in England when her daughter died of diphtheria around 1925 but i can find no record of it .I appreciate any help that you can give me or if you can point me in the right direction. I expect you have heard it many times that it is not always easy researching our Irish ancestors regards Cornish

Hello Catherine
My g-g-g-g grandfather John Sherry was born in Dublin around 1792 and by 1822 had married and found his way to Paddington, London where the Sherry family have been until my generation. From the 1851 census, I know he was a tailor and he died in 1855. Until now I had understood there to be little chance of finding out any more about his family. I know this is a really long shot but do you think there is any more that can be discovered.
Thanks in advance

Hiya
Could you check the Ireland gro birth indexes for 1895 to see if there is a birth of Grosvenor Ashford Clarke or Ashford Clarke.
Plus are there any phone directories for Dublin for 1919.
I am looking for any of the following people.
Grosvenor Ashford Clarke or Ashford Clarke
William and Elizabeth Littlejohns.
Lastly my great great grandmother Elizabeth Ada Littlejohns named above was an actress in the theatre. Her stage name was Vida Varrell. In may 1919 she was performing on stage in Dublin (theatre unknown) when she collapsed and was rushed to hospital. She later died. I would of thought this would of hit the papers. So anything on that would be great. I really hope to be able to get to Dublin myself at some time in the future, but live in Leicestershire so it is a bit difficult.
Anything you can do to help with any of the above would be great.
regards,
Siobhan

Their address in 1895 was Ballon St, Dublin according to Steven's birth certificate. that has just come to light with a relative! At some point later they were living at 21 Lw Wellington St, Dublin (possibly early 1900's)

Catherine,
I've just started researching my Spillane family in Ireland, and know very little before my grandfather Dominick's arrival in New York in 1910. His brother Jeremiah (possibly Jerome) was already here I believe. The Ellis Island record for Dominick's trip states that he left his mother (Kate Ford Spillane) on Stafford Street in Dublin. No mention of their father, Jeremiah. I thought maybe there was a census record from 1910 that might shed some light on the family. Can you help?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Dear Catherine,
Do you have time to locate further information on the family of John Geary (b. Aug. 5, 1756 - Dec. 30, 1798; Dublin)? His siblings include Charles Geary (b. Jan. 26, 1752; Dublin), Edward Geary (b. Apr. 1, 1753; Dublin), Sydny Geary (b. May 22, 1754; Dublin), William Geary (b. Apr. 11, 1758; Dublin), and Mary Geary (b. Oct. 11, 1759; Dublin). His father is John Geary who was married to a Mary of unknown surname.
He was married to Jane Mussen Geary and his children include Richard (Apr. 21, 1782 - Oct. 24, 1838; Dublin), Eliza, Mary, Jane, Sarah, William, John, Arabella, and Henry.
I believe that his son John Geary emigrated to Westmoreland Co., PA, USA in 1820 (approx.) and married Catherine Coyle Geary (b. 1792, Ireland - Jan. 25, 1872). I descend from their family.
I would be especially interested in the birth dates of his children, especially John. The John Geary that I descend from is born on or near 1789, Dublin and dies on or near Sept. 4, 1872, Latrobe, PA, USA.
Thank you for any help that you can provide.
Sincerely,
Brian C. Geary

Dear Kate - I wondered if you could help me trace the parish records for the marriage of my Gt Grandfather James O'Loughlin (O'Loghlen) to Mary Ann Johnston in Dublin between 1860 - 64. - They had children Torlough (1863) and Francis (1865) Margaret (1868) - all baptised at St Mary's. But there is no trace of their marriage at St Mary's - I feel that they may of married at her parish (but she was born in Dublin - as UK 1871 census states) - but I can't trace which one - Unfortunately I live 3.5 hours away in Mayo with wife and 3 children under 6 and find it almost impossible to get to Dublin and look - Can anybody help me - I don't want to give up as I feel that I have gone so far.
-
Hi Catherine,
Thank you for a free look up for Dublin offer!
I am not sure how I can start-you see, my great-grandmother was from Dublin, Ireland. No one knows if she meant the City or County.
I have been trying to find her birth entry to no success. I even went to the GRO in person when I was on holiday in Ireland from America. The same results.
Perhaps you can help me out-I hope it is not going to be too much trouble!
What I know about her is that her name was supposedly Mary Deegan and that her parents were: Michael Symth and Mary Deegan.
This information does not help me at all.
Then I got a death certificate of her husband, my great-grandfather, it showed her last name was Lynch.
Another problem is that I do not know her actual age or birthdate. From what I learnt through the documents I have, it seems she may have born between 1870 and 1880 or a bit late.
This is a real brick wall for me. I could not go beyond this wall.
I have tried the indexes. Not much success, either.
I would welcome your helpful suggestion or ideas that will help me to climb over the brick wall. :)
Your help would be most appreciated in my wee corner!
Regards,
Tees

Hi
It might be a bit out of reach but anything is worth a try. I have a couple who married in Dublin on 28 jan 1804 at the Mansion House Dublin. The grooms (John Hutton) father Henry Hutton was mayor of Dublin at the time. The bride and groom were of opposite beliefs and had to have dispensation to marry. Apparently the ArchBishop married them. Due to the nature of the marriage I have been advised that it is highly unlikely that there is actually a marriage registration for them.
If you have any resources that might give me some more info especially on the brides family (Her name was Jane Burton, her father was Edward William Burton and she had an uncle by the name of Mr Blood)
Thanks
Christy

Hi,
As you know the exact date of marriage and they were prominent, I would look in the newspapers of the time for the announcement, a few days either side of the event.

Hello Catherine
As Co. Kildare is near to Dublin does this area included in your research offer ?
I am looking for info on the mother of my great-grandfather who died & is buried in Kill Churchyard in Naas. She was Anna/Anne WRIGHT who died suddenly on 19th October 1862 while in the service of the Earl of Clonmell's Bishops Court estate. If there are estate records kept of household personnel employed at Earl of Clonmell's Bishop Court estate in Co Kildare, for the period around 1854-1862 I am told they may well be in the National Archives. I am also loking for a male named CLEMENT as Anne had a child born 1856 in London who is registered as Louis Clement.
Any info or leads welcome. thanks John

Francis Louis Longford

Sisters were Harriette and Florence Helen but of course these may have been married and as yet I don't know anything about them.

Hi Kate
I've been searching for info on my grandfather for many moons, with little luck.
He may well be at rest at Blackrock.
His name was Peter Dobbins (Dobbyns). He died, I am told, in Nov 1955.
The inscription should give his birth year, which still eludes me ! (middle to late 1880's I believe)
I would appreciate any info you can find on him or any under the Dobbins name.
Thank you

Kate, I wonder if you could please find the time to search for any information about:
James Henry Blyth Kearney/Kerney/Kierney
He says that he was born in Dublin. According to his marriage certificate, he was born c.1839 but in the 1881 census he was born c.1843.
Father's name was James Kearney 'Gentleman'. This has always intrigued me as Joseph was just a humble painter and decorator but I'm unable to find anymore about him.
Many thanks for any information.
Sue (in Kent)

Hi Kate, it's Sue in Kent again. Sorry! I've given you the wrong name - it's Joseph Henry Blyth Kearney, not James - I got confused with his father. ;)

I have just noticed that you have access to a 1950 directory for Dublin. Could you give me any information about any of the Henderson family living in Dublin please. I am looking for an address for Alfred Henderson but any other Hendersons in the directory are of interest too.
Many thanks.

Hi Catherine,
This is great. It is my first post.
I found my ancestor, Cecilia Pendergast, when she got married in London to James Stanton in 1823. She emigrated July 1843 from Liverpool on the Ship Scotia. Later a census in the USA (Baltimore, Maryland) listed her as born in Ireland. I have never found an exact birthdate but the various census suggests between 1790 and 1793. A possible brother, Charles Pendergast, was listed as born in Dublin in 1791.
That is not a lot of info. but I am hoping there is a database that may contain Cecilia born between those years or Cecilia and Charles in the same Pendergast family about that time period. Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi Catherine
I am new to the board and would like to accept your offer of a search. Location Dublin City . My husbands family (Smyth) his Gt Grandfather Marcus William Smyth married Frances Eleanor Jackson in the parish of St. Thomas 14.06.1858 their were both full age. He lived at the time at 4 Caroline Row and she at 60 Upper Sackville St. His father was a Gentleman(meaning?) and her father was a Merchant. But we have come to a full stop apart from knowing their father names John Smyth and Robert Jackson and we know a John Smith(Smyth) lived in 4 Caroline Row which was rented even with this information we have been unable to trace the family any further. It has been said that they end up in Bray around 1865/1879. The family end up in Liverpool in 1901 but by then Marcus William had passed away. Can you help us to take the Irish origin further back any suggestions would be most welcome as our short visits over to Dublin have been in vain.
Thanks
Mary Ellen
-
Hello Mary Ellen,
I regret I am unable at this minute to assist with your Smyths of Dublin. I know quite a number of people with that surname in various parts of Ireland. I believe
I am related to a family of that name as a daughter of a cousin of my mother (maiden name Alexander) married a Smyth. I am not sure of the precise terminology of the relationship. However it is not all bad news. I am able to answer your little query about the meaning of "Gentleman."
A Gentleman was a man of good education, well reared, who had private means. The title Esq was usually placed after his name. Lesser mortals were addressed (a) as Mr (Mister) and (b) by their surname only. The term Esq meant something in the 1800s and early part of the 1900s. Then we had two World Wars and everyone apart from the aristocracy, landed gentry and Royalty became more of less equal so the term Esq is used much more liberally in this day and age.
Best Wishes, Christopher

Thank you for your prompt reply which was helpful just for the information on Gentleman.

Hello Mary Ellen,
I have done a further bit of research for you. I looked at the Dublin Directory of 1850 and discovered a Francis Jackson was living at 60, Upper Sackville Street. I would assume he was the grandfather of Frances (a girl bearing a similar name to him. Maybe the family were expecting a son and switched the "i" for an "e" when a baby daughter arrived instead of the anticipated son who would have been named after Robert's father). http://www.loughman.dna.ie/dublin1850/xdubdir43.html#Jackson
All the Best, Christopher
-
Hi Chrishtopher,
My Jackson's did live at 60 Upper Sackville St. so Francis Jackson must be Frances's Grandfather as Robert Jackson was her father.
Also her and Marcus W Smyth were married at St Thomas's Church (United Church of England and Ireland) on the 14th June 1858.
Thank for your time in confirming the address of the Jackson's.

Good Afternoon Mary Ellen,
I hope you do not mind my posting bits of information as thoughts occur to me.
I used to work with a circus. No, I was neither a clown nor a juggler but I am attempting to multitask by juggling with incoming and outgoing messages at the moment.
Did you notice on the site I mentioned the names of Jackson and Bryce (grocers and wine merchants), Jackson and Sidney (offices), and Jackson and Co (grocers). You referred to Robert Jackson, the father of Frances, being a Merchant. I am wondering whether Robert was involved with these businesses. Would you mind having a close look at the Christian names of members of the family from the present day back to the time of the marriage of Marcus and Frances? Look for any second given names that look like a surname. You may find nothing but I would be interested to know if a Bryce or a Sidney appear.
All the Best, Christopher
-
Hi Christopher,
Neither Sidney or Bryce are used for family names, the main one's are Charles, Robert, Frederick, Frances. If you don't mind could you give me the definition of "struck out". Thanks for your time.

Hei Mary Ellen,
Could you please put the phrase "struck out" into the sentence or paragraph in which it appeared. You only mention your family moving to Bray and Liverpool.
I would have expected such an expression to appear on a list of emigtrants or possibly in a will.
Best Wishes,
Christopher
-
Hi Christopher
Struck out appears on the properties ie. In Fee. (Griffiths Valuation) We have a Latter day Saints Form with one of the children being born Brays Common Dublin she was Alice Emily Smyth who married Alfred Garland (Mormon) and that is how we know they moved to Bray, we know that they all move to Liverpool because they are all in the 1901 Census minus Marcus of course who was classed as a Bookkeeper on the his death not sure were my husband (Dave) got that information from. I don't think that they had money or property to be left in a will as they all ended up in Carlton Hill Liverpool Toxteth.
Thanks for your time and interest as you have given me renewed interest and hope to carry on with our searching.
Regards
Mary Ellen.

Hi Catherine
I am seeking information on Peter Butler & Annie Hand.
Peter according to his death certificate was born in County Kildare c1839, his father was also Peter (a Land Steward) but his mother is not known.
He married Annie Hand about 1859 hopefully in Dublin as all his children were born there, Jane 1859, Mary 1861, Rose 1877, Catherine 1878 born Dublin (on Ships records).
Anne 1867, Peter 1869, Mathew 1871, Elizabeth 1873 all born No 3 South City Dublin (from IGI).
Some of the family emigrated to Australia in 1884 and some in 1886.
Mother Annie Butler (nee Hand) and daughter Anne were not on either of the Ships so are assuming they died in Dublin.
Any information at all no matter how small is greatly appreciated.
Regards
EddieW

Hello Christopher,
I am not sure what is happening, but this is the second message I get that there is something in my mail box. and it brings me to your message, to a Mary Ann. Some how the lines or something must be cross or something. as I have no idea who you mean. I have put an inquiry in a long time ago on to different families. but have never heard back .
So maybe you might want to find out what is happening, as I am unable to tel why they are coming to me.

hello christopher wonder if you could point me in right direction. looking for info on john moffat merchant seaman married to catherine kenny.these are my g.grandparents.their daughter was my grandmother margeret dudgeon moffat. i was lead to believe that the family came from dublin and that both parents had died by the time margaret was aged 7 and then taken to glasgow to live. any help much appreciated. thanks dolly
-
Hello Dolly,
Could you provide a bit more information please? My great grandparents were born about the mid 1840s and grandparents 25 to 30 years later. If you are able to provide some precise dates it may be easier to find further details for you.
Best Wishes,
Christopher
-
hello christopher only info i have with dates is margarets marriage certdated 1919. she was aged 17 and both parents are deceased at this time. i would imagine that margaret was born about 1901/02. when i tried dublin register house they had no such birth cert. i also assume if she was orphaned by the age of 7 then one or both parents had died around about 1909. sorry cant be any more specific about dates. many thanks dolly

Hi,
Thank you for your kind offer.
I am trying to find a death/burial record for Helena Ross (nee Burke).
She was also known as Ellen, Lena & Nellie and married to a William Ross.
We believe she died either in Dublin/Kildare between 1928 - 1955.
I have tried every avenue to find this information but no joy.
I live in Essex in the UK so I am finding it very hard to find any info, so any help will be very much appreciated.
thanks

Hello Dolly,
I am sorry I may not have explained the situation clearly. I got an email message just now advising me that you had posted a message on the board. You are quite right. Messages are posted on the board. I omitted to check, I like getting the email telling me there is a reply on boards I am watching, but I think you have the the option of not receiving these messages.
All the Best,

Hello Dolly,
I am sure, very soon you will be able to offer a lot of help to others on these boards - particularly the Irish boards as there is a large Irish community in Birmingham. You will be surprised how quickly you learn about the site. In a few weeks you should be posting messages like a good one. People will think you have had a lifetimes interest in genealogy.
Many Look-ups are easy. Your local library should have some street directories that you may use. They should also have computers so that you can post your messages before you head home. If you have access to a Central Library or your area Library Headquarters you will have access to many more genealogy reference books and probably old newspapers too.
Have fun searching for your ancestors and helping others with their queries.
All the Best, Chris

hello chris thans for the encouragement. i have a great many friends in birmingham who are irish/irish decent didnt think to pull their resources. didnt think the librerys here would hold info about ireland/scotland will also try those once again thank you and good luck.dolly

Hello Dolly,
Birmingham Libraries have their own Web Site. There is a catalogue. I tried to look at it but my PC will not show it to me. You may have more luck as your PC is probably set to get things in your own area. The Catalogue may show books on Irish genealogy or Scottish genealogy. Two words are sufficient to do a search of a library catalogue. www.birmingham.gov.uk/libraries
All the Best,
Chris

hello chris will look at that site. thank again good luck dolly

Dear Catherine
I would be so grateful if you could help me. I am looking for my g/gf g/gm on the 1901 census for Dublin
Michael Smith painter (decorator)
Mary Smith huckster
I particularly want to know where they lived. Some years
ago I visited Dublin and found the above information but
as they had about five children and there were no children
on the census I disregarded it and did not take the details...foolish me .

Hi Kate,
re the list of orphans in the 1901 census. I am looking for John Growney, born 1890, the Coombe, Dublin. His mother Maria Growney was unmarried at the time of Johns birth, she married William Fry in 1899 and had another son. I have her and the new baby (my grandfather) in the 1901 census but no sign of John, however he is with her in the 1911 census and is listed as John Fry, stepson (to William).
I wonder if he might have been in an orphanage in 1901? I will probably have to wait until the 1901 census is online and searchable, but perhaps you have him on your list.
Many thanks
Michelle

HI I wonder if you could possibly help me if you have the time. I am looking for the details of a birth that I have most of the record of. It is for
Male Jolly
Born on 28/11/1865
in Stillorgan, Dublin.
I have found this on the IGI site but there is also the number 0863 after the date of birth. He is definitely in my tree as his parents are Michael Jolly and Margaret Stewart. I am new to the whole family history and have never searched for anyone in Ireland so am a bit confused especially with the 0863 thing! I have not seen anything like it on any other births/baptisms except ones listed in or around Stillorgan! I would dearly like his name if possible.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this, and hopefully for any information that you can give me!

Hi
I wonder if anyone can help me. I am trying to trace my husband's grandmother and I defy anyone to come up with a solution :) Her name is Dolores Hemsbock (this is the name she used when she got married).
However, there is a story behind her birth!! She was born 26th September 1906 and baptised at Shrewsbury Cathedral, Shropshire. The mother is down on the baptism cert as Mary O'Connor (O'Conor) formerly Kilpatrick, father Edward William Hinstock. The father's name was changed two weeks later to Henstock. I don't know whether Dolores was born in Ireland or England. She was given up to Sisters of Charity Children's Home, Victoria, London in March 1906 where her name was registered Mary Dolores Handcox, fathers name Henry W Henstock, mothers name Mary O'Connor. Dolores was taken from the orphanage by her mother on June 2 1908 but was returned a couple of months later. I don't know if she was taken by her mother back to Ireland and then returned as Dolores left the orphanage on March 6th 1926. The last known address for the mother (on the orphanage registry) was 5 Laoagh Villas, Ashfield Road, Ranelagh Dubin. The father went to America. Can anyone researching Irish ancestry give me some direction as to where I might start looking?
I figure that Mary O'Connor returned to Ireland to the address above in sometime between 1906 and 1908 and it is believed that she died in 1908 again, we believe in Ireland. It might be possible that the mother returned to the family home of Kilpatrick's in Ranelagh and this name may show up on the 1901 or 1911 census. Is it possible to find out who lived at this address during this period - electoral registers etc? Obviously, Mary might not be her known name, it appears that every female child was called Mary!! I'd be grateful if for any assistance in lookups or in unravelling this mystery.
Thanks, Sharon

Mary Eliazbeth Abbott born november 23rd 1904 father John Abbott moved to England ? marymarried in 1920's.Trying to find record of birth
Hei billabong,
These are people with the surname Abbott who were in Ireland during the time of Griffiths Valuation of Ireland. They were found in several counties http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php I think we may have to attempt to find Mary Elizabeth's grandfather.
All the Best, Chris

Hi Christopher
Any suggestions on how to locate Marcus Wm Smyth we have marriage cert
father's name and address's but he seems to have disappeared after his marriage apart from the fact that we do know one of his children was born in Bray. So what would be the best sites to visit. As a visit to Dublin is out of the question for the time being.
Thanks
Mary Ellen

Hi everyone
I wonder if anyone could help me please. I am looking for any records for the Becton family.
My Grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Becton. I have her birth, marriage and death certificates but cannot find any record of her parents.
She had a brother George Becton and they are the children of Richard Becton and Rose Farley. Both children were born in Brabazon Row, Dublin in 1867 and 1871.
My understanding is that the children were orphaned at a young age and I was always told that Mary Becton was raised in Enniscorthy but a search in that region has always failed.
Would appreciate any help at all.
Many thanks
Seymor

As far as I know, only the archives in Dublin, National library, cork library. Does the famiy history centre have any on film?
Kate
Hiya Kate,
Is the National Library the same as Dublin City Library at Pearse Street? I think not Kate as the National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/fr_cata.htm is in Kildare Street so there are Newspaper Archives in two places in Dublin. I would be astounded if the LDS FHCs had any old Irish Newspapers on film. http://www.dublincity.ie/living_in_the_city/libraries/faq/newspaper_collection.asp
All the Best,
Chris

Hi Kate
As far as I am aware the family history libraries don't have them but I might be wrong. I will check. Unfortunately I might have to wait until I can get to Dublin as it is a bit far from here (Australia!!!!!!) ;D
Thanks Christy
Hiya Christy,
Leave that look up with me. I will be in Manchester this coming weekend. There are a lot of Dublin lookups on these pages so it will be worth my while taking the train (using my bus pass there is no charge) to Dublin and stopping over in a b&b or an independent hostel.
I agree that Australia is a long way from Dublin. Ballynahinch in Co. Down is, in Irish terms, a fair distance.
All the Best,
Chris

Hi There,
Is the offer of Free Look-ups in Dublin still on? Please can you help me if they are?
I am looking for the birth of Ann Gearing born in Dublin abt 1850. I am not completely sure if this is the correct spelling. Anything near would be a somewhere to start
Thats all I know about her birth I'm afraid. As the family story goes she came to Liverpool aged 14. Later married a man named George Broster. abt 1867. I have yet to find a marriage cert for their marriage, but I would think the marriage would have been in Liverpool but you never know.
Ann remainend in Liverpool in the Latimer Street/Scotland Road area until her death in 1934. Any help in finding any birth details of this Lady would be fantastic.
Best wishes and thanks for looking

Hello San,
I am sure the Free Look Ups will continue for a long time.
I looked in The Dublin Directory 1850 and had no success http://www.dublin1850.com/dublin1850/index.html
Then I tried Griffiths Valuations of Ireland (1848-64) and had a little bit of luck but not enough - the names appeared in Co. Londonderry and Co. Cork http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php
Some are on the LDS familysearch site http://www.familysearch.org
All the Best, Chris

If you have time please could you look up Michael Jolly. He was born (according to English Census Returns). In Stillorgan, Nr Dublin. I would appreciate his birth details (especially parent's names) and marriage details. He was born c1832 and married Margaret Stewart (born c1834 in Winchester, England), presumably in Stillorgan/Dublin. Their eldest child Julia Susanna was bc1859 also in Stillorgan. Further children were then born in Dublin. Their youngest child was born c1869 in Dublin and they lived in Bradford, West Yorkshire in 1871. Many thanks for reading this and hopefully finding some information out for me.

This topic has now been locked.
It was started by katebray with her generous offer to do Look-ups for Dublin, and has now become a bit of a general look-up topic, with many others helping with lookups. In the process it has become very cumbersome.
Rather than just adding to this thread, please start a new topic with your individual lookup requests.
If your query was not answered, please place a new one directly on the main board.
This way, no one will be missed.
Thank you for your understanding.
