Hello,
I understand in the Shire of Toodyay there is a granite formation called Shepherd's Rock, on which is inscribed "A.D. 1849 R. KIRBY" followed by two symbols, a shepherd's crook and a bottle (for tobacco water to treat scabs and sores on sheep). This relates to Richard KIRBY, a Parkhurst Boy, who arrived via Fremantle aboard the "Ameer" in February 1849.
Can anyone please help me with any details of his life post-1849 until his presumed death in 1896. Initially after arrival he worked for James B. SINCLAIR in Dumbarton and later in 1859 he lived in York and eventually about 1880 he was working as a shepherd in Esperance.........but these are the only details I have.
For the moment,

Have you contacted Kathy Hine at the Esperance Bay Historical Society?

Could anybody with an online subscription help with pinpointing the place of death in 1896 for Richard KIRBY? Also, Merlin, I have sent you a pm - would you mind removing the email address from your post please? Thanks :)

It's freely available online. No idea if it's the same Richard KIRBY that was a convict or not :-\

Thanks Merlin,
A very distinct possibility, but why did he migrate such a great distance from Esperance (1880) to Roebourne ??? ???

The above has already been given with more detailed information in my Reply #4.
This Richard KIRBY is most likely buried in the OLD Robourne Cemetery.

You don't have to be sorry :)
I was just bringing to your attention that the details were already found.
We have no idea if it's the correct Richard KIRBY or not :-\

My guess..it is him and if died at Roebourne..may be in a unmarked grave..that area prone to flooding/cyclones..and if records didn't get down to Perth..they would be lost.. I have quite a few..lost registrations but have been to graves..so know death dates.
Just had a look at State record files hoping that a will or death certificate was there but cant see any thing.
Still looking at other avenues.

Hello BAC3
I've just come across this conversation. I saw my name mentioned in one of the replies, and I do remember being contacted about a Parkhurst boy at one stage. I'm not sure if it was this one though - I am not involved with the Esperance Bay Historical Society, but with the Esperance Museum, specifically the archives.
I have an extensive list of employees of the Dempster family in Esperance, and have not come across Richard Kirby as yet. However, James Robert Sinclair was in Esperance at one stage, and it could be that Richard came here with him. The Sinclairs worked for the Dempsters.
As for the Roebourne move, the Dempster family had business interests up that way as well, and there were other employees who also made similar moves. So while Richard Kirby isn't on my list yet, I wouldn't rule him out as being an employee of that family - there are still resources I haven't looked at and he could be named in one of those.

Hello ghostgirl,
Thank you for your post.
The story of Richard KIRBY has not moved on and it will be interesting if your future research does throw more light on him. I hope so!!
