Title: DENMARK - Niels Pedersen
Post by: bsundeen on Saturday 20 February 16 01:32 GMT (UK)
Looking for information about the family of Niels Pedersen, who was born 24 July 1867 in Svaerdborg, Praesto, Denmark. Would like to know who his parents are and if he had any siblings. Any help about this individual and family would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi
Here is his birth record - nr 15:

http://www.danishfamilysearch.com/sogn959/churchbook/source23307/opslag4726668

I cannot read his parents' names unfortunately. The father could be Lars Peder Olsen from Ørslev and the mother Maren Pedersen.

I am seeing unmarried woman Maria Pedersen as his mother. Ugift fruen__   I can't remember the word properly, but I've seen it before.

I looked at the copy of the register on FamilySearch and the writing is a bit different. Clearer here. Jamcat, I think you are correct in saying the child's father is Lars Peder Olsen.

Family members think his mother may be Marie Pedersen, a daughter of Peder Hansen and Frederikke Capion but I'm not sure. They also think Niels Moved to Sweden when young and then to the United States about 1887. There shOuld be a record of this shouldn't there?

There are a number of records and trees for Peder Hansen in North Dakota with the same date of birth on Ancestry. Also his marriage to Fredrikke in Denmark.

Just noticed that Niels Pedersen is with the family in 1870 in line nr 6. Maria is not there. (I don't know how I missed it first time round)
1870 Census
http://ao.sa.dk/ao/data.ashx?bid=11850230

This is Peder Hansen and family leaving the parish in 1871. Nr 7

A better image of Niels birth record:
Father is recorded as Lars Peder Pedersen this time. Not Olsen.

Thank you so much for your help! This question is related to a family mystery that family members have tried to solve for years. Recently I thought I'd give it a try again. My great-great grandmother was said to have been born as Christina Pederson on 24 Jan 1873/1874 in Denmark. Supposedly her parents died when she was young and in 1885 she traveled to North Dakota, USA to live with relatives. These relatives were Iver and Christine (daughter of Peder and Frederikke Hansen) Madsen. Later she went to live with another uncle, Nels P. Hanson (originally Nils Pedesen - son of Peder and Frederikke Hansen). Christina was married in 1894 to Mike Mootz and died in North Dakota in 1971. As she called this people her aunts and uncles, I believe she was somehow a granddaughter of Peder and Frederikke Hansen. I just cannot figure out how. She did have contact with her relative Niels Pederson (born 1867 to Marie) and I thought perhaps it was her brother but it doesn't appear as if he had any siblings. I would love to finally know how my grandmother fits into this puzzle and who her parents were. I recently took an Ancestry DNA test and I share DNA with descendants of Peder and Frederikke Hansen through the Madsen family - I just cannot figure out how!

Hi
I have now located Peder and Fredrikke's passenger list from Copenhagen to New York in 1886 on the Geiser. On line 87. And low and behold I believe your Christina is with them. She is 11 years old which makes her born 1875 or so. A daughter Mathilda is also there too.

If you wonder what the 4-5 means in the column next to Christine (not her death anyway) read this link: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01h4k/

Thank you so much for finding this and clearing that up. I believe I may have come across this record before but was led to believe that the child had died on the voyage. This does indeed look like it could be my great-great-grandmother. If so, I believe she was traveling with her grandparents. I still have to find out if that is the case. I have yet to find a connection. Thanks again!

I have found that Inger Dorothea moved to Copenhagen in 1874 from Sweden.
I don't think Mathilde is their daughter.
The child Peter Mikkelsen with them could Mathilde"s son.

Hi again
Your post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=751991.0 got me going again.

Not proving easy though. I did find Hans Pedersen's (Hanson) passport application form online in North Dakota. He stated in 1924 that he was going to visit a brother in Sweden: Kristian. Also a brother and sisters in Denmark. I think the brother is Peder and the sisters must be Marie and Inger.

I have managed to find Inger Dorothea Petersen as the mother to Christine.

Here is Christine Fredrikke Elisabeth Petersen's birth record: http://ao.sa.dk/ao/data.ashx?bid=26720102

She was born 21 Jan 1873 in Copenhagen (København Vor Frue Sogn (Parish)) and christened 9 March 1873.

WOW! Thanks so much for all your hard detective work Ian. Your hunch in locating the link through Inger Dorothea was correct. Now to find what happened to Inger... Can anyone provide a good translation of this document? If what I'm seeing is correct, I don't see the name of a father listed? All her life Chrestina had been celebrating her birthday just a few days off, and we never knew her to use the names of Frederikke or Elisabeth. I have found an old picture that says on the back, "Chrestina's stepfather," so if that is correct than Inger Dorothea married at some time. Also, we were always told she came to the United States in 1886 after the death of her parents. Will be interesting to know more of the story. Attached is a photograph of Chrestina, who lived to be 98 years old. She was a tiny little woman, but a very hard worker, and everyone loved her.

You're welcome.
She was recorded as unmarried and her father's name (Inger's father that is) listed under hers as a "gardman" (I think).... a farmer.

I believe Inger was alive in 1924 when Hans visited Denmark.

The interesting thing is, I think, is that she was recorded as leaving Sweden in 1874. Christine was born in 1873 which I believe means that the father must be Swedish. I might be wrong but it does surely look like it.

Does it look like Inger was in Sweden when she became pregnant, and then went to Copenhagen to have the baby, and then back to Sweden for a short time before going back to Copenhagen?

All I can say is that Inger left for Copenhagen on 24 Nov 1874 - alone, according to the Church Books at least. There is no record of Christine in Sweden. So Christine must have been left with someone in Denmark. The minister only wrote one record of her leaving so she must have left and returned without the minister knowing of it.

The address given on Christine's birth record is: Larsbjørnsstræde 15,2.
Here is the address from the 1880 Census: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01i1i/

I went through the book and they weren't there unfortunately.
