Hello,
I'm trying to find which ship John Paterson came to NZ on. B.October 3, 1874, in Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, his father, Robert, was 47 and his mother, Ann (nee Wallace), was 36. He married Margaret McDonald on November 30, 1911, in Waverley, Taranaki. They had three children during their marriage. He died on August 6, 1959, in New Plymouth, Taranaki, at the age of 84, and was buried there.
So he lived in Waverley, and moved to Eltham. I am unable to find which ship he travelled on and when. He was in England in 1902 and was in Eltham 1908 but what happened in between I'm unsure of. Could any one help please? TIA
His cousins and possibly his nephew had moved to America and Canada. maybe he travelled there first? I wondered if he me a McDonald travelling and that could be what brought him to go to Waverley and meet Margaret? There is this... did he travel to New York age 30. did he met Alex McDonald on the ship (name next to his on list) and is that McDonald from Waverley? http://search.findmypast.com/record?id=tna%2fbt27%2f0395%2f00%2f0074%2fp%2f0001f&parentid=tna%2fbt27%2f0395000074%2f00024&highlights=%22%22
but my inexperience at this research means i'm not sure how to find out for sure.

Cheers Janette
He was a Farmer.... Also owned the horse and buggy business in Eltham until he retired to New Plymouth.
So... that link will not be him then. Cheers.
I think at death he had been here 55 years. So that brings him here about 1903 I think.

... also this one ?? ;)
1906 (arrived late February) - per "Corinthic" - London to Wellington.
Jno. PATERSON - 31 years (bc 1875) - single - Occupation: Farmer.
Nationality: "Ditto" (person above on list was English)
[Source: ancestry.com ]
[Recorded as "J. PATERSON" ( NZ Passenger lists at familysearch website) ]

Edited to add: re: Nationality: Sometimes this is not always strictly correct - especially if person had spent time in another county or country (i.e. doesn't always necessarily reflect "place of birth".)

... just noting also that the following article mentioned in respect of Immigrants per the "Corinthic" (February 1906), that the "farming class predominate".
[It's possible that a recruitment scheme was in place to bring farmers / farm workers, to particular districts / provinces ... immigrants probably had jobs to go to ? ]

Lucy2 and Brionne,
Thank you. He had been living in England near London. So that first one makes sense. I'm not sure he would have spelt his name with 2 't's but that could have been an error by the scribe at the time I'm sure.
He certainly would have claimed to be Scottish before English as all other records have him listed as Scottish, even in England.
So how now, do I know if that was him?
Thank you so much for your help! Kind regards

NZ is not really my domain, but a search for him in members trees on Ancestry might be worth a go.
Someone with an Ancestry sub will hopefully have a look for you.
Also Family Search have quite an extensive list of NZ incoming shipping records,[which is free]where i
found a later sailing August 1909 London to Wellington for the Paparoa. You may be lucky to find the earlier 1909 January sailing manifest on another website in NZ. Worth checking both NZ incoming records 1906 and 1909 sailings if you can.

Found this arrival for Mr J Patterson, age 34 Motor Engineer on 12 Mar 1909, Weliington.NZ.
arrived on the Paparoa from London. Single [but marked as English.]
Reference Family Search. L.D.S. just another suggestion for you. Cheers Brionne.

Hi ... you've said he was in Eltham 1908 ?? .... can you tell us where that info comes from please ?
If in NZ in 1908, then that would rule out the "J. PATERSON (PATTERSON)" passengers arriving in NZ around 1909 ... wouldn't it ? :D

Ohhh, I love how you challenge and question and make me check. So actually when I check my records, the earliest date I have him here is 1910 in Eltham.
I am a member of Ancestry, although I can not access entries for America or Canada. I have found that he lived near London until at least 1902 then I have lost his travels.
So... the 1909 shipping could be a possibility. :-)
Do you have any suggestions of what I look at next? Cheers

Another question ;D .... does the "55 years" come from his death certificate ??
So actually when I check my records, the earliest date I have him here is 1910 in Eltham.
* What is the source of this 1910 date ? [Voting roll, mention in newspaper ... ??? ]

I have no idea why I didn't get back to this directly. However this is how we know John Robert Paterson was in Eltham in 1910...
