Many thanks HALLMARK I'll give it a go

Why bother?
Just "let it run"
It will accumulate all incoming mail (mostly junk?)
If the isp realises that you are not using it they MAY disable/delete.
If not then, should you have forgotten something, the incoming mail will be there "?"?

Be sure to update any websites that you have registered with your yahoo address with your new one.
If for example (*cough*) you had registered on RootsChat with it, then you'll need to update it by going to
Profile > .Account Settings
All the best,

I seem to recall, when I closed my Yahoo email account, that somewhere in the small print it said that the account would be automatically suspended if it wasn't used for 90 days..............
???
Looking at the latest changes in the law, allowing governmental access to email accounts, I'm wondering whether we can actually delete a redundant account, or whether the messages have to be held for a specific time............?

Yes they are held by Legislation. If you look at the route of an email you'll find 3 satellites used for each email so if one dies the other has them... and if it dies they are on another.
