Title: James Geddes / Mary Sim
Post by: T.Donaldson on Sunday 17 July 05 20:34 BST (UK)
Hi

I am trying to find the pareantage of James Geddes my gt gt gt grandfather. Who ever put our Geddes tree on familysearch luckily only got his parents and birth date wrong. I have been in contact with 2 people who can verify without doubt that Alexander Geddes and Isobel Nobel were not his parents ( unless of course there was another couple with the same names but i haven't found them !). I have tried contacting the lady who now lives in Utah but to no avail.
It says he was born 26th Sept 1792 Fordyce Banff. Untrue, the 1841 census doesn't give birth place but puts his age at 40 (b/y 1801). The 1851 says Fordyce the age is hard to see as there is a ink smudge over it but it could be 69 or 56. By the time of the 1861 census he has died.
I have thrown a lot of money at scotlandspeople trying to find out about his death hoping it would have included his parents and wife but if it was before a certain date it wont give me that. I haven't found many people doing this line on the web and I'm hoping one of you are !

But James Geddes DID marry Mary Sim  15th March 1828 in Fordyce Banff. They had nine children all of whom i have information for. My line from them is Ann Geddes b 1844 then her daughter Lily Townlie Gray Geddes b 1883

Waiting in vain !

In the 1841 census only ages of adults over the age of 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so someone reported as 40 could have been aged between 40 and 45, so born sometime 1795 to 1801; equally, someone who was really 48, say, but gave their age as 45 would also be shown as 40 ......

In this case the 1851 reported age of 56 would result in a year of birth of 1794/95 ..........

Remember that the OPR info on scotlandspeople and available via IGI represents the records of the Established Church of Scotland that have survived to the present day, and by no means everyone was a member of the "Auld Kirk", as the Established Church of Scotland is often known.

The Auld Kirk records were supposed to include info on all parishioners, but it is rare to find records relating to dissenters and non-conformists.

Have a look at http://edina.ac.uk/statacc/ for the Old Statistical Account which will most likely list any dissenting churches in Fordyce and other surrounding parishes, - and be aware that is was not unknown for people to travel a few miles to a church of their choosing, and that might be across a parish boundary.

If there are such dissenting churches, then contact National Archives of Scotland (or look at their on-line catalogue, but note that this is still not complete) and/or contact the nearest library to ask their advice in terms of extant records for dissenting congregations ........

1792 is a potentially problematic year due to an 1783 Act which put a tax of 3d on every registration (repealed in 1794). This discouraged many people from making an OPR birth (baptism) or marriage (banns) registration, and there were even some ministers who refused to maintain their OPRs during this period as they regarded this Act and tax as an unacceptable intrusion into the affairs of the Kirk.

The only thing i can think of is to find his wife Mary,s grave and hope that they could have been buried together and that they have an inscribed headstone. Old Meldrum do have some old obits on microfiche which she said would take a long time to go through and research time would be expensive and as i live in Essex its not possible at the moment for me to go look myself otherwise i would be there like a shot. I have mailed Moray again (poor Graeme !)

MIs are indeed an option to be explored.

The largest collection in Scotland, published and unpublished, is held by the Scottish Genealogy Society (SGS) library in Edinburgh, but, not that long a distance from your location, the Society of Genealogists library in London has a collection of published, Scottish MIs not far behind that of SGS ............

I don't remember tkd but if so I think it would be about Welsh castles. I should have tried his old addy first. Somewhere in my loft I should have his booklet about the Sims -when I find it I will check it out for James and Mary.

Sorry I don't know the answer to that one but I see now he has books on for sale on Amazon. I used to correspond with him on Ancestry's, Banffshire pages and this is the only e-mail address I can find now.
I have a note to search for his Sim booklet next time I'm up in the loft. It was called "From Banff to Plymouth .The memorabilia of a nineteenth century sailor" by Paul Remfry published 1997.

Have you been in touch with Howard Geddes?  He is also searching for this couple - without success I think when last I heard.   Can probably put you in touch if you don't have his email address.

Mary Sim's sister Margaret was my GGG Grandmother by the way.

Hello Kath

There is someone else i think on here who has the same connection to you - Margaret Sim.

Ive had many long amusing chats with Howard, a very nice man.
Ive got no further proving James Geddes parents or his death date. I know of someone who is going to Gamrie in the near future and if he can is going to have a look.

Fingers crossed and its nice to come into contact with another distant relative.

I've just realised who you are!   We have been in touch before and you gave me the basics of your line so that I could see where you fit in.   I think you and Howard will just have to go to Fordyce with a shovel on this one.

So many of us still chasing your Mary SIM from Fordyce, tkd, and I'd hoped so much that Paul Remfry's work would hold the key but re-reading it I think you have been down this route before.

This is Mary b before 1749/50 at Fordyce 4th child of 6 listed for Margaret Young and John SIM.
Alas she married Peter BREMNER 13 May 1777.

I was in touch with a rootschat member "runner" whose e-mail I found in the excellent Port Gordon web site .
His line is GEDDES and I'd hoped but no luck there either.

As he says it might be useful to have a loook at the Family History part of the site - You never know - It's not so far along the coast - less than 20 miles - and you may recognise a relative to fit in with your search.

Reduce the URL to access the rest of the site.

Will keep your Fordyce couple in mind .
