Title: Shipping Lists 1879 John Elder - Arrived South Australia March from Plymouth
Post by: Joanne0669 on Sunday 14 February 16 01:00 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a shipping list for the John Elder that arrived in Adelaide March 1879.

I recently had a look at the recent SA Maritime Museum website and they list two of my ancestors on the John Elder that my research has led me to believe died in St. Heliers, Jersey years prior.

Their names were Georgina Hale & Ruth Hale. The rest of the family that DID come to SA were James Hale, Hedley Hale, Richard Hale, Ann Hale, Frederick Hale, Ernest Hale and Charles Hale and Ruth Hale (daughter).

Don't you hate it when you thought your research is 100% correct and something like this blows it out of the water. I've contacted the SA Maritime Museum but they haven't been able to advise where their info comes from.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...thank you!

Yes, the daughter was Ruth Elizabeth Hale. She ended up coming to Australia and died according to my research in 1941. Her mother was also Ruth Hale (nee Young) died in Jersey in 1866.

The list that is published has two Ruth Hales...so I'm assuming one is Ruth Elizabeth Hale.

Yep, only lists single males and none of the Hale family are on it. Although there is a H Male & a W Male?

The passenger list completed in January 1879 before the ship left London only has one Ruth HALE, aged 27 ticketed to Melbourne.  Other HALES onboard were Alice, 21, James, 54, Charles, 16, and Ernest, 14.  There is no further information recorded and these people were not necessarily related to each other, though the manifest is not in alphabetical order.

The two entries are for the same person, just two different lists.  The second list give James' occupation as Farmer and Ruth E. and Alice A. were travelling on the same ticket number while James and the younger children were travelling on a different consecutive ticket.

..... and Ruth Hale (daughter).

I don't really understand.  Who are you looking for?  Who is the 'Ruth HALE (daughter)' a daughter of?

..... John Elder that arrived in Adelaide March 1879.....

I recently had a look at the recent SA Maritime Museum website and they list two of my ancestors on the John Elder that my research has led me to believe died in St. Heliers, Jersey years prior.

Their names were Georgina Hale & Ruth Hale.

That database records them as being on the John Elder which departed London 15 July 1879 and arrived in South Australia on 27 August.

I've contacted the SA Maritime Museum but they haven't been able to advise where their info comes from.

So somebody went to all the trouble of compiling a database with no references.  Beggars belief really.

I have been through the whole departure manifest for that journey which includes passengers embarking at London, Plymouth and Cape Town and there are no HALEs onboard.

SA Records and SLSA hold

GRG 35/48/1 Official Assisted Passage Passenger Lists 1845 – 1886

I cannot find any HALE's on the JOHN ELDER at SA Records either.

A big thank you to those of you who have been kind enough to research and reply.

I've decided that this website is inaccurate and will ignore it

http://passengersinhistory.sa.gov.au/ (http://passengersinhistory.sa.gov.au/)

They have the Hale family as arriving in July not March. They somehow have two of the deceased Hales listed on the ship  - Ruth Hale (mother of Ruth Elizabeth Hale) and Georgina Hale.

I am going to refer them to the link that you provided Cando if that's OK in the hope that they will correct their records.

Thanks so much  :)

I don't get any ads on rootschat :-X.

I'm trying to find the arrival of the JOHN ELDER in Melbourne and Adelaide but TROVE is just 'sitting'...too many people using the free Telstra Mobile data today :P

The PROV passenger list is from the ship's manifest however if the JOHN ELDER sailed onto Adelaide then they more than likely did as well.  They were Unassisted Passengers anyway and details are scant.  Not required anyway by the shipping line.
