Looking for information about John Crawford a slater and chimney sweep who lived with a great aunt called Mary Morrison.
We don't have a lot of information. Apparently both were dead before 1925 when the old letter containing the information was written.
We reckon that John may have been born 1830-40 but this is purely guesswork.

mm.. could be them. Not aware of any family connection with those areas.
Wonder if they turn up in 1891, 1901 or 1911 censuses?

From the link that Ev posted, I think this is the family in 1871. No sign of John Crawford there at that time. Everyone showing as born in Glasgow:
Mary Crawford 27 Stater's Wife (likely a mistranscript of slater's wife)
John Crawford 3 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQQX-7LY
James Crawford 1 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQVJ-T5J
Niley Crawford 16 daughter
Address: Finlays Street, Kilsyth Stirlingshire
The Margaret showing as being born in 1872, father John is showing on FS as John James McEwan Crawford (may help with searches) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQDG-64C
Can't easily see a marriage for John and Mary. You could check any of the children's births to see what if anything is showing re the children and their parents' marrriage (date and place of marriage would normally be included if parents were married).

Again, as mentioned on the other thread that Ev has found, the family does look to be in Alloa for 1881. The transcript below:
Peter Canboy 34 hawker b. Ireland
Mary Canboy 26
Catherine Canboy 5
Peter Canboy 3
Mary Ann Canboy 6 Months
James Dawson 33 boarder
Frank Morrison 32 boarder
William Irvine 29 boarder
John Crawford 46 boarder slater b. Glasgow
John Crawford 14 boarder b. Glasgow
Mary Crawford 36 boarder b. Glasgow
Margaret Crawford 3 boarder b. Edinburgh (likely first Margaret b. 1872 died and name re-used)
Janet Gibson 38 boarder
Address: West Vennel, Alloa, Clackmannanshire
James b. 1869 may also have died as he doesn't show with familiy in 1881.

1871 - Kilsyth, Stirlingshire - FindMyPast shows that John was with Mary and the children too.
John Crawford 35 Slater
Mary Crawford 27
John Crawford 3
James Crawford 1
Lilley (?) Crawford 10 all shown born Glasgow
1881 - Boarders with a family named Canboy in Alloa, Clackmannanshire
John Crawford 46 Slater born Glasgow
Mary Crawford 36 Housekeeper born Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire
John Crawford 14 Schoolboy born Glasgow
Margaret Crawford 3 born Edinburgh
According to the birth certificates of John (b.17/10/1867 Glasgow), James (b.8/11/1869 Glasgow) and Margaret (b.6/5/1878 Edinburgh) their parents were John Crawford, a Slater (Journeyman) and Mary Morrison - different marriage date on each one which are 19/1/1867, 4/2/1867 and 19/1/1866 all in Glasgow!!! However, there is no marriage on SP or familysearch between a John Crawford and a Mary Morrison anywhere around this period.
So, John Crawford is born ca.1835 Glasgow BUT with no marriage found to Mary Morrison no idea who his parents were, nor hers of course. Being a slater journeyman meant he had to travel around and obviously his family went with him.
The only slater I can find in 1891/1901 - this time living in Dumfries - matches John's details but the wife with him is named Margaret (Maggie) - Mary could have died and he remarried but impossible to trace in deaths index because Crawford is such a common name and they constantly moved around. Even trying to find John's death after 1901 is difficult - no likely John dying in Dumfries either.
Best I can do.

I loose track of family after 1881 :-\
Annette, was thinking about the daughter from 1871:
Mary Crawford 27 Stater's Wife (likely a mistranscript of slater's wife)
John Crawford 3 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQQX-7LY
James Crawford 1 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQVJ-T5J
Niley Crawford 16 daughter b. Glasgow
Address: Finlays Street, Kilsyth Stirlingshire
As you can see, a/try have her recorded differently.
Given the age of Mary Morrison, maybe John Crawford had a first marriage before he and Mary got together?
Niley ( :-\ as transcribed by a/try) maybe Nelly for Helen/Ellen etc www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=nelly
Closest I could see in 1861 was this:
John Crawford 28 Cartier (carter?) b. Parisley (Paisley?)
Nelen Crawford 27 b. Glasgow
Nelen Crawford 7 b. Glasgow, Pert (Port Glasgow?)
Joseph Crawford 3 b. Greenock https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F73P-GR9
Address: 31 St Heman St, Hutchesontown, Glasgow/Govan
Other than Hutchesontown being in the right place for the later births for John with Mary Morrison, no idea if this above connects. Just including in case we find further details later.

ADDED: Re the family I posted for 1861, these look to be details on daughter Helen http://pioneerancestry.com/getperson.php?personID=I9190&tree=Francom

Thank you all very much fo your efforts and posts. We have a lot to think about.
The names of children is new to us.
-
Another thought. This daughter Niley aged 16 in 1871. Maybe she was born in 1855. I must try and see if she is on SP for that year
-
Does the letter give a location?
Does the letter state that John Crawford was married to Mary Morrison or just living with her?
Do you have names of any of their siblings?
Do you have the parents names of Mary Morrison?
-
Hi Sancti
Nothing about location, relationship or children.
-
and nothing about parents names
-
What is the nature of the letter and what is the connection of the writer to John and Mary?
-
ordinary correspondence about 1970 from one of aunts to another. None of them are Crawford's or Morrison's
-
In the 1901 census (Ancestry) there is a John C Crawford, Slater, born 1852 in England living at 29a Cameron Street, Glasgow wife wife Mary ( born Ireland) and some children. The 1911/12 Glasgow postal directory lists him still at that address and described as a Slater and Chimney Sweep.

Hi
Had a long chat to my other relative helping with research. According to her John Crawford and Mary Morrison must have died between 1881 - 1925.
We know they are in census for 1881 - but nothing after that. 1925 is mentioned because it says they died in some family letters from that time. Sadly, the letters do not mention when or where they died.
I searched SP and cannot find any trace. There are names but it is difficult to trace either of them.
