Title: Who is Ana?
Post by: sami on Friday 12 February 16 17:33 GMT (UK)
Help please with this witness signature in an 1764 marriage register.

The bride and groom names were Hinckes and Elton so it doesn't seem like either of those names.

I've been wondering if it is - Ana Thelo.

All suggestions welcome - I see someone else was also wondering who the witness was  ;D

Tricky. Could you post a bigger extract, so that we can see how the letters compare?

Thanks

Mike

Yes very difficult and it looks as if someone has written "Who?" after it or was that a recent addition.

It might be worth looking at records for some time before and after, in case she witnesses another marriage or indeed marries herself.

Thank you for your replies  :)

Mike: I've attached a bigger post but not sure if it will help much since this was the witnesses own signature.

3sillydogs: Yes, not sure when that was done. Funny to think of someone else wondering about it.

Lizdb: Good idea - I haven't seen anything earlier than 1764 but I'll look through the years following to see if another name like that turns up.

Bleco? Possibly a variation or misspelling of Blacow or similar :-\

Maybe - I've looked through the register from 1764 to 1769 and haven't seen a similar signature or name. But there was a - John Brisco - entry. Made me wonder if the surname was Brisco or similar to that.

I'll keep looking  :)

The long name is the surname, followed by Thos - Thomas.  I can't work out what the surname is though.

I think Brisco is a strong contender.

Well, I've gotten as far as 1774 in the register and haven't seen anything else that might be the same name.

Sargie: I had wondered if it was all one first name, something like Anabell with no surname added. But eventually decided it was two names with someone else writing - Who? - at a later time.

So for now I'll leave it as Brisco / Bleco / Blacow. I'll post again if I come across it later in the marriage register.

Thank you for all your help everyone  :)
