Title: still born babies
Post by: jupiter1 on Sunday 07 February 16 01:38 GMT (UK)
Hi Team,
If a child was still born in the 1900 - 1905 period would it have been recorded in the BDM registers or somewhere else or recorded at all ?
Cheers.

ps What if it were still born out of wedlock

pps what if it was alive for a "very short"  time and then died

I believe both birth and death would be registered if the baby was born alive but died shortly after. I think it may have been different for still births. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Have you checked Freebmd for a birth/death registered in the mother's surname if you believe the baby was illegitimate?

If you are willing to give the names someone may be able to help you locate it.

Thanks to all.
I have dredged through the BMD's it seems for ever in both the maiden and married surname.
Unfortunately both surnames are prone to several variations.
The information given to me was that this girl "died very young", the word very was emphasized.
I have been hunting this wee girl for about 12 years now without success.
The mother was liberal with her favours so there could well have been a third man.
I have even considered the idea that this woman may have been baby sitting the child for a relation.
Needless to say I am about to give up.

I appreciate all the help you have given me on this matter.
Many thanks.

Have you already asked for help with this specific birth and death? Having a quick look at your previous posts I note there are several regarding illegitimacies - is this query related to one of them?

If it is a new query, start a new thread in the Common Room giving all the detail you can and I'm sure someone will try to help you.

Yes, but this is the first time that I have considered a still birth or a death immediately after birth.
The earlier queries were for different scenarios, teenage pregnancy, adulterous birth etc.
Thanks.

Sorry, my last reply was not to clear.

I haven't gone back and checked all my posts but I would bet that most if not all are for this little girl.
I have been looking for her on and off since about 1995.

The only info that I have is....
Name Victoria, know as Vickie: Born and died in Bethnal Grn area: Family story "died very young".
This told to me from family member aged about 60 in 1945.
I have searched all the family surnames (5 of them and plus several variants), for Victoria's and come up empty handed.
If the rabbit doesn't pop out of the hat soon I will give up.
I would prefer to go do a different type of fishing  :-)
Cheers, and thanks.

Since found out that still births were not registered until 1926 or so.

Have you looked for a burial?

That sounds more to me as if she lived long enough to "use" the name, rather than being given a name after being still born.

Not neccesarily?!

My mother had a twin sister, stillborn.
It was 1931, so I have the stillbirth certificate.

There are no forenames on a stillbirth certificate, but the sister was known as Margaret.
Obviously, this isn't on any document (that I have found).

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't very clear, I wasn't so much thinking about the fact she had been named, but more to the statement "Known as Vickie"

And that's exactly what I was getting at! ;D

My aunt was known as Margaret - but that name doesn't exist on official documents.
Perhaps it's a similar case with Vickie?

Thanks.

Interesting to read & I wonder when this changed or if it has (in England)?

In Scotland (now) the child's name is entered on the death cert. but I don't know when this began although possibly 1965 as it has on the cert. "Extract of an entry in a Register of Still-Births. Kept under the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Scotland) Act 1965"

It's still the case in England & Wales.
I obtained my copy within the last 2 years, so I know what fields are on it. ;D

Surely though your certificate refers to a still birth years ago, KG and so the information given then would be on it? Thankfully it does look as if it has changed for babies that are still born now

You will receive these documents after registration
A certificate for burial or cremation
- this is required by the funeral director
A certificate of registration
- this certificate is proof of registration and shows the date of the still-birth and any names given to the child
A still-birth certificate
- a certified copy of all the details held in the register is also available

The certificate I have is dated 2013. I have it in front of me now.

"Certified Copy of an Entry of Still-Birth"

Column 1: When and where born
Column 2: Sex
Column 3: Name and Surname of father
Column 4: Name, surname and maiden name of mother
Column 5: Occupation of father
Column 6:Signature, description and residence of informant
Column 7: When registered
Column 8: Cause of death and evidence that child was still-born
Column 9: Signature of Registrar

As I said - no space for name of the child.

But isn't that a copy of the original certificate issued when your mother's sister died? I'll ask my friend who lost a baby 3 years ago.

The certificate I have is dated 2013.
As I said - no space for name of the child.

I find that shocking in this day & age.

Surely the parents should have the right to name their child & have it listed.

I thinks us scots are lucky in that respect.

The one I have is 2014

Annie

ADDED...KG, Sorry, do you mean the event happened 1931 & that's the copy you have dated 2013?

I thought you meant a recent stillbirth in 2013 had no space for name

The copy I have is for the event (stillbirth) occuring 2014 with baby's name on it

I've just heard from my friend who had a still birth in 2012 in England and she said that there is now a space for the baby's full names. I'm glad that they now do that to recognise the birth.
