Hello,
not sure where I should post this request, I am stuck and don't know where to look next.
I am looking for Charles Maurice Terry who is listed as father of Harry Charles Cooper Terry on his marriage certificate. The marriage was in Ashford, Kent in October 1901. The certificate lists Charles's occupation as 'engine driver'
Harry was living in Chatham at the time.
So far I have not been able to find him on any census. There are a lot of Terrys to choose from :-(
Any suggestions on where to look next would be greatly appreciated.
Ian.

Hello,
Someone has corrected the 1891 entry for Harry Terry at 1891 698/36/4 and added that it is Harry Charles Cooper Terry.
He was born Egerton, Kent abt 1875 according to census but the date is amended to 16 March 1874.
His parents are Richard and Charlotte.
Does this sound familiar?
Who did your Harry marry? Do you have them in 1911?
Regards
Heywood

Hi Heywood,
thank you. It doesn't sound familiar but I've not been able to find much so far.
Harry Married Rose Kate Austen, he was 24 when they married in 1901.
I have Henry (Harry) and Rose in 1911 with children that tie in. Occupation of farrier ties in as well.
I don't have Charles in 1911.

There is a birth reg for Henry Charles Cooper Terry Medway O-D 1876 2a 510. There is also a birth for Charles Maurice C Terry Milton J-M 1882 2a 897.
I think they may be brothers and this is their family on the 1891 census :
Maurice Terry 43 head b Bermondsey
Henrietta Terry 37 wife
Charles Terry son b 1882 Sittingbourne ( fits the Milton registration)
Henry Terry son b 1877 Gillingham ( fits the Medway registration)
other siblings listed but no time now.
Maurice TERRY m Henrietta COOPER Medway J_S 1870 2a 611
The only fly in the ointment is Maurice is a stoker in a chemical works , not an engine driver !
( NB - edited Henry's birth year as I made a mistake last night ! )

That sounds better.
There is a Harry Terry who married Annie and I think whoever has amended that census entry has the two mixed up.
Your man is Henery, I think in 1911.

Thank you all for your help.
I hadn't expected to see Bermondsey appear at all.
What is the best way of proving this or reducing uncertainty?
Ian.

There is a Royal Navy record for Maurice Terry born 05.11.1843 Bermondsey:

Harry and Henry are more or less interchangeable ( Prince Harry being a prime example) so I am sure the birth registration I gave for Henry Charles Cooper Terry is your man. His birth certificate would confirm his father's name and address . It looks like Henrietta Terry died O-D 1891 Medway 2a 363 and I'm not sure what happened to Maurice after that. It may be that there was confusion over the father's name on Harry's marriage certificate. I think the combination of Cooper Terry names is quite convincing but the birth certificate could be very informative.

Re Maurice Terry there is a likely Civil Service Evidence of Age record for him , dated 1873 , which implies he may have been Catholic and gives parents William and Ellen. See FindMyPast for this.

Thank you all for your help. I will investigate further.

William (29) and Ellen (26) Terry are in Bermondsey in 1851 with their children "Mariah" 5, John 3 and William 1, plus William's sister in law Eliza Goddard.
I wonder whether the enumerator made an error in copying over the entries into the summary schedule, inadvertently turning son Maurice into daughter Mariah?

CB53, I wonder if you can point me at the 1891 census record please?
Using find my past I can find the 1881 record but not the 1891.

Hi,
I realise it has been a couple of years since this thread was active but thought I would give it a go. Are you still researching the Terrys? The names you have mentioned are linked with 'my' Terrys who originated (at least at one point) in Bermondsey. I have been in touch with a newly discovered cousin who can confirm this from conversations with his parents and grandparents (grandmother a Terry).
If you are still researching and are interested in doing so, I would love to know what you have come up with.
Regards.
