My grandfather Harrold Selle of Hull was in business as a Coal merchant around 1900. His premises were at Witham. He later changed career and worked on he Docks eventually becoming a Superintendent. He and his wife and daughter ( my mother Jessica Selle) lived in Nornabell Street off Holderness Road. Later when my mother married they moved to Hull Road Anlaby. I would be interested to know if there is anyone alive who has any knowledge of this family.

What were you wanting to know? There are lots of people on here who wont be related who are willing to help.
Is he the person who is actually Percy Harold Selle, wife Caroline, dying 1966?
Aged 11 in 1901, father Joseph Selle, also a coal merchant. Father died 11 April 1934

Hello,
I know very little of my mothers side of the family other than my Grandfather's name. My late mother, Jessica Selle had an unusual middle name ( Bradshaw) and I'm intrigued to know the significance ( if any) of this name.
Both my mothers parents died when I was a child and my mother hardly ever spoke about them or where they came from. All I know is that I'm fairly sure my Grandfather was born in the Southcoats region of Hull.
-
When was your late mother born?
I did look for a birth of Jessica Selle - to try and tie in with the Percy Harold Selle I found, with the wife Caroline, etc etc , but had no success.
I will look again with the Bradshaw bit, maybe she was born a Bradshaw. First step is to get her birth cert, I think, to be sure of your grandparents names.

To pin down some dates:
Jessica B Selle married Charles H Uebel in Hull in 1938.
Jessica Bradshaw Uebel born 29 Nov 1910 death reg Aug 1997 Beverley.
-
I got that far too, but no birth of a Jessica Selle with mums maiden name Hailstone
(aha - red writing, as avm has posted. Those dates will be useful)
-
It is not looking as if she was the child of the Percy Harold and Caroline nee Hailstone, as their first child who survived infancy was born after 1911.
Have you got your parents marriage cert? If so, who does Jessica name as her father on it?
If not, this might be the place to start.
-
Nickuebel, can you tell us the source of such information as is known re the coal merchant based at Witham? Percy Harold Selle was not in business as a coal merchant "around 1900" as he was only born in 1889, and was with his parents aged 11 in 1901.
He does seem to have been dealing in coke by the 1920s, though:

Oh hang on a minute. In the 1901 census with Joseph and Sarah Selle at 483 Hessle Rd (parents of Percy) were three BRADSHAW stepchildren - William 23, Harry 19, Mary 18 - all born Hull.
-
So, maybe Harry Bradshaw took on the name Selle ...... and married x and had Jessica etc etc?
-
1911 look ups aren't allowed.
Finding Harry Bradshaw in 1911 may well be the way to go, to see if he has a baby called Jessica or similar.
-
Joseph Selle married Sarah Everett Bradshaw, Dec qtr 1888 Sculcoates - hence the Bradshaw youngsters (including Harry) being his stepchildren.
-
There's a birth registration for Jessie Bradshaw in Sculcoates, Mar qtr 1911.
Yorkshirebmd shows that the birth was registered in the Drypool subdistrict (covering Witham).
-
Sarah Selle dies 1919 at 36 South Cliffe Rd, Withernsea, Joseph Selle dies 1934 at Calvert Rd, Kingston upon Hull
Both left Wills - this info from Probate index.
Havent spotted Harry's death as yet .... just far too many Harry Bradshaw's born around 1881ish to narrow it down.
-
Got it!! He has changed to Selle by then!
Death

And he has either married Annie Curtis, or she has now taken the name of Selle too

Wow, they left marriage very late! Maybe Annie's husband had not died till then, so she was not free
Marriage

(we are on the same track avm - posts crossed again)

I think Annie may be the Annie nee ROBINSON who married Albert Hamlet CURTIS Mar qtr 1901 Sculcoates.
He seems to have died as Hamlet CURTIS in Driffield on 9 Aug 1958 (aged 82), which of course would have left Annie free to remarry. If so, she got on with it promptly!
-
And why not, if they had been waiting for over 40 years!!!

And why not, if they had been waiting for over 40 years!!!
Quite :D
-
From a free search of the 1939 Register index it looks as though Harry & Annie Selle are likely to have been with the newly(ish)wed Uebel couple.

There is a lot here for Nickuebel to take in, when he is next online, so in a way I am loathe to take it further till he has had a chance to catch up.
However, the initial enquiry was about Harrold Selle, (who we have now discovered was actually Harry Bradshaw) so I thought Id put up the 1901 census, where Harry was found, with a view to going backwards to find his parentage (we know his mum was Sarah who remarried to Joseph Selle)
1901
483 Hessle Road
Joseph Selle 36 coal merchant bn Hull
Sarah 48 wife bn Doncaster
Percy 11 bn Hull
William Bradshaw 23 step son bn Hull
Harry Bradshaw 19 step son bn Hull
Mary Bradshaw 18 step dtr bn Hull
Going back 10 years we find:
1891
51 Manchester Street,Newington, Yorkshire
Joseph 26 coal dealer bn Hull
Sarah 38 bn Doncaster
Lizzie Bradshaw 16 step dtr bn Hull
William Bradshaw 13 step son bn Hull
Lilly Bradshaw 11 step dtr bn Hull
Harry Bradshaw 10 step son bn Hull
Mary Bradshaw 8 step dtr bn Hull
Percy Selle 1 son bn Hull
Joseph Selle 1 mth bn Hull
And back to 1881
82 Manchester Street Newington
William Everett Bradshaw 30 fireman bn Lincolnshire Brigg
Sarah 28 wife bn Doncaster
Sarah E 6
William E 3
Lilly 1 children bn Hull.
This must have been just before Harry's birth.
Birth
Apr/May/Jun 1881
Sculcoates
ref 9d 150
Harry Bradshaw
Death Jan/Feb/Mar 1883
Sculcoates
ref 9d 114
William Everett Bradshaw
age 32
So Harry was only 2 ish when his father died, and only 7 ish when his mum remarried. So his step dad Joseph Selle would very much have been the father figure he knew.

Thanks for the pm,
So, having established that your grandfather was Harry Bradshaw (later used name Selle), and that his parents (your great grandparents) were William Everitt Bradshaw and Sarah, you were interested in what happened to Harry's siblings. So far, from the censuses, it appears he had siblings:
Full siblings (Bradshaws) :-
Sarah bn 1875ish
William bn 1878ish
Lizzie bn 1880ish
(then there is Harry bn 1881)
Mary bn 1883ish
Half siblings (Selles): -
Percy bn 1890ish
James bn 1891 ish
We found out that Percy Selles married Caroline Hailstone, earlier in the thread.
I think this is William's marriage -
Apr/May/JUn 1902
Hull
ref 9d 435
William Everitt Bradshaw / Louisa or Laura Cole.
You may like to buy some credits to view 1911 (or go to a local library who often have free access) as, as has been said before, we are not allowed to do look ups.
This looks very likely to be a son of his! :
Birth
JUl/Aug/Sep 1909
Sculcoates
ref 9d 171
William Everitt Bradshaw
I wonder about this as a possible marriage for Lizzie:
Marriage
Ap/May/Jun 1910
Sculcoates
ref 9d 221
Lizzie Bradshaw / either Albert Edward Broughton or Charles Frederick Kauffman
Hope this has got you started with tracing your great aunts and great uncles forwards. Have a look at www.freebmd.org yourself, or the 1911 census, and you may find out more in due course.
Births in the index after 1911 have mothers maiden name in the index, so once you have established marriages for each person, you may be able to find possible births for children. Though remember, in cases of a second marriage, it wont work, as mothers maiden name will not be the surname she married in. I say this as I have my suspicions Laura Louisa Cole who married William may have been married before!

Joseph Selle married Sarah Everett Bradshaw, Dec qtr 1888 Sculcoates - hence the Bradshaw youngsters (including Harry) being his stepchildren.
Joseph Selle is listed here as a Coal Dealer and Dairyman at 51, Manchester Street, Hessle Road in 1892:
Also Thomas Selle General Dealer at 36 Daltry Street, Hull
