Title: How to research private adoptions in New York City from 1925

I hired Omni-Trace to track down my mother's adoption in New York City in March of 1925.  All they came up with is information that a 22 yr. old single, white woman gave birth and gave up her parental rights. My mother was then adopted by a couple in Philadelphia.  Omni Trace said it was a private adoption, not through an agency.  Am I at a dead end?  Apparently New York law doesn't allow the release of any additional information.

Yes.  The birth certificate was actually issued in 1944, although she was born in 1925.  It indicates she was born in New York City in Plaza Hospital on March 24, 1925.  It has a birth record number and a designation "Special" typed after the number.

I seem to recall hearing about adoptees checking the birth index in New York City to see if there's a match for the day they were born.  This message board thread talks about it - https://adoption.com/forums/thread/373239/new-york-city-birth-certificate-index-search-story/

I'm an adoptee, and I found my birth father's family through autosomal DNA testing through ancestry.com.  So maybe that's something worth considering if the paper trail leads nowhere.
