Florence Fraser Kirkman was born to John (Publican) and Sophia Kirkman in Mile End on 29 January 1881. She married John Rothwell Haslam in Northampton 10 June 1918 (where her father was named as George - a mechanical Engineer-deceased). However, I can find no trace of Florence or her parents in any UK Census, shipping or other online records. Please. any ideas on where they may have been or where else I can look for them would be greatly appreciated?

There is no marriage showing for a John or George Kirkman to a Sophia pre-1881
Presume you have a copy of the 1881 birth cert - what was Sophia's maiden name?
-
Sophia Kirkman married Peter Richard Jessup in 1884 - marriage cert shows her as a spinster - no fathers names against either of them - both just shown as dead. Neither witness is a Kirkman or a Jessup
1891 reference here - Florence is transcribed as Kukman aged 13yrs b Mile End and she is shown as niece. Age on image is 10 - not 13

Wow, CaroleW, that was fast. Yes, I do have the birth certificate and Sophia's maiden name was Kirkman, so she did not have to re-embroider her handkerchiefs. I'll follow up on your 1891 ref - many thanks for that.

There is a death for Peter Richard Jessup in 1896 in Norfolk and Sophia is in Buckinghamshire in 1901 but only with the 3 Jessup children and 2 lodgers

Sophia re-married in 1903 in Bucks to either Samuel Punter or William Leonard Cannon

I think this is Florence in 1901 as a boarder in Kensington occ drapers assistant - shown as b Bow Essex RG13 Piece 19 Folio 64 Page 65

Yes, CaroleW, I found the 1901 entry and it does look promising - this Florence appears again as a drapers assistant in the 1911 census, but the birth address is stated only as 'London' - getting closer, methinks. Not sure about Sophia, though...she may have been Flo's mother using John's name without marriage being in the picture. I just need something to connect the jigsaw pieces. I really appreciate your input - thanks.

She married John Rothwell Haslam in Northampton 10 June 1918 (where her father was named as George - a mechanical Engineer-deceased).
I wonder if she used her grandfathers name
Take a look at the 1881 entry for Sophia Kirkman b 1862 Bethnal Green parents George & Emma. George is an engine fitter
The middle name of Fraser does not appear on Florence's birth reg or any census entry - only on her marriage.
When and where did she die as I can't find a death reg with that middle name matching to her birthyear?
I'm wondering why the Fraser suddenly appeared in 1918.

Well, CaroleW, I have followed up all the leads and I am quite sure Florence was the Draper's Assistant in the census for 1901 and1911. I am also fairly sure that her mother was Sophia Kirkman, daughter of George and Emma Kirkman. Beyond those points I think the rest is reasonable speculation, while the 'John' of Flo's birth certificate remains a mystery. It may have been a name substituted for the real father - I agree with you that she may have used her grandfather on her marriage certificate. Still no clue as to the origin of 'Fraser'. All good fun sifting through the possibilities though, and I have appreciated your input - thanks again.
