Title: Patons in Co Sligo
Post by: Trishmcc23 on Wednesday 27 January 16 02:43 GMT (UK)
Searching for any information on John Paton born around 1805 in County Sligo.   He came to NSW Australia and died in Molong NSW.   He had a son James P K Paton.  Names of his parents etc. would be appreciated. Thank you. Trish

John Paton was born well before the start of civil registration in Ireland and it's also quite early for records of most churches so there might be little detail on him here (let alone his parents).

In order to see if church records do exist then you'll need to know the family's religion at that time and where they lived (parish if not actual townland).

Have you checked Australian records for clues? marriage and death certificates, assisted passenger lists (as was found on another query of yours), etc.

Thank you for replying.  I have checked BDM lists which is where I have found most of the details for them.  I am really happy I have been able to find what I have through your site.  I do not have a date as to when he may have come to Australia and shipping lists do not appear to give a lot of information.  I am fairly new to this research and perhaps I am missing something else I should be doing.

Newspaper articles sometimes mention Irish origins, other relatives, etc.- have you searched here?
http://trove.nla.gov.au/

The first one I found was John Paton's death announcement-
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/71201990?searchTerm=paton%20molong&searchLimits=l-category=Family+Notices

The AUSTRALIA board will have stickied reference topics at the top of the board which cover resources in New South Wales and all the country.

Added- try convict records  ;)

Just went to the site.  Yes I do have that information, in fact I am planning a trip to Molong as there are lots of Patons in the area.  Our history goes back a fair way in that area.  On re reading your message I had to chuckle at the convict reference.  Are you intimating something I may not know as yet?  We are what we are and I certainly can't change it if that is the case. I tried to put a smiley but it didn't work.

Well, if he's the one from Sligo that married Elizabeth Aull then yes he was a convict.

Now I am really laughing.  I now have a convict in the family and yes he is the one who married Elizabeth Aull..  Maybe there are many more to come.
Thank you aghadowey.

Dathai - found John Paton Alias: Patton            Irish Rebel:           Religion: Catholic       Age on arrival: 21
Marital status: Single
Calling/trade: Stable man labourer
Born: 1806        Native place: Sligo
Tried: 1827      York England          Sentence: Life     Former convictions:
Ship: John I (1) (1827)
Crime: House breaking

Wondering now how to find court records and whether they might show more details on his native place such as town etc.

Thanks.
Trish

Hello how great to hear from someone who is also related to John Paton.   Unfortunately I am no closer to finding anymore information not for want of trying.  He was my g g grandfather.  Are you related on your paternal or maternal side.   My g grandmother, Nancy Butler was married to James Paton who was a son of John Paton and Elizabeth Aull (Hall).
How lovely that you are going to Molong, I am trying to get there .  My Nan, Letitia Gad Walsh (Paton) was born there.  I want to go  to see where she grew up and see if I have any relatives still living there.   Peter Butler and his wife Ann also my g g grandparents lived on a farm at The Gap.
With regards to John, I have found lots of information on him in Australia but have not been able to track him back any further than the trial in York.  No luck in Sligo at all.
Kind regards
Trishmcc23

Hello Trish
I have had a chance to have another look and I can dig out all sorts of stuff including his life in York, his conviction etc > It would be best to email it to you . They recommend that you dont post email details on this site so I dont know how you could send it to me . Perhaps a message via my facebook page? I am Andrew Richards of Melbourne on fb.
Cheers
BTW, you have a third convict as Elizabeth's parents were both convicts.. Is that good news or bad!!??

Hi guys, I've landed here as I'm a Paton in Australia researching my family tree and John Paton born 1806 from Sligo is also my ancestor. I see that Andrew replied "I have had a chance to have another look and I can dig out all sorts of stuff including his life in York, his conviction etc" but I am unable to message Andrew direct because I've only just signed up as a member here, and the ability to PM other members is limited. If you see this message Andrew (or anyone) I'd love to learn more about Johns life before he came to Australia.

Andrew hasn't logged into Rootschat since 2017. If you make one more post you'll be able to send a Personal Message (be sure to send a link to this topic to jog his memory). Fingers crossed for a response  :)

i think that i have some more information, see attached.
I recall, after about ten years that i couldnt find anything about Paton's birth, early life in Sligo, nor his work in yorkshire; I presumed he was a navvy.
Some stuff i found about the trial and later escape from York prison.. but local newspapers would reveal more
I found and visited he and wifes grave in ?Molong

Thanks again Andrew. I really appreciate it. I live in Tamworth, about 4.5hr drive from Molong. One of these days I'll make a trip down there to visit the grave myself.

Also, Andrew. From what I have found out it seems that his initial sentence was death, which might explain why he attempted to escape. And I've also found that he had no prior convictions. So a sentence of death for stealing clothes or a comb does seem a bit harsh. But, they were diferent times.
