Happy Australia Day from Scotland.
Wish we had a National Day here that we could celebrate with a free bacon and egg brekkie :'( :'(
Well it is Burns Night here (25th January) Haggis, Neeps, Tatties and Whisky.
Enjoy your day in the sunshine.

Happy Australia Day from me too. Just relaxing today, and later cooking some lamb on the bbq.
I used to celebrate Burn's night years ago, which was a lot of fun, but no one likes haggis so I don't bother any more.

This has to be one of my favourite Seekers songs, truly captures what it means to be Australian. Love it! If anyone hasn't heard the song/watched the video make sure you do!

I agree. I also like True Blue by John Williamson
Along with
Great Southern Land - Icehouse
Sounds of Then (This is Australia) - Gangajang
Solid Rock - Goanna
Old Man Emu - John Williamson (actually my favourite singer of Oz Songs and songs of Oz)
Down Under - Men At Work - (while great , doesn't inspire emotion as much as some others)
And many more
-
Waltzing Matilda has to be another of my favourites- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwvazMc5EfE

Then there's this one, for those of us of a certain age.....

We celebrated Burns Night last night [OH is Scottish] and now Australia Day today! Happy Australia Day everyone :)
I forgot to order a haggis for last night and the local Scottish butcher had run out [son-in-law cheered when he heard that] so we had black pudding, neeps and square sausages -OH hadn't heard of them as a traditional Scottish dish ;D but the butcher assured me that they were.
-
No Haggis and neeps for me thanks Rosball! But I did listen to an old tape I have of a relative narrating some of Burns' poetry.
One of my favourites - Holly Willie's Prayer!
Wish we had a Scottish butcher here, not for haggis, but for good old fashioned steak pie, my steak pie doesn't taste anything like my Mum's! ???
Had some when I was in Scotland last year, YUM! With Mashed tatties, not bashed neeps 😀 No different spices etc, just good old steak and onion!
-
The Scottish butcher had a big selection of very deep tempting pies available - that would have been a better choice than the square sausages but I didn't think of steak pies as very Scottish ...?
I do love the haggis which you buy in Scottish fish and chip shops - onions and mixed herbs added. :) The haggis that they serve in Edinburgh restaurants is probably more traditional and is pleasant but seemed rather bland to me.
-
Oh yes, the Scots certainly enjoy their steak pies! Some of them don't have any bottom pastry, and have chopped linkies (sausages) in them, sometimes with a few carrots, as my Mum and Nan made, and like the ones I had had when I recently stayed with family in Ayrshire,
Maybe this type are more specific to Ayrshire, but I don't really know. I only know I love them!
-
I'll know for next time then Jeanne :) I'm sure the whole family would have enjoyed them :)
Are you sure you don't have a local Scottish butcher? Well I mean one who specialises in Scottish food? There seems to be one every other suburb here (as well as Scottish butchers who are just local butchers and don't do anything particularly Scottish). I bet if you searched you would find many of them.
By the way (in case you are wondering ;D) square sausages are a rectangular mince patty of very finely minced meat - it looks like it has been sliced from a large square "loaf" of meatloaf. Perhaps I should google it and find out more...
The family enjoyed it ... but then it kept on being "enjoyed" during the evening. ;D

Sadly Ros, we have very few butchers these days! Let alone one who specialises in Scottish food! Probably in Dunedin in the South Island - a very Scottish place, where a lot of people still even speak with Scottish Accents, and others with a burr in their speech! Big numbers of Scottish settlers and teachers came there in the early days, from Scotland and Ireland, and I have read that the youngsters they taught finished up with very a interesting Irish/Scottish accent which can still be heard in the area.
As for butchers, it's mostly supermarkets and a chain called the Mad Butcher, whose meat is good and prices very reasonable! Better than the supermarket! Everything there of course pre packed, and they don't do the lovely things that the butchers in UK do.
In some of the country areas, yes, selling locally sourced stuff, when I go to my sons to visit, I usually stock up on a few things and freeze. The two closer real butchers to where I live are about a half hour drive away - one is very continental, Austrian people, and the other Kiwi!
Both good, but very expensive. They do make some small goods, but not PIES! Bakery ones not wonderful either - also expensive, for a few pieces of meat swimming in gravy! But I guess I've been spoiled!
Your square sausage sounds like a meat loaf I make - half sausage meat and half mince, chopped onion, salt, milk and egg. Then shaped and baked in a yummy barbecue sauce. Lovely hot or cold!
Now I feel like making a meat loaf - haven't done one for ages! 😄
-
Well it turned out that we had lovely sunny cool weather for a BBQ. But unfortunately the forecast had implied that there would be rain and a storm so I thought it best to avoid a BBQ. Yes yet another poor decision on my part ... :(
I bet everyone else enjoyed a lovely barbie :)
-
We capped off our Australia Day with cheese and vegemite toasties for tea. :)
-
To all my family and friends "down under", hope you had a good one today. :) :) :) :)
-
I've never heard of a Scottish butcher (none in my city that I'm aware of) - you are so lucky Ros. :)
Scotch pies are something a little different from 'normal' pies:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch_pie
The Triple J 100 countdown was blaring in my house most of Australia Day, so I did some gardening and spent some time visiting family. ;)
-
That sounds like a pleasant way to spend the day Ruskie :)
I could be well out-of-date with my claim to have so many Scottish butchers ... About 30 or so years ago OH worked with several other Scottish immigrants (known as the Scottish mafia ;D ) and we all celebrated the Scottish festivals together and swapped info about our local Scottish butchers.
Our butcher is in an adjoining suburb and we have just always gone there and not looked for any others recently.

Hi,
what region are you in?
If in Sydney there is this butchers http://www.hillsbutchery.com.au/ , minimum order is $50 by the looks of it( They also have a nation wide delivery service )
NSW again http://davidslarder.com.au/
Brisbane there's a shop in Loganholme - sells Haggis's and Scottish pies) http://www.highlandflingproducts.com/locations.
Many of the "all in one" little British shops sell Scottish pies and black pudding too.
There's an Irish chip shop near me - he sells fresh black pudding , scot's pies and sausages in his fridge (only place I can get my cheese and onion pasties from - I'm a vegetarian ;D)
Over the years I have seen the local butchers at the Westfield malls around me start to sell Black pudding and stuff, one had a Haggis's for sale around the Christmas holidays last year
Kind Regards :)
-
Thanks Cell. I am in Brisbane, and yes I have heard of the Loganholme shop, but it's not a butcher as such I don't think. Oddly enough I was talking about this with my OH the other day and mentioned that we should go there.
I do wonder how popular it is with it not being an area I would expect there to be many Scottish (or English) people. Presumably they export to other areas. :) I must check it out. :)
There is a traditional British chippie and small 'grocery'/souvenir shop about 1/2 hour drive away. I believe they are opening an café soon. This is an area with a fair few expats. (had fish and chips a couple of days ago actually and jolly nice they were too). ;)

Hi,
I don't think you'll find a Scottish butcher here in SEQ. - The one (which is not a butcher) in Loganholm is set off the motorway - I've never been there, because he closes early, and the only time I'm travelling that way is going down to the GC to the theme parks. Hubby tried to get to it once, to buy me a birthday present..(can't remember what I was craving at the time - may have been walkers crisps) - but it closed early. (this is going back yeas ago).
The biggest shop for selling British foods is the in one Birkdale (but they are expensive) south side for me, and not worth the traffic
I'm closer to Redcliffe - there's a little shop in Redcliffe that sometimes I go to buy my "monster munch"
Kind regards
-
Yes Cell, the Birkdale one is the place! ;D Very small shop VERY expensive and some pretty awful souvenirs too - some of the same English food items can be bought at Coles and IGA for far less. I wouldn't be surprised if some of their food items come from the Scottish place at Loganholme.
The fish and chip shop (run by the same people) is very authentic and prices aren't bad either (google 'Chumley Warner').
They are opening an English café next door to the souvenir shop. Can't wait!
Also in the same shopping centre is an English style curry house (the guys who run it come from Birmingham). I've eaten there a couple of times years ago - it's good (pretty expensive) but not as good as your typical high street curry house in the UK. I'm very disappointed in the Australian curry houses - and there are a lot of immigrants from the Indian subcontinent in Australia so you would expect good things. I think English Indian is something different (and a whole lot better!)
;D
