Title: John Robert Lewis Smith - Canadian
Post by: gailkent on Sunday 24 January 16 19:05 GMT (UK)
I am looking for information on John Robert Lewis Smith, born sometime between 1900 - 1920, in Canada, I think Vancouver BC, his Mother's name was Thurza,Thirza, not sure if it is the first or last name, he married in England to Cathleene Everett.  He was a member of the Canadian Seaforth Highlanders, and was a corporal.  He died in Canada as well.

Hi gailkent,

From the FreeBMD website, here is the marriage details:

Smith, John R L to Everett, Cathleen D; September Qtr 1941; Surrey S E (South Eastern) Registration District; Volume 2a Page 1869.

Ordering the marriage cert would give John's father's name as well as other details including occupations for both John & his father.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Thank you so much David, I will pass this onto my friend in Portugal, and she can order the marriage certificate.  Do you know if there is a site on here for the Canadian deaths.  As I think he died in Canada.

Thanks again.  Gail

Hi Gail,

I'm not particularly familiar with Canadian genealogy, but I don't think that there is a countrywide death index as here in the UK. I believe that you would need to know in which state he died. Also from memory, I believe that there is a ruling if that's the right word, whereby deaths would only be searchable up to 50 or 75 years ago or something like that.

Perhaps searching the Canadian 1921 census might help? He might be with his parents if born somewhere between 1900 & 1920. His mother's name of Thurza/Thirza would be more likely to be her first name I would think.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Thanks David, yes the database in Canada is very limited, with different years that a person can look up information on BMD.  I am looking at the 1921 census as we speak, so will see what I come up with.  Thanks again.

.....  I am looking at the 1921 census as we speak, so will see what I come up with......

There are a few possibilities in 1911 and 1921 but with a surname like Smith, I think you'd best start with the marriage certificate so you are sure which names to search for.

Hi gailkent,

Unfortunately, Canada has very strict privacy laws as DavidJP has mentioned. The province
of British Columbia has archives, births to 1903, marriages to 1938 and deaths to 1993, and
as sami says, very difficult with the name John Smith.

Yes, DBREE we do have a strict database here in BC.  I did get some prospects off of the 1911 Census, that I can pass onto my cousin.  Thanks again.

;D ;D ;D Must be so used to seeing the Canadian flag I didn't notice it in your avatar.

You are aware of the BC Archives site then, and that you are also aware that there is no
"centralized" site for Canadian deaths.

Cheers,
DB
