I have been asked, by a friend who has a Great Grandfather who was born in Denmark, to see if I can locate his parents. He had moved to Australia by 1899 and was living in Waratah, Tasmania.
The information I have is
Hans Peter Marteen PHILIPP (variously spelled as Martine/Martin, and PHILLIPP/PHILLIPPE and other variations) and he was born in Denmark in 1857.
I have no idea where to start and I don't speak Danish.
Can anyone either point me in the right direction, or do a lookup for me please.
Many thanks in anticipation.
Cheers

I have tried to find him, but so far no luck. More information is needed like the names of parents and siblings and especially anything that looks like a place name.
FamilySearch has some good information on research in Denmark:

Thank you Brian............I don't think my friend has any other information about Hans and his siblings.
I will pass on the family search info to her and let her follow her nose.
Many thanks indeed.

Hi
There are trees on Ancestry stating that he was born 9 Oct 1856 in Flensburg which was Danish at that time.
Here he is in a database from the moving out book:
-
and here is his Census record from 1860 in Schleswig Strukstrup Fahrenstedt (Farensted) with family:

His parents:

Cheers Siouxsie
That is all there is to find I'm afraid. Birth records etc don't seem to be online.
Nice to know why he left Denmark.
Ian
-
Perhaps he left to avoid the army service.........but he ended up in a tiny town in Tasmania, called Waratah, and he was employed at the Tin Mine there, Mt Bischoff Tin Mine.
Again, many thanks.
-
Yes you are right. The image from reply 3 confirms this. You will have to scroll to the right to see the remarks from the record.

Thanks. Not sure that life in Waratah would have been much easier, especially as he married a woman who already had 4 or 5 small children!

But compared to life in Denmark/Germany at that time it might have been better. A lot of people moved away at that time.

Have been searching for descendants of Hans Peter Philipp as it was only yesterday that I posted a blog about him. His naturalisation papers in 1934 provides his full and correct name as well as the name of his father. Hope this helps.

Hi Tazdan
If Hans' father was called Nikolai then I wonder who I have found?
Hmm, interesting.
