Title: 832 Squadron Fleet Air Arm
Post by: petesdragon on Saturday 23 January 16 19:03 GMT (UK)
In my family research I was aware that my Uncle SubLt A K Hopkins died as a result of a flying accident - well that was the official line at the time. My father and aunts never spoke of the event other than to say he died near scapa flow...

My research found that he as an observer flew in Albercores (1941) and left HMS victorious in scapa flow on a navigation exercise. Through research at the national archives I found a diary of the Sqdrn, in it it describes the event as a plane Landed in the sea near Rona, search planes later found oil patches.

No more information is available, other than some days later the pilots body was found some miles away.

Any help or photos would be appreciated

I am researching a local war memorial and I have found the pilot of the plane you uncle was lost in, Sub Lt (A) Peter Duncan SAYER. His body was recovered and he is buried in Pakenham (Suffolk) Churchyard. When I have found more I will pass it on. Hopefully of course, I hope you are ahead of me in some aspects of the story
