Title: William Ward HANNANT - Help
Post by: R93847 on Wednesday 20 January 16 01:18 GMT (UK)
Hi
I am researching the HANNANT family and I have now reached a point of confusion with William Ward HANNANT. There is so much information that my "little grey cells" are not lining up any more as Poirot would say. Does anyone have any definitive information on William, his family and forebears that you could share with me. I am happy to share all the information I have to date (back to 1526) but that could change dramatically with what I learn about William and especially his parents.
regards
Daryl

Some extra information would help! ;D

Like dates?
And what your stumbling block actually is?

There are lots of RootsChatters willing to help - they don't need to have a link to that family.
So, please give us the information to work on ;D

As for stumbling blocks.

A good example is shown in one of the responses to my request. I have William born in 1776 yet MrsWheelie_1979 (Janice?) has him born in 1768 but we both have him dying in the same year 1843 and with the same number of children.

What is your source for this exact date?

Have you asked her where she has seen this year of birth?  Online family trees?  Is there an exact date and source?  If not then ignore it.

Hi Claire

Daryl

Do you have a record of burial for this child?

William is aged 65 on the 1841 census and looking at other entries, the ennumerator appears to have followed the instructions for rounding down adult ages.  William could have been aged anywhere between 65 to 69.

Hello Dundee
The first place I got the basic information was from the 1841 England Census. See attached.
As for the definite birth date. A few years ago, I sent all my documentation off to a relative who was going to take this further for me. Unfortunately that did not happen and I have now lost that and so I am starting it up again. All I had left was a large spreadsheet with the details from the documents/searches I had done. I cannot remember where I got everything I have. (signs of old age I think. If you are interested I can send that privately as this site does not accept .xls files. I have no positive information for the entries from William Ward back.

Marriage;
25  March 1794, St Andrew, Buxton
William HENNANT, Single Man
Sarah SMITH, Single Woman
Both of the Parish at time of Marriage
Witnesses, Edmund Clipperton and A Rivett.

You have Children as;;
Children: Robert Smith, Martha, Richard, Eliza Anne, William Clark, Susan, Sophia and Matilda

Baptisms of Children;
St Andrew, Buxton
Most under Hannant
WILLIAM SMITH, 7 Sept 1794
MARTHA, 30 Oct 1796 (under Hannent)
All Baptised on same day 18 June 1809;
RICHARD, Birth 6 Nov 1799
WM CLARKE, Birth 25 Aug 1808
ELIZA ANN, no Birth date given
Strangely Eliza Ann is down twice, Bapt 19 June 1809, Birth 19 March 1809

Then we have;
MATILDA, 9 Nov 1817, Fathers Occp Shopkeeper

Cant find Susan/Sophias Baptisms

Other than the possible Death Reg 1843 for a William Ward Hannant I cant see any other use of the middle name Ward in records for William Hannant that married Sarah Smith

All above on FreeREG

FreeREG also has a WILLIAM Baptised 18 April 1776, St Michael. Oxnead to RICHARD/SARY

EDIT;
Familysearch hasnt been working for me and I now see that William Ward Hannant is used on their records;
ELIZA ANN, Birth 19 March 1802 to William Ward Hannant and Sarah
SOPHIA, 24 May 1814

Hello Trish
Thankyou very much for the data. I have attached a .pdf file that shows exactly what I have from William Ward back to a 1526 entry. I have now remembered that I obtained nearly all of my information whilst searching on "Mundia" which is now no longer available by itself. I think it has somehow been incorporated into Ancestory.com
I must admit, I have found so many conflicting entries that I don't know which one is true. I think I need a 6 month holiday in Norfolk. I did like your entry where it had "HENNANT" instead of "HANNANT". As you will see in my attachment, I found one entry that had 3 children of the one family with the surname HENNANT and one HANNANT and their parents were HENNANT.
Oh well. Hopefully I get it all sorted this year.

Your welcome Daryl.

I would be a bit careful when following info found on the net.
Getting back to 1526 is very doubtful to me without a lot of resaerch and Parish Records for B/M/D and Wills etc.
Following an ordinary Family eg Ag Labs etc it is unusual to be able to get that far back.

On my Lines I have mostly only gone back to mid 1700's as I am at least sure that all the info is correct back to then.

Have a look around on FreeREG.

I would like a Holiday in Norfolk also :)

Yes, you can't trust anything on the internet.

I have just had a good play around in FreeREG (thank you for telling me about that) and I have found nearly every entry I already have in there. The problem is I have found the following multiple versions of the spelling of HANNANT for the same date/location. eg. Jeremy HENNANT/Jeremiah HENANT, Jeremy/Jeremie HENNANT/HENNANTE and Edmond HENNANT/HENNANTE. Linking the right ones is the most difficult. I must admit so far I have done all of my research on the cheap. ie. Not paid for membership to any site. Maybe that is my problem. But I will just keep flogging away and appreciate greatly input I receive from others such as yourself.

FamilySearch.org is also free - and very useful!

N.B. Don't register, or set up an account! ;D
Just click on "Search" and "Records"!

Thankyou. Yes, FamilySearch is a good one. We have one of their Family History Centers close by.

Believe it or not, but I am also doing both sides of my wife's family, CLARKE (paternal) and THOMAS (maternal). And I thought I was going to have a peaceful time in retirement.

Here is the scan of the Buxton baptismal records for William Ward's children (attached), written in his own hand. As you can see there are slight variations from what I've seen in earlier posts as it pertains to children's names.

I have that William Ward's parents were George Hannant/Hennant and Elizabeth Ward of Bacton, Norfolk. They were married in Jan 1770:
Name:    George Henant
Gender:    Male
Marriage Date:    29 Jan 1770
Marriage Place:    Paston,Norfolk,England
Spouse:    Elizabeth Ward
FHL Film Number:    894713

And William Ward was born/baptized in 1770:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NB9B-1XW

This would fit with the naming practice of the middle name of the first born son being the same as the mother's maiden name (ie, Robert Smith Hannant).

Hope that helps.

Thank you very much. For some reason I had difficulty in opening the file to a readable size. It just gets fuzzy when I try to enlarge it. I will keep trying.
