Title: Llanwonno St. Gwynno's
Post by: moggymorgan on Tuesday 19 January 16 15:59 GMT (UK)
Hi All,
Could someone help with looking at a gravestone in Llanwonno St Gwynno churchyard please.
I know my g-g-g-grandfather is buried there with some of his grandchildren and his daughter in law, but I would like to know if his date of birth is on the grave and if his wife is in the same grave and if so what was her name.

His name is Evan Morgan and he died Dec 1841.  Also in the grave is Jane Morgan his daughter in law who died Feb 1862.

Any information from this headstone would be gratefully received
Many thanks

Hi,

Yes, Glamfhs was where I got the information from - I was hoping there was a more definite birth date and some information on his wife either on the headstone or in the church records.

I have hit a blank wall with Evan before 1841.  I am unable to find his wife's name, marriage date or his birth date and I was hoping there was something that could be of interest on the headstone.

Thanks for taking the time to look up the Glamfhs files though

I have a photo of a grave of an Evan Morgan of Talywinder buried with others, including a Jane in Llanwonno church. I'll upload it shortly.

That's amazing! Are there many headstones of that age at St Gwynno's?

Does not appear to mention his wife. She must have already died. The Welsh "ei" indicates the relatives are his rather than belonging to say him and a wife (which would be indicated by the word "eu" = their).

Hi Deirdre
Yes there are lots of gravestones of that age and older, such as Guto Nyth Bran's grave (Griffith Morgan), but many graves have no headstone at all.

Thanks Sam, and an amazing headstone too. Not at St Gwynno's but I've struggled to find many ancestors with headstones in the 1900s yet alone earlier, yet they give so much valuable info.

I was born and brought up in Blaenllechau, on the other side of the mountain from Llanwonno, where both my paternal grandparents are buried. The last time I was there - around mid 1990's, the only gravestones were all around the church that could possibly be identified. The rest of the graveyard was totally overgrown and I couldn't find my grandparents' graves at all.
Llanwonno is, as most people know, well off the beaten track to say the least and when my grandfather was buried during the harsh winter of 1952, there was so much snow that for the last mile and a half, his coffin was taken up to the graveside on a sledge.
The other very little known bit of information I have on Llanwonno is that the singing for the film "ZULU" was done there by the Ferndale Imperial Choir whose President was the late Sir Stanley Baker.

Nice to see a connection. I actually delivered papers along Long Row and all the other streets behind it probably around 1957-59, but the names of most people escape me now. Commercial Street was where my grandparents and our family lived-all rented houses then. Llanwonno was the  place we went to regularly during school holidays, lovely memories of the silence and beauty.
